Brian and all,
I have a Supertrapp on my BMW R100GSPD that has a diverter,
but it still gets some flow around it. It has carboned up my
fender stay, but not too bad. That bike needed the 'Trap,
but I won't put one on my DR350SE due to the noise. A lot of
my use for the DR will be slower riding than with the BMW,
and that would make the noise more noticeable.
Can someone tell me where the Scott T-handle is available?
Sounds like a good thing to have.
Thanks,

Okay guys that's enough.Lab tests?spelling bees?Whats next thermal
exhaust retraction factors?(dont have any clue what that means).I just
figured the HOT exhuast gases are carried away from the motor via the
pipe regardless of anything.Reducing heat radiation from the pipe may
help it run a little cooler and then again may not.I also do not
remember Tony claiming his victorys due to this wrapping. If it did make
the motor run hotter I do not think it would be used by guys racing cars
down a drag strip.Heat =hp loss not many fans of this at a track. The
motors are liquid cooled in a car you say.All the more reason you would
want to keep the air that cools the dr around its head down as well. This
whole thing was just an idea i'm sure most are sitting at home reading
and laughing at all this anyway.Later on guys.

Subject: (dr350) Thumper...
I just placed an order with the Thumper in anticipation of installing Jesse's Vortex
airbox.
There standard recommendation for my setup with a stock exhaust is up 1 on the main
jet and up 1 on the pilot. On my SEV that means going from a 127.5 to 130 on the main
and 37.5 to 40 on the pilot. I told them that the list's experience has been that the
40 pilot is too rich. I don't have the impression that I changed their mind FWIW.
I ended up ordering the 130, 132.5, 135, and 137.5. I figured I'll be leaner than
Brian's 140 because he's running an exhaust and lives in TX and I live at 5,000 in
Salt Lake City with a stocker.
There will be a complete review in the next issue of Dual Sport News in the
November/December issue. Along with a review of the Big Gun exhaust (on a KLR). BTW,
the DR gets regular press in Dual Sport News in Eden Carl's technical corner. If you
have an interest here is subscription info.

Correct as far as the gasses go but the conductive heat of the pipe is
definitely felt by the head. Think of the pipe as an integral part of the
engines cooling system. It removes gases and also acts as a heat sink. In a
way it is like a spark plug. The heat range of a plug is determined by its
ability to disperse the heat it encounters in the combustion chamber. A plug
is engineered by the factory to a specific heat range.
Reducing heat radiation from the pipe may
help it run a little cooler and then again may not.
That's why I questioned the evidence to support wrapping in the first place.
I also do not
remember Tony claiming his victorys due to this wrapping.
Tony's exact words............"i have used the set-up for about 3 years on
my DR350se i have been in the top five places in all the enduros i have raced
the pasted two years on a trail bike"
If it did make
the motor run hotter I do not think it would be used by guys racing cars
down a drag strip.Heat =hp loss not many fans of this at a track.
Actually, horsepower increases with heat until thermal dynamically induced
friction losses set in and begin to rob horsepower and eventually lead to
piston seizure or a myriad of other engine problems.
The
motors are liquid cooled in a car you say.All the more reason you would
want to keep the air that cools the dr around its head down as well.
This brings me back to my original point...does it keep the exhaust port area
cooler and has that been proven?
This
whole thing was just an idea i'm sure most are sitting at home reading
and laughing at all this anyway.Later on guys.
If you will remember, my original response to your thought that maybe the
wrapping was a silly idea was a simple "yep" with a smiley face.
In my honest opinion, I don't think the wrapping will make a measurable
difference one way or the other on an unfaired engine such as the DR. However
I think pipe wrapping falls into the same category as the Vespa and the fat
girl. (chill out you politically correct types...I'm packing some extra
pounds myself...no maliciousness intended! : )
Have a good day,
Doug

OOOooohhhh NNNOOOOooo!!! Dave's gone to the dark side!!!!
I've ridden w/ Dave a few times around the Dallas area, & he's hell on
wheels! I'm sure he'll do good in competition.
For all you guys considering buying $200+ exhausts....consider doing what
Dave did described below. I cut up the stock can on a XR650L I had, and it
worked great!

T-handle is made by Scott, but available cheaper from Thumper Racing @
800-259-5186, part# TL-FASA, cost $16+$7 S&H for all orders under $50.
