Hi Jesse,
I'm still waiting for the pumper to come in. They told me it
would be in last Tuesday, so I'm expecting it anytime. The
pumper is sent with a kit to fit the SE model. I ordered the
kit from Magic Racing. I think they're getting it from Stroker
Racing. I'll let everyone know the details when I get it.

Hi,
I'd like to give my bike a boost. I'm not sure I want to go to
Thumper's 435 yet since my bike only has 600 miles on it. I'm
thinking that I should go with White Brother's 377 or 385 with
10.5:1 piston and all-around cam. Then in 2 to 4 years move up
to the 435 if I want more power. I think I'd get more life out
of the engine that way. Comments...
The 377 is 82mm and the 385 is 83mm (stock is 79). I'm concerned
that the 385 might leave the jug too thin. Would the extra 1mm
of the 377 buy me any meaningful protection?
Megacycle doesn't offer a CAM for the '98 DR350SE. WB's lists
its all-around cam specs at .335 inch lift and 240 degree duration
for both intake and exhaust. Does anyone know what stock is?

Wow. All this SUPPOSED total amt. of fuel a tank holds and what's usable
is 2 different things. I know you can stop when you run out of reserve
and lay the bike on it side and sometimes more, to get the rest of the
fuel to spill over.. But, when's the last time you did this with 60
pounds of camping/traveling gear strapped on to the back of the bike.
With this out of my craw. ha ha ha.. Why do not the tank manufactures
make petcock setups for both sides. Remember on the old bike, this was
reserve.
Does anyone know/have expericence on setting up a modern day IMS or
Clarke or Acerbis tanks with a set up like this.. sure would help get
max fuel out of the tank.
Heck, even my BMW has a lot of wasted , unuseable fuel--

The Acerbis tanks that I've seen for DR's have petcocks on both sides.
My Clarke tank only has a petcock on 1 side.

I only ride in the dirt, on trails connected by fire roads. I'm
looking for more thrust at bottom for the trail riding.
I'm currently fitting a pumper carb, air box and Big Gun exhaust
but I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if that gives me as much as
I'm looking for.
I'm also running 14/41 rather than stock 15/41 sprockets which
made a nice difference. I may try 14/43.

Subject: (dr350) Colorado trip report
Hey guys!
I spent all last week in Colorado riding & fishing. We stayed about 40 mi.
S of Gunnisson where the La Garita Wilderness Area meets the Gunnisson N'tl
Forest on the Cochetopa River. About 8-10K feet elevation where we camped.
I trailered my bike up from Dallas, following a guy from work, + his dad &
kid.
TECHNICAL
I have a 95 SE w/ the following mods: JXneedle/spring, stock pilot valve,
but with Scott's T-handle adjuster screwed out 2.75 turns, 135 main jet
(stock was 127.5), an FMF MegaMax exhaust can w/ all the plates in place
(but not the quiet core), Clarke tank, Suzuki OEM Gel Seat, Suzuki OEM
luggage rack (the bigger of the 2 they offer), Pirelli MT-21 120/80 rear
tire w/ a stock-sized IRC front tire, 44tooth rear sprocket (stock front),
and the T-vent hose mod on the carb.
I took several main jets expecting to have to do alot of tinkering to get
the bike to run right at the high altitudes. I was pleasantly surprised to
find that the only thing I had to do was screw in the Scotts T-handle to
about 2 turns out, and crank up the idle just a hair. With this mod, the
bike ran strong and was responsive. Maybe it could've been better, cause it
popped even more than usual upon deceleration. At the highest altitudes, I
could tell the bike was weaker, but still had enough power for everything I
threw at it.
THE RIDE
I rode 4 days & fished 1 day. Most of my riding was on forest service
dirt/mud roads at high altitudes. I learned how to ride those dudes pretty
fast! It sure is fun to slide that rear tire coming out of turns.
I have to tell you guys about one day. I was on my way to the Rainbow Trail
trailhead just S of Salida, which was about 30 dirt + 60 hwy miles from
where I was camped. Just after Monarch pass on US 50 headed E, I saw a
trail marked as 225 on my topo map, and decided to take it since it went
almost all the way to Salida, bypassing alot of US 50. The trail starts out
as 2 track, pretty tame, w/ campers all along pulled offf the road by the
river that parralleled the road. About 10 miles along, it turned to single
track; at this point, I rode right by a big snow pack....you could only see
these on the highest mountains in sight; my point is....I WAS UP THERE!! I
had to be over 12K feet, cause I was higher than Monarch Pass, which was
11.?K, and I could see it below me in the distance.
I started getting in over my head with the first 100 meter 40+/- degree run
above the tree line. It was loose shale w/ deep sand. I was spinning my
tire all the way up and probably came close to redline, but I made it!
Then----I see I have to do the same thing 3 more times in a series of
switchbacks!! Now, I have a fairly short time of off-road riding, and had
been telling myself that I wouldn't get into anything too hairy. At the
time, these just seemed like a challenge, but taken together (with what was
to come), they represented too much for me to be trying. I was not
considering how much more difficult it would be to come DOWN these things if
I had to turn back further up the trail. Anyway, the trail kind of leveled
out to a more gentle climb and got rocky. To abreviate this tale....the
trail got progressively rockier, closer to the edge of a "your dead & will
never be found" drop-off. At one point, there was a fallen tree over the
trail (mid-thigh high), and I was stuck on a FREAKIN' NARROW GOAT TRAIL AT
OVER 13K FEET WHERE I'D BEEN RIDING WAY OVER MY HEAD!!!! There was no room
to turn the bike around; somehow, I picked it up, one end at a time, laying
it over a large boulder to get it turned around. I truely almost lost it
over the edge in this maneuver. After doing this, exhausted,
adreniline-jazzed, weak-knee'd, and scared to death, I took about an hour
long break to try to get a grip. I was really coming close to panick, with
uncontrolable thoughts running through my head about how easy it would be to
die coming down from up there.....seening my pregnant wife raising a kid
alone, etc... I was worried and scared just riding to the area where the
block-off was, but now that I had to go back down the same way....you can
imagine. I guess I had kept going up to that point thinking that anytime
the trail would smooth out and I'd see the end. Obviously, I made it back
down (praying all the way). So I guess the point of my story is to
reiterate the obvious:
1. Dont ride alone in the boonies
2. Dont keep riding on an unfamiliar trail that is progressively getting
beyond your abilities; turn back/find another way before you get in a bad
situation w/ no good choices.
Oh, all through this saga, I was adding to my panick by thinking that any
minute the bike would stall or wouldn't start after a drop or something. I
stalled the bike at least 10 times and dropped it 3 times, and every time
she started right up! In fact, it ran strong & perfect through the entire
ordeal! I am sure proud of that little 350 that got my ass into and back
out of trouble!
Also, I missed hitting several elk when going a little too fast on a mud
forest service road....after the first one went across the road in a flash,
I started to accelerate again, but then the rest of his buddies came
thundering across the road! Ever come within 5 feet of a huge bull elk
running down a mountain? Also saw a big black bear w/ a cub from a safe
distance.
FISHING
On an unrelated note, the day I fished was the best fishing (salt or
freshwater) I have ever seen. We hiked to a beaver pond and were catching
12+" brook, rainbow, cutthroat, & brown on light spinning tackle.
Seriously, I had a fish on about 1 of every 4 casts! The little yellow w/
red dots & gold blade Panther-Martin spinner we were using were tearing them
up! Plenty of excellent trout for dinner every night; just dont want to eat
them again for a while :)
WEATHER
At the higher altitudes we were at, it never got above 65 for a high, and
never froze at night (maybe low 40s). It rained every day but 1 for at
least a few hours, all day one day. I was glad I had my MSR gore-tex jacket
& pants, and was sorry I DIDNT invest in some waterproof boots/gloves. All
in all, less rain would've been nice, but I enjoyed riding in the mud at the
same time.
If anyone is heading to CO for a riding trip, I'd be happy to tell you any
details about where I stayed/rode.
