You can get a stainless steel one from DualStar or Tim Bernard of Happy Trails Products
will make you one. I bought one of Tim's, it is 10.5 long instead of Suzuki's 71/2"...

Is making some luggage racks for somebody else's DR350 (I think - just check
with him). His work is sweet and at a reasonable cost.

Subject: (dr350) New York riding
I was just in Long Island for a wedding and got a look at how New Yorkers
ride motorcycles. Three lanes of traffic - bumper to bumper and the
motorcycles ride in between the cars, on the side of the road, dotted
yellow lines or wherever there's a bit of space. I saw a guy riding a
DR650 in a pack of 600cc and 900cc cafe racer bikes and had no trouble
keeping up with them. I know my little 350 would have been left way
behind. Lately, I am wondering if I am too big for my bike. People
have been asking me "is that a 125 or 185 cc bike?" I'm 6'5" and weigh
230 lbs. I am having fun but I wonder if I look funny. Oh well, I only
spent $1500 on it.

Subject: (dr350) Tire sizes
I have a '90 DR350S. I am looking to replace it's second pair of tires,
installed by the previous owner's mechanic. The rear is a 110/80-18
Pirelli MT70. I emailed Baja Designs inquiring about this size, since
it is not listed for the MT21, which I want to use, on their website.
They responded that the tire sizes on Japanese bike OEM tires were
different from European sizing (this sound fishy, since the sizes are
supposed to be in millimeters and inches - standardized units of
measurement.) He recommended 130/90-18.
Any comments on whether this size is appropriate, or the claim about
different meanings for a given size value?

Chris,
I had set out with a similar goal, but the problem you *will* encounter - I did
- - is once you get more oomph to do the 3rd gear wheelies, the same extra power
taxes the stock suspension proportionally, beyond its capabilities intended by
the maker.
Moral of the story: Suspension work is your best spent $s; do it first, then
engine mods. If you do bump up the engine performance in any way, shape, or
form, be prepared to experience strange handling quirks; they become accentuated
to the point you will think something really wrong is going on.

I've also heard the tire spec' system can vary for knobby
tires, but don't know the reason. Last week, I put a 120/90-
18 MT21 on the rear of my '96 SE. It's just a hair wider
than the original 110/90-18 Dunlop, but is noticably taller
(roughly 3/4" in diameter, not counting the knobs). I
would have preferred a 120/80-18, which should have kept
the gearing about the same, but the MT21 doesn't seem to
be available in that size. It looks like there'd be enough
clearance for the larger 130/90-18, but I'd be worried that
it's extra height would make the gearing too tall.
BTW, overall I like the MT21. It works really well in the
dirt, and better than I expected on the road.
Hope this helps,
Gaylord

Subject: Re: (dr350) Tire sizes
To All;
Bike tires, at least off-road knobbies, DOT legal and dual-sport tires, have
a quirky sizing system. There's an interesting explanation of the different
sizing parameters in the Dennis Kirk dirt bike & atv catalog. Essentially it
says this: Tires measured metricly are measured using different references
depending on whether the tire sidewall has a 100% aspect ratio or a 90 or 80%
aspect ratio. For tires that are 100% aspect ratio (such as the OEM
110/100x18 size for the rear tire on my '93 DR350), the width of the tire is
the width of the tire carcass, not the overall width as measured from the
outside edges of the outer edge knobs. In reality, my 110/100 tire has an
OVERALL tread width of 130mm. For tires that have 90 or 80% aspect ratios
(120/80x18 or 130/90x19), the actual width of the tire (in mm's) is given by
the first number. This measure is the overall tread width across the tire
from the outer edges of the outermost knobs (or tread edges for dual-purpose
tires).
I know this sounds like rocket science, but I checked it out when buying my
most recent set of knobbies; a metric tape measure showed it true. Hope this
helps in answering the "what will fit" and "are these the same size tires"
questions......
