Hi Mark, this has been my experience also the CV carbs are pretty altitude
friendly, If it was me I would take it like it is and if it got real sick I
would open the top of the airbox I believe it comes out easily then put it
back before you go back to lower altitudes.

Subject: (dr) Riding DRZ400S at altitude
I will be riding my new DRZ400S in about a month in Colorado, probably
always being above 6,000ft. with excursions to 13,500ft.
I know this is a new bike, but was hoping someone would have some
experience here. I have been riding at altitudes like this before on
different offroad machines---but they had your standard slide carbs and
definitely had to be rejetted.
The DRZ400S (street legal model only) has a vaccum slide carb and I was
hoping not to have to do anything to it---but I bet I will. So help me out
guys.
I've had many street bikes up at altitude, with them having vacuum slide
carbs (no jetting changes) and they did pretty well with mainly just a loss
of power---which is a given no matter what you do.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Mark,
A friend here in Colorado Springs (6200 ft above sealevel) recently bought a
DRZ400, dirt only version. He only rode it a few times and has subsequently
decided to sell it, but nothing to do with the bike (he is more interested in
street bikes than dirt). He and a few others seemed to really enjoy that
bike and I had not heard of any problems with it at this altitude and above.
I doubt that any jetting was changed from stock. My coworkers who rode it
found it very smooth with plenty of power, everything I felt about my old 94
DR350 tractor and more.
BTW, the DR350 has no problems with this altitude. I am assuming an earlier
owner rejetted the carb since the plug color has always been ideal. Last
week I brought it to Moab for a dual sport rally and altitudes ran from 4900
ft to 10600 ft above sealevel. I hardly noticed a difference as far as the
way my DR ran (should have brought more clothing on the second excursion
above 10000 ft though!). Temperatures also ranged from over 100 degrees in
town to chilly in the mountains. My DR only seemed to turn on more the
higher I rode and especially the cooler it got. Probably due to being
adjusted previously for the altitude, but I like to think of it as my own
personal mountain goat, ;)
Hope this is at least somewhat helpful and expect you will not have any
problems with a short trip. Good luck and have fun!

Subject: (dr) (DR 350) High Idle
A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Motion Pro throttle assembly from Jesse
and installed it on my bike. Last weekend I finally got to go riding and try
out the new setup. About 15 miles into the ride a problem developed that has
me puzzled. When I let off the throttle my engine started staying at a higher
idle and the only way I could get the idle to come down was to use the rear
brake to slow the engine down. The idle would then fall off to normal. My
first thought was that the new cable was hanging. I pulled over and checked
this out. with my front wheel turned in various positions I snapped the
throttle several times and it always planted it self right back on the idle
screw. At that point I noticed some gas dripping from the bottom drain tube
on the carburetor. I checked the drain screw and it was tight. I am at a
loss. Can anyone give me a clue? My DR is a 96 off road only with the pumper
style carb.
Thanks

Where can you buy tires, other that the MT21, on the internet. I am looking
to buy an inexpensive road tire for a trip to Bend, Oregon. Anyone know of
good tires that are up for a long road trip, but can still go into the
hills?
I had the stock DR tires on for a year, and didn't mind them, but
replacements are too expensive. I will not be using these tires much after
this trip.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Garth

Hi Mike , check the O'ring on the seat part of the needle and seat assembly
it gets dry and deformed and allows fuel to bypass the valving part causing
a high float bowl fuel level just enough to cause this at low speeds and
idle but not noticeable at crusing speed.

Subject: (dr) Hard start
Greetings:
I'm new to this, so bear with me please. Earlier today I purchased a nice
92 Suzuki DR650. It runs and rides great. Unfortunately, I've learned that
it can be a bit of a beast to get started. I'm finding the 650cc engine a
bit tough on my foot and leg. Does anyone know if I can get an electric
start installed on this bike? I may be wimping out, but I think that I'd get
a whole lot more enjoyment out of the bike if I didn't have to wear myself
out getting it started. Please let me know.
Thanks.

sell it and buy a '96 or later? wise ass remark, sorry...but it may be the
way to go...I'd love to have a kick start back-up but I sure wouldn't want
to depend on it. I work up enough sweat in the Darien in 90 degree plus heat
just standing still...I don't know the answer to your question and most of
the 650 owners on the list have the '96 or later...but we will watch and
wait with you...

Hey Jim!!
If you have the offroad model------just turn the petcock to the off
position and remove the fuel line from it. You will only get a small amount
of gas when you pull it loose.
If you have a Street legal S model---------pull off the fuel hose and
the vacuum tube. If gas still flows your petcock is bad. You will then need
to drain the tank and install a new petcock. When the engine is running
vacuum from the carburator and vacuum tube pulls the petcock open---so it
should be shut when the engine is not running.
Be sure and not have the petcock in the prime position----fuel will flow
then!!!!!! The prime position bypasses the vacuum system on the petcock.
Pulling the tank should be straight forward----If any more
problems--just holler!!!!

There is quite a bit of debate on this on the various lists...the
inexpensive tires of choice are the Kendas, Maxxis, and King. I've heard of
devotees of all of them. But before you buy them you owe it to yourself to
do a side by side comparison of them and say the MT21 and the Dunlop D606
the difference in sidewall rigidity is considerable...the low price
alternative is MAW with very mixed results on customer service. I think the
best approach is to find a local dealer who will throw in mounting and
balancing...Fred Hink does a great job on customer service at
www.arrowheadmotorsports.com .
