Jim,
I don't know the expression TDC - guess it means the highest point of
the piston.
At the left side of your engine cover there is a hex screw (approx #17).
If you open it and look into it then you can see a part of the
generator.
It has a mark on it, which will appear right in the middle of the whole
when you reach TDC. Make sure you find the right point (the mark appears
2 times) when all the valves are closed.

Kurt,
With some helpful advice from you, Mike, and Norm, I've got my front and rear
spring rates dialed in pretty well. I'm going to be laid up doing rehab for
a couple of months though so I'm going to keep working on it during the down
time. I've ordered the gold valve emulator for the front forks and was
curious about your reaction to the gold valve cartridge you put in your rear
shock. What did you notice different?
As just a side note on suspension, I'm going to help my son install a set of
Kouba num. 1 links on the rear of his DRZ400S and we'll keep the list
informed as to how they work out.
One other issue I might want to play with is further mods on my 650 exhaust.
I've been running a Supertrapp ids slip-on and am thinking of converting to a
complete system like Yoshimura's or Two Brother's and am wondering if anybody
has any input relative to power differences, weight, etc.

Jerry,
Although I have a Two Brothers system I currently recommend against it. The
power gain is easily noticable but the backfiring is damn annoying. I've had
my bike to two seperate mechanics (costing me a fair sum of money) and no
one can rectify it. The backfire occurs on decelleration when using the
engine to slow down. Calling Two Brothers for help is a waste of time.
Customer support is not their strong point. I know a guy here in Canada is
getting the Yoshimura system, but he's not on the list. I'll contact him to
see if he has it yet.
As for weight, the Two Brothers is light!!!
By the way does any one know the factory setting for the pilot air screw? As
well has anyone changed their main jet?
Regards,
Shayne.

Hi Shane. I had the exact same problem with my Laser Produro pipe. At
Jesse's suggestion I enlarged the pilot jet and this has cured the
decelleration backfire completely. A new jet costs =A33.40 over here, =
plus 15
mins to get the carb off, fit it and put it back together. Well worth =
a
try!

Subject: (dr) Great Mechanic Story
Hello All,
When I was on the KLR list I used to hear horror stories about dealership
mechanics. Never quite thought it was as bad as people would say. And then
it happened to me. I think maybe some of you can relate, both to my
frustration and depreciated bank account.
I took my bike in to my local dealership to have a 170 main jet
put in and fix the backfiring on the Two Brothers pipe. No problem they say.
Well, driving home
from the dealership the bike still backfires and no new jet was put in. They
claim the popping will never go away. They drilled a hole in my header pipe
and used a sensor for setting for the pipe.
I then decided to go to a different mechanic the next day. As I am riding
there my bike dies. A total of 8 km on my odometer from the last mechanic.
The bike will idle and start but die when you give it gas. Trailer my bike
to the new mechanic and he finds gobs af grime and dirt in the carb!!! He
cleans it up but still cannot fix the backfiring.
So two mechanics, two payments and no solution.
Regards,
Shayne.

The factory air screw setting varies with the model year and country. For
1996 in Canada, U.K., France, Brazil and Italy it is pre-set at 1.5 turns
out. For 1997 - 1999 in Canada and the U.S. it is set at the factory to some
lean emissions level and sealed. I found my 2000 DR650 to be set at 3/4 turn
out.
I have not changed the main jet.

I have a '94 dr350s. I am thinking that I need more rebound control
and of course the bike has no rebound adjustment, so can I just increase
the weight of the shock oil to increase the rebound value of the shock
and then soften up the compression adjustment to suit. Thanks
I like the new DR list and the Idea that we can some how get access
to picture easier.
Thanks Kurt.

Hi Jim. The method that I use is to first remove the sparkplug, the left
mag cover plug and the small upper left timing access plug and both rocker
covers. use a socket to rotate the flywheel counterclockwise with your
finger over the sparkplug hole, when you feel a pressure then observe
through the timing plug hole with a flashlight and watch for the "T" mark to
appear while rotating the flywheel when it is in the center of the hole this
should be TDC. to double check this try to wiggle the exhaust rocker arm and
the intake rockerarm they should both have play in them and this is the
point that you can adjust your valve clearance. Good luck with your
project.

Hi all, I am about to check my valves and the last time I did this I had
trouble finding TDC. What is the right way to find TDC and what would you
recommend for the settings? There is an acceptable range for the clearance,
is there a setting that works better? I just got a valve tool from Scotts
that fits the 3 mm adjuster that should make thing a lot easier. Thanks for
