Colin, Try going to Norm's DR suspension site for the
link arms and down at the bottom there is a clickable
link to the Vortex airbox.

Subject: (dr) Safety Lockout Switches-Question
Please forgive me if this is common knowledge. I joined this list today to
get some insight from knowledgeable riders relative to my new Y2K DR650SE.
The sidestane switch and the clutch switch are a nuisance it seems. (If I'm
missing something here please let me know). My meter says that the clutch
switch is an open circuit wether the stand is up or down. ?? I found that
by placing a jumper this switch is defeated, but do not understand why I get
no meter indication (reading across the switch leads) by toggling the
switch.
The clutch switch I assume is the same but I don't want to take a chance on
damaging something by installing jumpers without first seeking
enlightenment.
I see the programs to calculate gearing changes, but a one-tooth drop on the
countershaft seems the easiest and cheapest thing to do. That make sense?
Comments, suggestions or direction to The Source of Knowledge would be
appreciated.

Ron,
My personal feeling on the safety switches is mixed. At first I wanted
to disconnect them, as you do. But after getting some time on the bike
I've decided that they aren't that much of a nuisance after all. And the
pain it could save if you forgot to put up the kickstand would be very
worthwhile. The clutch is a bit more of a problem, but only when
starting the bike while standing along side and warming it up. Not
enough of a problem for me to change that either. Ride the bike a little
while, see if you get used to them.
I have changed the front sprocket to lower the gearing on my DR350.
First I went to a 14 tooth, and then to a 13 tooth, which I like the
best for off road work. The objection to using a small front sprocket is
increased chain wear. Personally I'll just check my chain more
frequently, make sure it's okay. It is much cheaper to do it this way,
but even if it were not, I'd still do it this way. I've hit large rear
sprockets on rocks before, so that is one argument against them.

Ron, I just bought a Y2K DRZ400S and went thru exactly the same thing
you did. I took the switch off and soldered the wired together under the
seat. And everything works just fine!!!!!! I didn't seem to harm anything by
doing so.
But, I am like you------------my meter says the circuit is open no
matter what?????

Does anyone know the appropriate numbers to put in gear calc. I am
trying to get the numbers for the 1 - 6 transmission gear ratio, and
distance around the rear wheel. Well due to the brain fade any thing
else that I cant obtain just by looking at the bike. The bike is
completly stock gear wise except the 14 tooth countersprocket the I put
on.
Thanks

Well, I am off to the Tillamook burn for a little R&R on the DR!

Yes, the searchable archives are at the following url, they said changing
the "dr350" link at the end to "dr" was more difficult than it might seem:

6th 0.826
Primary Reduction is 2.818
These are the ratios for the DR350, DR350S and DR250 90-94. The DR250S
has lower ratios from 3rd up. 5th on the DR250S = 6th on all other DRs
from 1990-1994.
You can measure the OD of you tire and multiply by 3.14 to get the
circumference, or radius and multply by 2 x 3.14. Or, put a dap of
grease on a lug and roll the bike till it touches down twice and measure
between (not suggested for street bikes). You need to do this with
'your' tire, as tires all vary.

Wayne and Mark:
Thanks for your input. Glad someone else got the same readings on that
sidestand switch as I did. It must me Magic. :-)
I do intend to try the bike awhile before doing any by-passes. I figured it
would be easier to lube the chain If I could tilt the bike over on the
sidestand and let the engine spin the back tire while I sprayed. The clutch
lockout is another thing altogether, just personal preference I guess.
I had a choice between the new 400 and the DR yesterday. Same price so it
turned into a personal thing too. The 400 was the sexiest one for sure but
the seat height seemed about 2-inches above the DR. Heck, I can barely get
my leg over the DR!
I read the timely posts about the mixture screw too. Man, mine surges so
badly at 30-40 MPH in third and 4th gear that's almost unridable. Seems like
5th is an "above 60MPH" gear with this stock gearing.
Thanks again.

Brian,
You can get the 1-6 ratios from a shop manual, I don't remember for
sure, but they may also be in the owners manual. You must measure the
circumference of the rear wheel. Put a mark on the tire, and a
corresponding mark on the floor. Roll the bike until the mark on the
tire is again at the same low point, then put another mark on the floor.
Measure between the two marks, that's your rolling circumference.

On the DR250S, these circuits when closed, make connection to the
positive side of the starter relay coil (the electro magnet part of the
coil). It looks like maybe.. the only way I can think that it could
work.. that the extra two wires coming into the sidestand switch are
from the nuetral override. So, you'd have to close the clutch and
sidestand switches or permanently deal with the nuetral override switch.
My schematic doesn't take me through what happens in the ignitor with
regards to the nuetral switch.
