From: Eric Myers <emyers@mc.net>
Subject: (dr350) Conversion in Illinois
Alright, just thought I'd introduce my self quickly and try not to lurk
to often. My name's Eric and I've just recently returned to the woods
with my family introducing them to the joys of motorcycling. Having
picked up an XR70 for my 8 year old son last Xmas and finally getting
him to solo on it a few weeks ago I thought it time I ponied up a couple
of bucks and bought myself a dirt ride.
I picked up a '99 DR350se on the 3rd with the idea of rocking up to
Black River Falls Wi family in tow and enjoy the trails I'd read about.
If any of you were witness to my flight over the bars, or my burial at
sea in the puddles on the trail, I'm glad I could provide the comic
relief.
At any rate, what a friggin riot!! that's all I have to say about the
dirt. I'm mainly a street bike rider and haven't really ventured into
the dirt for years and years and years. I forgot how much fun it can
really be. Endos on the Enduros notwithstanding.
The sand was a bit thick and I couldn't get enough speed going to plane
of the top of it without leaving my kid in the dust so I learned the
finer points of trying to stay in control at low speeds muscling the
bike back and forth through the sand.
A better tire might have helped however I've seen some guys do pretty
amazing things on bald tires in crappy conditions so I figure I need
more help than the bike does.
DR350 Turnons:
The feeling of forbidden pleasure as you exit the woods and rock
down the road on a bike caked with mud, trying to shake the feeling that
you're on a dirtbike and dirtbikes aren't allowed on the road.
DR350 Turnoffs
Weight, (gets heavy picking it up over and over) and lack of wheelie
power
Turnoffs can be removed with either money or attitude adjustments, and
I'm pretty happy with my choice. Anyone in the Northern Illinois
Southern Wisconsin area want to go for a spin?
Eric
PS
I'm also looking for some info on riding areas in Monroe, and Burlington
WI...trail construction? Sand, Dirt, Clay, etc. I'm looking for some
reasonably good dirt for the boy and myself to go riding in, the sand
wore me out.

Has anybody tried a K&N air filter in there DR350? I bought one last week
and I'm very impressed. You can feel a very noticeable difference in power.
My 99 DR350(dirt) will now pull the front wheel up much easier than it would
with the stock filter. Just thought I'd let you all know.

Subject: (dr350) DR Engine upgrades no longer available from Cycle Gear
I did comfirm that Cycle Gear no longer offers DR350 engine upgrades. In
fact, it seems they have little to do with engine performance products, save
the type you bolt on yourself.
Too bad. I am sure happy with the upgraded engine they built for me 3 years
ago (400 cc, 10.5 compression, 3/4 race
cam, heads ported, carb bored, and a Majic Air Box was included). It is one
screaming machine. I have 10000 miles on it, and it is still going strong.
No problem keeping up with my friend on his XR650L.
Thumper Racing in Texas still does some work. There are probably other
shops out there too that will build an engine for someone that doesn't want
to do it themselves.
The "Majic" air box is no longer made by the original company. Another
company is making it, for about $350 (ouch) - again available through
Thumper. Used to cost only $220 - those were the days.
Thumper Racing: 800-259-5186 - call for a free catalogue (No known web
page).

Subject: (dr350) Kouba Link evaluation
My friend Charlie finally gave me the low down on his new Kouba Link. He has
an
otherwise stock DR350.
We installed the links in under an hour. We used my motorcycle stand to lift
the rear tire off the ground. Having 1/2 inch drive sockets helped, as the
bolts were tight, otherwise installation was easy. We used the opportunity
to grease the bearings.
We forgot to measure seat height before and after. I think the link lowers
the seat slightly. At any rate, we adjusted preload according to
instructions.
Charlie finally got around to riding and then reporting to me. Most of the
riding he did was on forest service gravel and dirt roads, with a jeep trail
or two thrown in.
He said he was surprised that the minor difference in the length of the link
could make such a noticeable difference in handling. But notice it, he did.
He felt the rear tire was much better planted to the ground, with less
tendency to skitter around. He felt much more stable at speed, as a result.
On the rocky jeep trails, the rear end held traction much better, without
kicking out, or bouncing and loosing traction.
Overall, he is very happy with the result. Considering the low cost of this
accessory, Kouba links are quite a bargain.
As he gets more riding time in, I will add to this report. TW

My sometimes email correspondant, Reed Resnikoff has let me know he now r=

a motorcycle adventure tour company in Borneo. This is from the stuff he
sent me. Reed rides a DRS 350, by the way. TW
1st-ever MOTORCYCLE TRANS-BORNEO EXPEDITION
Commencing on Sept. 10, 1999, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, ASIAN MOTORCYCLE
ADVENTURES, SDN. BHD, a Malaysian-based motorcycle touring company, will
make the first-ever motorcycles trip around the world=92s third-largest i=
sland
of Borneo. If all goes as planned, they will return to Kota Kinabalu on
October 6, 27 grueling days later.
This won=92t be an easy trip. Straddling the equator, the weather is hot =
and
miserable, the majority of the road system is undeveloped or non-existent=
,
supplies will be scarce or unavailable, and basic information about the
actual areas on the route is sketchy at best.
But it will be a wonderful trip for the participants. There will be visit=
s
to deserted tropical beaches, rides through virgin rainforests, passages
across seldom-traversed mountain ranges, and frequent encounters with man=
y
of the over 200 separate indigenous groups living on Borneo since time
immemorial. There is also a very good chance that the expedition will
encounter some of the fascinating native wildlife such as: orangutans,
proboscis monkeys, leopards, elephants, hornbills, and hundreds of other
species too numerous to mention. . . . .

Subject: (dr350) The DR350SEX (1999 model)
I bought a DR350 "99" three months ago and absolutely love it. I broke
the bike in like the manual says, did the necessary check ups. After 1000
miles I take it out on the road, and I want to see what it does. If I hold
the throttle open for a period over a minute, the engine will act up and try
to shut down. I found out I have the "California" model. The Suzuki
dealer told me it must in the fuel delivery system. Well I fixed that. I
put an IMS 3.5 gas tank, a Kawasaki petcock, and new fuel line. No change.
I also installed the JX spring and needle, and cut the top of the air box
and dropped the front gear down to 14 teeth. Wow what a difference. I
also installed the links and preloaded the back shock, stiffened the dampers
to ten clicks and it's running great. I did find out if you leave the
petcock on, the fuel keeps flowing, and the gas vapor will vapor lock the
cylinder. Also the gas will collect in the air box, and the poor DR will
fuss for about an hour of riding.
After all that, I say OK lets go for the max run again. About 1 min. to
1.5 min. the engine shuts down again. It's either gas starvation or
ignition break down. I can run it at any RPM below 8000, but in high gear,
wide open the engine quits, then sputters. I let off the throttle, for
about a max of five seconds and then she will run fine again below 8000.
Is any one else having this problem? I like to do my own work. The last
check up, I gave the bike to the dealer, they kept my DR for three nail
biting, beautiful days just to do two hours of work. I'm open to any
ideas. An no I have no intention of sell my bike.
