Subject: Re: (dr350) DR Engine upgrades no longer available from Cycle Gear
Their support for the DR has waned over the years as they pursued other means of
business (general supply) rather than competing with Thumper, XR's Only, Stroker
and the like; too bad because at one time they had it all: one stop DR shopping.
They had good ideas but marketing was lacking, and they had difficulties
handling potential improvements & comments from customers.
The Magic air box has been picked up by Jesse (jesse@is-plus.net) who is on this
list; he has done improvements to the original design, and the price is still
reasonable for the benefits it offers, not costing any more than CG's price.
If I were to have engine work done again, I'd suggest going through Jesse or
Norm (njkouba@ix.netcom.com).

Subject: (dr350) DR Engine upgrades no longer available from Cycle Gear
I did comfirm that Cycle Gear no longer offers DR350 engine upgrades. In
fact, it seems they have little to do with engine performance products, save
the type you bolt on yourself.
Too bad. I am sure happy with the upgraded engine they built for me 3 years
ago (400 cc, 10.5 compression, 3/4 race
cam, heads ported, carb bored, and a Majic Air Box was included). It is one
screaming machine. I have 10000 miles on it, and it is still going strong.
No problem keeping up with my friend on his XR650L.
Thumper Racing in Texas still does some work. There are probably other
shops out there too that will build an engine for someone that doesn't want
to do it themselves.
The "Majic" air box is no longer made by the original company. Another
company is making it, for about $350 (ouch) - again available through
Thumper. Used to cost only $220 - those were the days.
Thumper Racing: 800-259-5186 - call for a free catalogue (No known web
page).

Subject: (dr350) Self Sealing Tubes?
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I sure couldn't find
it.
I'm replacing my rear tire with a MT21 and would like to know what tube
I should go with. Do those self sealing tubes work or would I be asking
for trouble out there on the trail? Any suggestions from the DR350
Gods?
Thanks,
Jim

A thread about this very issue starts up in rec.motorcycles.dirt very =
frequently. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of different opinions =
including:
1. Take your old tube and slit it completely around. Stuff it into your =
tire. Then stuff a new, heavy duty tube inside that one. Twice the =
puncture resistance, theoretically. (Some have wondered how much extra =
heat this would generate.)
2. Install a heavy duty tube and just patch it when it gets punctured. =
(Those who propose this are not fond of tire sealants.)
3. Install a heavy duty tube, AND sealant, like Slime. This is the route =
I have chosen. I ride almost exclusively in the desert where most =
everything has thorns attached. Big thorns sometimes. I have never =
suffered from a complete flat. (I do carry a CO2 inflator anyway!) =
Eventually, my front tire will develop a slow leak, at which point I =
remove the tire, remove the tube, and using a pair of pliers, pull the =
100 or so thorns out that are sticking through the inside of the tire. =
It seems that the longer, thicker thorns prevent Slime from doing its =
job. I don't even patch the tube; just reinstall it and air it up. The =
Slime takes care of the punctures.=20
That's my 2 cents worth.=20

Subject: (dr350) ? about trip to the Alps
I am thinking of taking a motorcycle trip to the Alps this fall. I am
looking at the big guys - Beach's, Edelweiss, Bosenberg, Lotus, etc. Has
anybody had any experiences with these companies? I was also looking to
flying my bike there and doing the trip by myself. I have also heard of a
bike exchange program, someone who has an extra bike that the rent for a few
days. Can anyone tell me the good and bad of these?
Thanks in advance.

Hello. Here you have some pictures of dual-sport bikes.
There is some very good bike, as RMX250S, or Djebel 250, or DT Lanza ...
but I continue believing that the suzuki DR350SE is one of the best :)

Subject: (dr350) More on Majic Air Box
Hi, Guys. The info on the Majic Air box I posted the other day was from the
guys at the other end of the phone at Cycle Gear and Thumper Racing. Both
these people told me they had had several calls from people inquiring about
availability - many having heard about them from the internet (!)
I now present to you from the horses mouth, up to date info on the current
version of the majic air box for the DR/DRS 350. I won't post the pictures
(will will forward to you, prn), but this version has a smaller opening
which should have less tendancy to collect dirt. Very nice looking unit.
This should be available soon, if not already, through Thumper Racing, or
the manufacturer direct. TW

Tom, greetings from Grants Pass OR and a former Montana resident just to
give you the straight scoop I am producing the former magic airbox and have
made some improvements on it:
1. the left mounting bracket now is held in place by the original left bolt
also holding the voltage regulator and its solid as a rock.
2. I changed the mudguard bracket so it uses the stock mudguard which makes
more room for the aftermarket exhaust systems.and its heaver duty than the
aceribus unit.
3. I narrowed the box from the right side and the top above the door is
wider to slow down the debris entry from that point.
4. I made the dzus fasteners captive in the door so they won't fall out.
5. At the outlet I formed a vortex shape and the outlet pipe welds in place
which enhances the flow even more than before.
I have an ad in cycle news issue no 26 and 27 I will see what kind of
response I get. My retail price is $ 279. Now you Know the rest of
the story.
I am sending you a picture of the Airbox and a cutaway section of the vortex
outlet as viewed from the inside.
sincerely Jesse Kientz
