OK, so here is a question that is just waiting for its time to
come...when the DR400 hits the market do we want to welcome discussions
here? What about changing the list orientation to include all DR's...I
imagine that 350 and 650 and 400 discussions could occur threaded
alongside one another. Meanwhile, we can all contribute to non-model
specific questions....
Thoughts?

Tom,
I'm glad you brought up the 3 points in favor of the DR350. Your first point
is the absolute reason that I prefer the 350 over my XR650L. That little 350
is a jewel when it comes to smoothness. Just enough engine vibes to let you
know that you are riding an internal combustion powered vehicle. Perfect!
One of my biggest fears is that the new breed 400's will loose that
smoothness. That and too tall a seat height would be a real step backwards
in development.
Does anyone know what can be expected from an increase to Thumpers 435 kit?
I seem to recall that it is very reliable if all you do is resleeve to 435
and avoid any additional performance mods.
Thanks,
Doug

Doug, The 435 will give a noticable engine vibration about 5800 RPM. The cure is gear it up to use the additional tork and run it above or below that RPM. Other than that, the Thumper 435 kit is very reliable and the increased low and mid is worth the price of admission.

Why not? We already let those 435 and 441 guys in here.

I am looking to buy a DR350, but since I can only spend a maximum of $2000,
it will probably be an older model. Can anyone tell me where I can find
specifications such as weight, features, horsepower, etc. for them.
Thanks,

I have crashed a zillion times and never damaged the front turn signals. In
fact, I think the ones mounted in the hand guards may be more vulnerable.
The rear ones have been replaced a number of times, but aren't too
expensive.
Now, I do think the hand guards with turn signals built in are very cool
looking. TW

I did notice a very slight increase in vibration when I increased to 400cc
(10.5:1 compression piston), with the Cycle Gear kit. I wouldn't be
surprized if the 435 kit did the same. TW

HI Jeff, Advertized weight is 248lbs dry, I think one of the late dirt bike or dirt rider
magazines checked a bunch of bikes and I think I remember them saying it really weighed
273lbs. HP is around 27 for the stone stock one but that is easily fixed. 6 speeds and
properly spaced. I picked up a 96 for 2000 it was a little rough but for 300$ made it just
fine. thats the beauty of the DR they can be picked up for reasonable $
and be fixed fairly inexpensively. you get more bang for your buck. Hope this helps

HI guys, my 435 is as smooth can be and I have a megacycle cam the mild one also. Maybe I am
just use to it . Its sure fun to ride though, I am going on 5 years since I did the kit and It
still scares me some times. I did a punchoff with a 88 KTM twice in a row on a straight strech
in fourth gear and walked away from it both times. I think it was just that the KTM [2stroke}
just couldnt hook up like maybe to much power all at once.

Jack:
Unlike the other writers, I have broken every turn signal ,front and rear,
offered the dual sport world. EXCEPT - my Acerbis rally brush guards with
turn signals built in. Also, I now have flush mounts on the rear and have
never broken them. They look awesome on a DR. However, I have lost a lot
of bulbs. You will see what I mean when you install them. The other
writer is correct about stock bars. They have a solid core welded (?) into
the center, so forget about mounting the Acerbis on those. I installed
alumilite 7000's on mine and had no problem. Alumilite's are pretty
spendy, much less expensive bars will do the trick. The DR bars are junk
anyway. go after market and ask around about the bend ( I have CR - Hi on
all three of my bikes )
As far as function, they are better, much better than the stock roost
deflectors, but nowhere near the rally pro's which have the aluminum inner
guard. I have the Rally Pro's with mirrors, yes mirrors, mounted inside
them on my street legal '99 KTM 380 exc, and they are bullet proof (
except for maybe a magnum!).
p.s. don't over-torque the end pieces that insert into the bars. They
strip easy.

Jesse, In building hopped up street bike engines I've noticed the addition
of a hotter cam usually helps lessen vibrations. They tend to bring
compression back to a more tolerable level (I think)
I just don't want to lessen the reliability of my DR, but it sounds like you
are having good luck. Maybe just staying away from high rpm's on the 435
works.
Thanks,

Subject: (dr350) (no DR)Arkansas ride from Dallas Nov. 15-16
Hey Dave M. & anyone else interested....
On Nov 15-16 (a Mon/Tue), I'll be trailering my DR up to Mena, AR. I know
of a nice clean cheap $20 motel in town I'll be staying at. Plan to ride
the two areas mentioned at this URL:
http://www.ualr.edu/~mkhudson/dirtbike.htm
I'll be pulling out of Dallas very early Monday morn, will be unloaded in
Mena by noon, and go ride one of the two places. Next morning ride the
other, & be back in Dallas Tuesday eve.
I've got room in my 5X8 trailer for 2 more bikes in addition to mine. Its
about a 4.5 hr drive to Mena. If anyone wants to go, I'd consider changing
dates to any weekdays in mid-Nov.
It will be peak foliage time up there (some of the prettiest fall colors in
the US), & theres alot of tourist traffic on weekends....thats why I wanna
go during week. Should be cool but not cold.
Dave, you gonna show me what you can do on that new CR250?!?
