Hallo! I'm new to this list. I want to buy a DR 350 to go
down from Alaska to Chile. The reasons why I decided to take a
used DR are the following:
1.low fuel consumption - far distances, not to spend much money on fuel
2.low ccm - better handling offroad for non-professionals
3.cheap looking - better in central and south america
4.mechanics and spare parts available in central and south america
5.cheap - if it is stolen
6.air-cooled
7.said to be reliable
drawback: not very comfortable for long distances (seat, 350 ccm)
So I'm looking for a used one. Next week a will check one out. It's a
1998 with 2500 km. Do you have any advice what to check when buying a
used DR 350?
Any advice is welcome!
PS: There is a 4 gal. Acerbis tank. Are there also tanks available
which are a little bit bigger, let's say 5 gal.? How much weight
a DR can carry for long distances?

Subject: (dr350) oil things
Hi guys and gals
Been following the oil deal with a grin on how serious some people get
about it. Go for what you believe in and what works for you is my motto,
but let ole Jonesy boy do what he wants to do and don't worry about him.
On going to higher vis oils, We did have a problem , back once when I
was an oil field mechanic and having to deal with engines a bunch, on
engine failures from bearing overheating. What we found was that in most
of these cases, the rig personel had went to a higher vis oil by a
bunch. What went down was, even though they had good oil pressure, they
lost flow volume which keeps the bearings cooled off. Hence, the high
bearing temps and failure under heavy loads.
Just something else for you to ponder on when discussing oils and thier
merits.

Subject: (dr350) Carb mods
I'm fitting a 34mm pumper carb to my '98 DR350SE.
The instructions for the T-handle talk about removing
the cap and then filing away the plug. Once I do this,
will the T-handle have enough clearance from the starter?
Or is there something else I have to do?
Anyone know what the T-vent does? Is this worthwhile?
Regards...Mark

Mark:
Not only will you have enough room to clear the starter motor, but you =
will also allow the needle to actually seat. Until you file the carb =
down, the needle won't even come close to seating.=20
Keep us posted on how the pumper carb project goes. I'd be interested to =
know how much trouble it is to mount, what you have to do regarding =
cables, and whether the performance gain was worth the trouble and =
expense.
T-vent supposedly prevents bogging after jumps and whoops. Most have =
said it's worth it; some have reported not noticing much difference. It =
isn't a whole lot of work either way.=20
