Not a problem, when you get the jx needle and spring you just first
remove the carb then remove the two screws from the top black cap very
gently remove it, it has a spring under it so hold it down until the screws
are out then let it up and off the carb. Now reach down into the hole in the
center of the slide with a pair of tweezers and pull up a small plastic step
washer then the stock needle now take the jx needle and put the clip on the
fourth groove down from the top make sure that the little plastic washer
that was below the clip on the stock needle is still in the hole drop the
needle in the hole then the step washer put the new spring on the black cap
and fit it back on the top in place of the stock one make sure the
diaphragm is still in place . now screw the top back in place. The main jet
can be replaced by removing the plug from the bottom of the bowl. Next while
the carb is upside down observe the brass plug just in front of the bowl
with a small hole in it this brass plug must be drilled out carefully
without breaking thru and damaging the fuel screw below it. This is so the
idle circuit mixture can be adjusted.
That is all it is to setting up the carb. the main jet sizes can be varied
according to further modifications made
Jesse this is Jason again should I replace the main with a No. 40 and if so
is it just
screw out the old screw in the new or is thier a adjustment to it ? should I
also buy the
T-handle air/fuel adjuster and the main jet wrench from Thumper racing ?

Ron (and listers),
I have a '98 DR650SE and I guess the safety switches don't really
bother me. I must be used to them. I use a Pit Bull rear stand when
lubing the chain. Of course if I'm on a trip I won't have the stand with
me, but I would probably have a friend or two around to tip the bike up
so I can lube... I too really like the DRZ400 but most (about 75%) of my
riding is on road and the 400's seat is really skinny. I rode about 120
miles yesterday and my butt was sore... and I have the Travelcade Gel
seat! with the stock seat it was much worse. I must have a tender butt I
guess. I'll just have to live with it unless I can figure out a way to
mount the drivers seat from my BMW 530i to the Suzook.
I too dropped one tooth on the front sprocket. It was geared way too
tall for off road use. I really couldn't use 5th gear except over 48 or
so mph. Now I can shift to 5th around 44 or so. It still will cruise
80mph no problem if you can stand the wind. But, that's what I have the
BMW motorcycle for. I have done a few other modifications to the DR too,
and as soon as I can get them to Shayne maybe he will post them on his
DR650 page...
Oh, Try your DR on your favorite twisty road with the sportbike
crowd...you will really suprise them. Just make sure there are no
straights in the road where they can out power you!!
Good luck with your new toy!

Thanks for your input. Glad someone else got the same readings on that
sidestand switch as I did. It must me Magic. :-)
I do intend to try the bike awhile before doing any by-passes. I
figured it
would be easier to lube the chain If I could tilt the bike over on the
sidestand and let the engine spin the back tire while I sprayed. The
clutch
lockout is another thing altogether, just personal preference I guess.
I had a choice between the new 400 and the DR yesterday. Same price so
it
turned into a personal thing too. The 400 was the sexiest one for sure
but
the seat height seemed about 2-inches above the DR. Heck, I can barely
get
my leg over the DR!
I read the timely posts about the mixture screw too. Man, mine surges
so
badly at 30-40 MPH in third and 4th gear that's almost unridable. Seems
like
5th is an "above 60MPH" gear with this stock gearing.
Thanks again.

Yes, that's right. There are MANY changes this year:
1. You must order a Honda Hoot Brochure by calling The Honda Hoot
Hotline, at 1-800-347-1289.
This Hotline should simply be used to request a Great Smokey Mountain
Honda Hoot Rally brochure.
2. Once you have the brochure, utilize the registration form to register
for the event. And no, you do not have to be a Full Rally Registrant
to enter this event. Just indicate by a notation, or separate note, you
are entering the dual sport event only. You pay only $30.00!
3. Participation is limited to the first 200 Riders who pre-enter.
4. Registration Ends June 1.
5. There will be no on-site registration.
6. Due to budget constraints placed on me by Honda, the lunch stop is
being moved to a much more economical, yet very nice, location.
4. Also due to budget constraints, there will only be four or five
people working as paid staff. Those are
Darrell Garrison, Phyllis Garrison, Ray Lewis, Bill Blythe and,
probably Don Sprinkle. Volunteer assistance will be greatly
appreciated, but not required.
5. The course will offer several new twists this year, including MORE
DIRT, and a more relaxed pace so that folks have time to see the sights
and take photos.
6. Wade Summers of Summers Racing Components (Scott's Dad) will have the
SRC truck on hand and present a bike set-up clininc following the ride.
7. The National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council's Bill Chapin,
Director of Michigan's Cycle Conservation Club and Promoter of the Six
Days of Michigan, will have the NOHVCC Peterbilt rig and other NOHVCC
officials on hand to introduce entrants to their programs.
8. In addition to racing legends Scott Summers and Gary Bailey, Jim
Pilon, "The Godfather of Dual Sporting", will be in attendance to ride
and share ideas with his fellow riders.
And, more!
Don't miss it!

Hi Jason, no adjustment necessary it just screws in place, you can try a 140
if you like but if it breaks up on open throttle you will have to go back to
the 137.5. You do not need a jet wrench these jets remove with a slot
screwdriver. The TEE handle is nice it is much easier to adjust the fuel
screw instead of a short screwdriver. I keep them in stock and they are
16.00

I'd like to buy an aftermarket exhaust for my 99 DR650SE. I want it as much
for performance as for weight reduction. What is everyone else using? I'd
like to stay away from re-jetting if at all possible. I get great mileage
and acceleration now as it is in stock form. Although I think it may run
lean from the factory.
Any and all opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jeff,
You seem to be contradicting yourself. First you say you "want it as
much for performance", then you say "I get great mileage and
acceleration now". This makes it difficult to understand why you want to
change the system. And on top of that, you don't want to bother changing
the jetting, which may be necessary to optimize performance with most
aftermarket exhausts. As far as saving weight goes, I doubt it would be
enough to compensate for the cost of this modification. I'm confused!
No offense meant, but looking at your webpage on your TL1000R, it seems
you just like to make changes to what is already a good machine, and not
really in need of them. Of course, if that's your hobby, go fer it!

I'll be getting a new exhaust here soon. I've narrowed it down to the
Supertrapp IDS2, Yoshimura, and Two Brothers Racing. I have not received all
the info back from each manufacture though. When I do I'll post it all on my
website.
