Subject: Re: (dr350) header pipe
I have seen two-stroke expansion chambers wrapped with that stuff. Supposedly an
expansion chamber works better if you keep the heat even over most of the inside
surface. I don't think it would make much performance difference on a 4-stroke header
pipe. I might help keep some of the heat off your legs in hot desert heat. My right
ankle had welts all over when I went riding though 110 degree heat in Glamis (So.
California) this July. The DR gives off quite a bit of heat for a 350.
P.S. How many of you would like to see an after market "engine bay" faring for the
DR350?...I am just joking.

I've been happy w/ the MegaMax2....tunable (w/ disks), good quality, and
mounts up solid as a rock to the stock header pipe: I've taken a few falls
right on the exhaust & it didnt even get scratched. BajaDesigns
(www.bajadesigns.com) had the best price when I was shopping for it.

Hey Rob, I dont remember you saying anything about the pilot jet needle
valve....do you have the Scott T-handle adjuster? The on-the-fly adjustment
of that baby is very nice.....lets you tune it in. I have mine opened 2
turns out & have no flat spots anywhere in the revs.
Do you have a disc-type exhaust? You might try adjusting on that end as
well; on my FMFMM2, I'm running all the disks w/ tiny washers stacked
between disks on the last 3 to open it up a little more...loud, but not too
loud, and alot quieter than running it fully uncorked (which gives me a flat
spot anyway). If you have stock can, you might consider cutting the end off
and pulling out the baffle....fellow lister Dave in the Dallas area did this
recently....how did it end up working Dave?
Let us know how you do if you take the needle to the last notch....I noticed
an improvement going to the same notch you're at now, & might try the last
one to see if it gets even better.

I looked in my DR manual and could not find my engine bay DUH.I was
talking about race CARS.I just figured the theory on how it keeps
exhaust heat off the motor thus keeping on a CAR engine bay temps down
it may keep the engine cooler running on the DR's as well.It seems tony
is the only other person with this idea and he says it helps.Geez you
guys analize every statement. If less heat comes off the pipe one would
think it will have to effect the motor since they are so close
together.Of course the engine creates its own heat but none would
radiate from the pipe. There now I have held your hands through this like
kids misbehaving.Engine bay go figure?

Figure the minicule power saving from the cloth wrap would be negated by the

I really wish I would have read your e-mail, and then had the conversations
I have had on DR suspensions (including Norm Kouba, and baja designs).
Because you are exactly right; why waste money on something that has made
me go faster into my falls! The suspension is the big issue with the DR,
especially the front. I have a big gun exhaust, and an opened up air box,
and at my altitude (5000') it runs terrific, with no jetting mods. The
pipe does look cool and the sound really lets your buddies know you're
coming (if you know what I mean - now think hard about this one!)
Anyway, mine is for sale 1996 DR350SE great looking, great running, always
garaged, and proper maintenance. Today $2700 Tomorrow $??

Ya know, before ya plunk down a wad a cash for a "performance" exhaust,
take
a good look at your bike. Is it pretty much bone stock? If it is, then the
best exhaust system for the bike is the one the factory put on. Ya see the
trouble with "performance" exhausts on big 4-stroke bikes is that in order
for them to be truely effective at makin' great gobs of God's own Horse
Power
an' Torque, they gotta be INCREDIBLY LOUD. Your gonna drop at least $300
bucks for some Flash Gordon gizmo with absolutely no moving parts to gain a
massive 5 to 7 percent increase in Horse Power (if you believe what the ad
men are saying). Lets see, your basic, stock DR350 humps out about 30HP on
a
good day...maybe....and, according to my math, that wad o' cash will get
you
a whopping 2.1HP. Ah, but the weight you say....think of the great weight
savings by replacing the cast iron, lead weighted stock system......You'll
save maybe 10 or 15 lbs....think you'll REALLY notice it on a 275-300 pound
bike the next time you do a face plant? I.M. not so H.O., I'd spend that
300
bucks that's burnin' a hole in your pocket on suspension improvements;
Kouba
link, dialing in the front forks, setting the proper sag, etc. You wanna
make
some extra HP, carve the top off your airbox, stuff a good aftermarket
filter
in it and then dial in the jetting......these are REALLY cheap mods and
they'll make the bike run much better.
Unless you're gonna put a big bore kit and cam on the bike, an aftermarket
exhaust is a bigtime waste of money. All you'll get for your hard earned
cash
is a kewl looking exhaust pipe and a very loud bike. Like where you
ride?....Ride quietly so you can.....

How's it going Bryan?

I don't have this little gadget. I have not done anything to the pilot jet
needle valve. I'm not even sure I know where that is. Is that the air
screw adjustment thing on the bottom of the carb? If it is, I can try
adjusting it 'cause I had the boys at the local shop drill out that cover
Suzuki puts in there to prevent access.
I want to get a T-handle but I don't know the first thing about how this
adjustment affects the overall carb performance. Does the T-handle stay in
all the time or is it a tool you shove up in there when you want to adjust
it?

Now, you are exactly where I want to be. I want smooth engine operation

No, I'm stock with the exhaust. I have been considering aftermarket pipes
but I'm hesitant to go with a disc system because I've read that they can
damage the rear fender because of the circumferential exhaust outlet. Have
you exprienced any fender damage so far?
>If you have stock can, you might consider cutting the end off

Hmmm, I might have to give this a try if I can get the baffle out without
grinding welds. I haven't really looked at my exhaust setup yet.

After I rode it tonight, I don't think I'm going to drop the clip again (I
may however try it just for an experiment). The engine was too hot after my
ride to comfortably remove the spark plug without sizzling my fingers off,
so I'll wait and look at it tomorrow. I have a hunch that I maybe running a
bit too ruch on the needle. We'll see what the spark plug shows.
And so the chase goes on........
Thanks Bryan,
Rob.
