Subject: RE: (dr350) DR Parts
I'm not sure of the cost of either engine bore (from Thumper or the others)
but I would probably go with the least expensive of the options, because in
a few years you may want another bike, like I now do, here's why (don't
mean to bore you with my story):
I bought my '94 DR 350 SE new in May '94, basically new to riding other
than a Honda Trail 70 back in my early teens (1982-1985), so it was like
learning to ride again.
I do most of my riding on fire roads and trails too. I have now reached a
point in my riding ability that surpasses what I'd like the DR to do.
Power is plentiful for me with 15/47 gearing (I'm 150 lbs + about 15-20
pounds of fanny pack and back pack that I always wear and sometime another
5 lbs of video camera equipment-aka helmet cam), it's just the suspension
that makes it a handful on trails where one can carry speed (say 3rd gear).
This works real good for trail riding in 2nd gear (slower speeds),
although highway speeds of 60, the bike is running at 6500 RPM.
I'm using stock exhaust and stock jetting. I never really though much
about how the DR was holding back my ability to ride until I rode a
friend's KTM RX/C 400 and his ATK 605 (both dual sport bikes) earlier this
summer. I have even upgraded the front and rear suspension, but I can't
come close to riding the DR lilke I did the KTM and ATK.
I'm not saying the DR isn't a good bike, I love mine and have enjoyed every
minute I've spent behind the bars riding it 11k miles. It's just maybe not
up to what an high level intermediate or advanced rider can throw at it.
my 2 cents worth.

I only ride in the dirt, on trails connected by fire roads. I'm
looking for more thrust at bottom for the trail riding.
I'm currently fitting a pumper carb, air box and Big Gun exhaust
but I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if that gives me as much as
I'm looking for.
I'm also running 14/41 rather than stock 15/41 sprockets which
made a nice difference. I may try 14/43.

Subject: (dr350) trip to Europe
I am sending my bike via sea to Europe. Where do I buy the required
insurance? Also, what type of license will be needed. I am going for 3-4
weeks but am leaving the bike with family. Can I transfer the bike over to a
family member so that it can be registered there? I will be going again next
year and will try to sell the bike there.
Thanks in advance

Mark,
Since your bike is so new you could go with either a cam and stock bore
hi-comp piston or the 378. Both would give a nice boost. My bike is old
so I went straight to 385 but would not have if t was newer and ridden
on the street at all. I rode mine with stock & FS Mikuni aftr the mods,
slight increase with FS but stocker would work fine. I had mine done at
Cycle Specialty in Fayetteville.

The Acerbis DR350 tank is dual petcock. Gravity feed no less.

Hallo! Checked out a DR 350SE one hour ago. It is a 1998 model, which
was used in a shop as test bike for customers for 500 km. Then the
current owner bought it and sells it now. He says that there are 2500 km
on it now, but as the speedometer is defekt, you can't proove. The
bike looks ok, but not very clean. There is a little rust on the
handlebars. This surprises me a little bit. But the best thing is,
that the DR did not start. The owner excused many times and could
not understand. He says he has no service book, where the first
service is marked. In Austria the DR is sold for about 3800 US$. He
wanted 3100 US$. I told him that I would pay 2800 US$ and that he
has to do a check by the Austian Drivers Club. What do you think?

David, greetings from Grants Pass Oregon you might just check the plug,or possibly a
valve adjustment. I bought mine used, got it home, and kicked my brains out for about
20 minutes then checked the plug which was fouled, I installed a new one and it started
the first kick. A tight intake valve will cause hard starting also. These are simple
things, and the price sounds fair. Jesse

I agree about checking the plug. I let my '98 DR350SE sit for a
couple of weeks after a long dual sport ride. When I went to start it
a couple of weeks later, it wouldn't start. I changed the plug and
she fired right up.
Otherwise it sounds like a good price that you offered.
Good luck!

David, now that I have tried them the first thing I would suggest would be a set of
kouba links. Contact Norm Kouba at www.geocities.com/motorcity/2299 or
njkouba@ix.netcom.com or 208-939-3753. You will find no more sidekick or harsh rear
kick up just a nice plush ride. Jesse
