Keith,
I have a 385 DRS, jetting should not be much different than decently
jetted opened up 350. Try a 40 - 42.5 pilot, 135 - 140 main.

Subject: (dr350) trailers and turn signals
Thanks for the input on hauling and trailers. I think a pickup truck or
van is the best way to haul the bike. My next vehicle will probably be
a pickup truck like a Dodge Dakota and this choice will be specifically
to support my bike riding interests. However, if small wheeled trailers
are OK for hauling, I will probably get the $220 one from Harbor Freight
and bolt a 6" rail to the thing. The one good thing about trailers is
they are easy to sell (my opinion). This will be a temporary setup until
I can have what I really want (above). Thanks for the help - I just
ordered my new ministalk turn signals from Dennis Kirk - only $13.99 plus
$5.00 shipping. I thought they'd be around $50 - what a relief.

Subject: (dr350) Kenda Trackmaster II Tires
Everybody:
I just had a slight accident this morning on my way into work. I was
coming down a twisty street in the rain and the front tire slid out on me
under very moderate breaking (I was only going 10-15mph to begin with).
Damage was minimal: a broken turn signal and mirror, bent handlebars, and
scratches on the fender and side plate. I escaped with only a small scrape
on my knee. It really wasn't much of an accident, more of a low speed
slide across the roadway. The point is that the Kenda tires, which suck
on dry pavement, or dangerous on wet pavement. Knobbies in general aren't
good on pavement, but these Kenda's are especially bad. After Mill Hall
this weekend the stock tires are going back on for the daily commute. It's
a great tire off-road, but pays for it on the street (even though it is DOT
legal). I think I will look for another tire that emphasizes the "dual" in
dual sport.

Hi Keith,
I agree, knobies are dangerous on the road, mainly because it was not designed
for that.
Knobies act like claws in the dirt, but knobies has las than half contact
surface with the road, compare to street tires.
The less contact surface, the less traction you have, now you add water and road
grime(oil, ext.), and than you have even less traction, because you got a thin
layer of water between the tire and the road.
Look at the tires on those Indy cars, Formula racers, wide smooth tires to
provide the maximum grabbing surface, than when it rains they switch them with
the ones that has grooves or channels to channel the water away and out, other
wise the tire will hydroplane on the top of the water, meaning no traction at
all.
I have made the same mistake by putting MX tire on the rear so at least i can get
go in the dirt , but i pay the price on the asphalt , can't accelerate hard or
use the rear brakes, other wise the road will lick those knobs right off. I did
keep the front tire stock so at least I have some braking power on the road. You
just can't win when it comes to road-dirt tires.

Jim,
I have a whole book full of riding areas in TN. and the bordering areas. I
received this after I joined VSTA(volunteer state trails association).
Membership is only $10.00 per year or $15 for your whole family. The trail
guide alone is worth the money. This is a great group of riders. They also
put on about 6 rides a year. I just got done doing a 130 mile ride at Royal
Blue (near Knoxville). Coming up in a few months we have a very cool ride at
Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch. This is the only non competition ride allowed at
her place. You can get all the info at
http://members.aol.com/volstateta/VSTA.html. Also my wife and I are always
going to Turkey Bay so if you want to hook up some time for a ride drop me a
line.

Subject: (dr350) Choices, Choices...DR's Galore!
I just got my latest issue of MCN, a British motorcycle weekly. Scheduled
for showing in the fall (most likely at the Milan Show) are a DR1000 monster
trailie based on the TL1000 V-twin and a water cooled DR400 to replace the
well respected but aging air cooled DR350. A bike under discussion is a
street trailie based on the 70hp SV650 engine. While the larger street
trailie bikes are popular in Europe, they may not be imported to England or
USA. The DR400 almost assuredly will be imported to America.
That's all I know,

Jim,
GWNF is in the northwestern part of Virginia. The two closest towns
would be Harrisonburg and Staunton. It is west of there, about 15
miles on the VA/WV border. If you are going out there, I would suggest
getting a Delorme map of the state of virginia. If I did not have one
of those, I would have been so lost. By the way, if you are looking
for some scenic riding, I would suggest staying in a section of the
forest called Todd Lake. It is centrally located and there are many
fire roads accessible from it. The ORV area in that forest is simply
that, there is not much easily accessible camping in that area unless
you have a jeep or a four wheeler. A 4x4 F250 extended cab long bed is
just a little too much to take down some of those trails. If you want
some more details email me, I might be able to give you some directions
and more specifics.

Mike & Patrick,
Thanks for the info, I'm not sure where else we will go this time,
someone else is running the show for a change. Mike, I ordered an
application from VSTA a few weeks ago, the guy said it was in the mail,
never got it. The trail info they have would have been nice, I don't
know what happened, maybe I'll try again so I can get it for next time.
