Bob,
This is from an article I wrote in 1995. It still hold pretty true.

SEATS
Pick up just about any DR test or hop-up article penned by the western
press and youÆll see an extra tall, extra long Baja Products/Ceet saddle
kit bolted on. TheyÆll tell you that it drastically improves the DRÆs
ergonomics and is far more comfortable than stock. Maybe in the deserts
of the west, but not on our tight, technical eastern trails. I tried
riding with one for over a year, but the extra height moves a large part
of the center of gravity (you) too high and your perched so high that you
can forget dabbing when the going gets tough. I can assure you that when
300 pounds of motorcycle leans over past itÆs balance point the rascal is
going down...hard!
The dimensions of the stock seat are the best for eastern off-roading.
As long as youÆre constantly moving around, as you do off-road, comfort
is not a problem. But hit a twenty mile road section and youÆll be
begging for mercy from the vinyl covered torture device. At the very
least, remove the foofy little buddy strap before it induces a terminal
case of monkey butt.
A couple of years ago, Mike Corbin and company introduced a funky looking
seat that they claimed offered all day comfort. They were wrong! In
just a few short miles, the average riderÆs thighs will begin to cramp
from fighting the exaggerated forward slant of the seatÆs front section.
To make matters worse, the thing is so wide that you have to adopt a
bowlegged stance when standing and loose all sense of control on the
trail.
Fear not, there may be hope! Tom Seymour and the folks at
Saddleman/Travelcade are introducing an off-road line of very trick seat
kit that have firm foam topped with a layer of space age medical-tech gel
like that found in wheel chair seats, Spenco bicycle seat covers and
gloves. The movement of the gel stimulates circulation at contact points
thereby eliminating so called hot spots

Suzuki logo gel seats made by Travelcade are available through the dealers
accessory catalog. For the DR350 there is a spandura cover model and an all
vinyl cover model. I bought one with the all vinyl cover and it is so
slippery I wish I had bought the spandura one. I think they are the same
price, about $175. Mine feels much better than the stock seat, no more numb
groin, and it should get better as it breaks in. I would imagine the
spandura is broken in when new.

I think most of us know exactly what you mean. I think the real fault =
is the shape of the seat. That sharp transition from horizontal to =
vertical, compounded by vibration, hurts!! I was amazed at the price of =
those kinda silly padded bicycling shorts (try $50-75), but right next =
to them at the bike shop were practically the same thing, but meant =
specifically to be worn as underwear, and they were $20-$25. Basically =
padded, boxer length underwear. I tried them out on a 100 mile 2 hour =
ride, and was happy with how much they helped. They eliminated about 75% =
of the pain. I don't go on a long ride without them now.

Hello to the dr list,
I recently purchased a used 1994 dr 650. It had 8.1k on the clock, appears
to be stock and in xlnt condition. I subscribed to the list about a week
ago (after buying the bike) and have found it to be very useful!
The bike is mostly a joy to ride. I bought it primarily for fun in the
dirt, but havn't had it in the dirt yet! . . . I'm having too much fun on
the country/mountain roads and state highways!! The only negatives after a
week (and 500 miles) of getting used to it are:
1.) The seat (Ouch!)
2.) Flairing similar to the KLR650 would be useful
3.) Somewhat heavy (not sure how it will handle in tight spots)
4.) 1st gear needs to be geared a little lower
5.) Difficult to find aftermarket stuff for the older dr 650's
I'm curious . . . are there any more 94 dr 650's out there or has anyone
owned one??
Thanks,
Vaughn Spears
