John,
K&N filters are very good filters, They should not suck sand unless
installed improperly. The only down side is they are aggravating to line
up the screw to hold them in plus they can get clogged if you drop the
bike in deep water. For general riding they are great.

For added information in this field. I have had run problems with
different bikes after laying it down, upside down, where ever.. Once in
awhile, for some reason, the float will hang and give you a flooded
condition. This is corrected ( most times ) by banging on the float
bowel with a wrench, screwdiver, etc. Not ever time , but many times
this will work and get things back settled in the carb. Just another
thing to check..

I have used a K&N filter for over a year. I ride in sandy and muddy
conditions and have never seen the least bit of sand in the carb. I love the
improved air flow I get with the K&N. The biggest downside to this filter is
that it is a bit of a pain to install. Hope this helps.

When I got my K&N, I struggled for about 30 min trying to get it to
fit (you dont have enough room to maneuver the screw through the
filter and into the mounting hole). Called Thumper Racing to ask if
there was a trick, and they advised taking off the airbox boot and
reaching in from the inside to help guide the bolt into place. It
worked. BUT....if I'd have known what a hassel it would be, I
would've bought a Uni....which are probably just as good, easier to
install & clean.

I just put new high CR-bend Alumilite handlebars on. I like em. The
local MX shop guy mentioned that most people cut them down. If
racing in woods, I guess I can see the obvious advantage. But here
in N. TX, thats not a likely scenario. Is there any
handling/steering advantages to having wider bars as opposed to
cutting them down? The only reason I can see for me personally to do
this is to get my bark-busters to mount on a straight part of the bar
nearer to the mounting clamps.

If you don't need to cut them down to fit thru the trees, then don't cut
them. There is more stability in the bike with wider handlebars, it give yo
more leverage

Bret,
White Brothers & Scott's (818-248-bike) have the piston kit; I suggest the
latter as they have jetting specs. By kit I mean it comes with a new wrist pin,
circlips, rings; I do not know if it comes with gaskets, though. Scott's has the
provisions to do the bore, but so would any shop you trust (shop & trust: do
those two words go together often?).
Two Zook shops near me both have the pistons in stock & boring capability
(boring/capability: there's another two words that may or may not go together
well).

People have been talking about a 385 kit. Sounds like a good choice for
me. I was wondering who makes it, the price, and a number or website
were I can get in contact with them. I also want to thank the people
who emailed me back before (especially John, he was a lot of help).

mike , shut the fuel pet cock off, then open the throttle wide open and pull
in the compression release and kick it through a half dozen times then try
to start it keep doing this until it starts. Don,t forget to turn the fuel
pet cock back on I know better but forgot this the other day and made it as
far as the middle of a steep hill this gets your attention!! Hope this
helps, Jesse @is-plus.net

Scot I have done this and have a template and some sheet aluminum that I made mine
from I would make you a couple for $ 30.00 or send you a copy of the template, it
takes two or three hours depending on what you have toolwise fitting the pieces to
the swing arm cutting and filing etc. let me know what you would like to do.

Bret, I just did a 385 for a guy with a 96 DR dirt model, it runs great
White Bros. has the kits for this. It uses the stock cylinder bored to 83mm.
Hope this helps. Jesse @is-plus.net

I have heard several different people talk about different kits. This is
very intesting to me since I plan on doing an oversizing kit this winter.
What I am wondering, does anybody out there have any dyno comparisions on the
various routes to go. I ride mostly tight woods so I am looking for very
strong gains to the bottom and mid range. Ofcourse a snapier throttle
response would also be appreciated. I would appreciate your input.

Take a look at the chart in http://www.off-road.com/~unthank/mods.html. It shows
the stock 350 v. 385 vs. 441. I have the write up if you want it.

Golly Mike; you're like the rest of us out here: really wanting it all :-) I
don't blame you.
It depends upon how much snap you want; it is somewhat proportional to the
displacement amongst other things. For woods riding I'd stay away from the
435/441 as they may have too much hit, and go with the modest boost from the
385. I have a 441 mated to a pumper carb, and it lurches forward in the tight
stuff, but it is oh-so-nice when things open up.

Mike; Thumper 435 is in my opinion the best out there from your description of
what you want. I recently described on the list that I have done four to date
with excellent results for more info contact me jesse@is-plus.net or 541-472-0835

Hi all,
I've been lurking since the first week or so........I've got a 97 DR350V
dirt model, it was new last spring and I have done no mod's to it except
acerbis hand guards, brake light and foldable mirrors ( have it licensed
....not completly street legal though). I'm in Vancouver BC.
I've heard rumors that the stock header pipe is stainless steel, painted
black. I checked with a magnet and mine is not magnetic. Anyone know if
this is true? If it is stainless, I'm going to strip and polish it.
