I have just fitted a bicycle speedo to my DRZ 400, I first tried the
cordless type (seemed the best idea) but it picked up magnetic impulses from
the motor which froze the display. I then tried the a "Sigma" brand with
cord but the cord was too short. I succeeded with a "Cateye" brand howeved
the magnetic pikup from cateye will not attach to your spokes, you will need
a magnet that you can Epoxy resin on. To space out the pickup, I cable tied
a black rubber door stop (the wedge shape) to the forks and fastened the
pick up to this. The set up work fine in all condition and stays in place no
problem,

Jesse,
thanks for your help. I decided to go for stock parts though. Not as much
fun as 440 but I think the price difference is too big. Instead I┤m saving
the money for a DR-Z in the future!!

By the way, has anyone mounted a bicycle computer on your DR? Does it work
ok?

I talked with Mike Walburn at DualStar yesterday. They're very close to
producing a beta batch of centerstands for the DR650...he had me take some

Just a note that new events and a ride schedule have been added to the Utah
Get-Together schedule.  Check out the activities at

Of special interest may be the White Rim campout ride that will take place
just before the Get-Together.  The campout is limited to a small number of
bikes, so get your info in as soon as possible to Bob Carreras; he has a
link on the events page.

Also, if you are familiar with some of these rides and would like to
volunteer as ride support or general support for the Get-Together, let me
know.  We need help with registration,  setup and cleanup and general
gophering..  Just e-mail me offlist at [e-mail].

Markus,
I'm using a Specialized "Sport" mountain bike computer.. has speed, odo,
total dist. and a clock.. and has a heavyduty sensor wire.. I had to go to a
cycle computer when going to RM forks.., losing the stock odo drive...

One drawback.. You have to mount a magnet on the front wheel.. a rock knocked
it offf at a dualsport ride leaving me lost on the  routechart!!

Another alternative is to mount the magnet in the front disk itself,
utilizing one of the holes with a like-sized magnet.  I found a rare
earth magnet that I super-glued into one of the inner holes.

The sensor then gets attached off the left fork, and is held on by tie
wraps and hot-melt glue.

To extend the wires on these things, a common method is to splice a
section (~3' or so) of 75 ohm coax cable into the wire.  One wire of the
pickup gets soldered to the core of the coax (make sure you use solid
wired coax), and the other wire gets soldered to the outer shield.  Make
sure they aren't touching each other, surround the joint with some heat
shrink tubing, and then squirt in some hot-melt glue.  The glue will
shrink the heat shrink tubing into a nice joint, ensures that the
soldered joints remain solid, and insulates between the two conductors.

Mount the sensor as indicated above, and tie-wrap the coax cable to the
brake line, all the way up to near the handlebars.  This ensures a
pretty durable installation and accounts for fork travel.

Finally, one of the plastic front disk guards (like from Maier) will
really help to keep an errant branch from ripping your wiring off.

Most of you will never read the article, but the South African Bike =
magazine (Bike SA, duh!) has an article that includes some views on the =
DRZ400 (and I'm sure the editor, Simon Fourie, or the writer of the =
article, Howard Stafford, won't mind me quoting verbatim).

The article was about an off-road ride between Johannesburg and Cape Town: =
over 1800km (that over 1000 miles) off total off-road riding.=20

Here we go:

"The BMW F650 makes about 160km/h, and so does the DRZ400, thanks to a =
larger front sprocket which Suzuki had fitted for us. Bloody amazing =
little bike the DRZ400. At one stage there were some wild yumps in the =
road which lifted our front wheels and Patrick simply held the DR on the =
throttle and maintained 300metre, 120km/h, totally controlled wheelies, =
one after the other."
