Subject: (dr) DRZ400E Vibration and Missing
My bike has a weird cyclical vibration when riding on the road. It will
vibrate for a second or two then stop for three or four seconds. The faster I
ride the shorter the time between the vibrations until about 55-60 mph, then
it continuously resonates (vibrates). I have replaced the tires with M21's.
Any idea what would cause this? I still have the off idle miss as well. I did
turn the pilot screw out 2 turns from fully in and it seemed to help, but if
I turn the throttle open just a bit it will still miss for a couple of
seconds.
Thanks
Mike

Subject: Re: (dr) GPS wiring on DR350
I just attatched my Garmin III+ to my KTM Adventure. Had to get a cross
bar, as the Magura bars don't have one (they are like ProTapers). The
TouraTech mount (with rubber vibration isolators) attatches to that. The
CycoActive Bar pack then attatches below the GPS, fitting just right. It
takes a while to line everything up, and avoid tangles, but I think I got it
right.
I hard wired the unit to my battery, as has been noted.
Tomorrow, I will see how, off pavement, on roads that are unfamiliar to me,
and not on the paper map (yes, I still need one of those) show up on the
GPS. I have constructed a route on the computer (using MapSource Roads and
Recreation, from Garmin), and I'll see how accurate the CDROM is.
By the way, this month's Motorcycle Consumer News has a comparison test of
several GPS units. The new Garmin Emap scored the highest (mainly due to
its larger memory capacity - 14 mb, versus 1.4 mb - allowing more room for
downloading supplemental map detail) with the III+ second. I got the latter
because it is waterproof, and the cool vibration proof mounts from TouraTech
are available for it.
New toy, or essential navigation device? We'll see, I guess.

Subject: RE: (dr) Shock Spring
Hey all,
I talked to Progressive yesterday. Very un-knowledgable
and not much help. They only make the 420 series shock for the '96-'00
DR650SE. In fact they all but called me a liar and said they never made
a 415 series (fully adjustable, remote res) shock for that model. I
have an article from the March '96 issue of Dirt Rider that they tested
one and it is fitted to a '96 model. The guy said he looked even in an
old book, and there was no listing for that. He even checked with
another person there!! They said that they made one for the '90 to '95
model. They couldn't have used one of these in the test because
according to them there is 2 inches difference in the shocks. Anyway,
the 420 shock that they have now, is only adjustable for preload and
rebound. Compression is automatic. There is no remote reserv. the gas
bladder is inside the shock. Sounds to me like they cut some corners to
cheapen the shock. The price is $415. The spring is progressive of
course and goes from 6.25 Kg to 6.9x Kg. No heavier spring is available.
Like I said they weren't much help. If the stock spring is 6.5 Kg, and
the Progressive starts at 6.25Kg, I never would get the sag right. I
have the stock shock preload almost all the way at the end of the
threads to get proper sag, and I am only about 195lbs!!
There is what I have found, anyone else??

you can become Sherlock Holmes for us. Race Tech doesn't have one
either. I
don't know about Eibach. Here are the dimensions of the stocker:
Rated at 6.5 kg
Outside diameter=86mm
Inside diameter=62.57 mm
Coil diameter=11.9 mm
Length = 255 mm.
Please let me know what you find out...Jesse can you help?

Tom (and list),
I also have the GPS III+, mounted on my DR650SE.
I am using the RAM mount I purchased through CycoActive. It is an
articulated thing that mounts to a hard rubber ball mounted to the bars.
It works very well. Please let us (or me off list) know how the CD map
stuff works. I have been debating whether or not to purchase that CD or
not. I did a little bit of light off road riding the other day, and it
did just fine. I purchased mine from A-Loop and had it "hardened" (shock
proofed) at the time of purchase. I have it plugged into DC while on the
bike too. It is very handy as a speedometer and clock as the factory DR
speedo is a bit off. Having a volt meter is cool too. If anyone would
like more info or pictures (I have a digital camera), please e-mail me
direct.

Our off road brethren are working hard. If ya wanna help 'em, show up!

I got the MapSource CD for Christmas. The mapping program itself it as
simple as a fantastically detailed map of the US. Way more detail than
National Geographic Trip Planner or Delorme Street Atlas or Rand McNally
Trip Maker. If there is a road, even one with a bar over it that looks
seldom used, it will often times be on the CD. Huge numbers of hunter
access roads, FS special roads and all those sorts of things are listed.
To date I have only loaded the three local counties, an extremely easy
process, into my GPS III+. I loaded those at "medium" detail level. I am
totally amazed by what I see going by on the screen as I travel about.
Local names for things that I never knew the exact location are on this
software!! 15 years of living here and a GPS is teaching me my local
geography!! Realtime!!! REAL LIFE!! When zoomed in with the unit, you
can pretty much trust every curve you see coming. I believe it when I
see a curve on it, but I don't rely on it to show me every curve. So
far, if its paved its on there, if its dirt and has a number its on
there, if its dirt and has been around awhile, it is likely on there. It
includes campgrounds, trails, all sorts of good data. This software
takes a great product and makes it unbelievable. I am totally reliant on
both for traveling. I do about 25k per year on my street machine.

Bob,
I put the Button bars on a few days ago and the installation went pretty
smooth. They feel good cruising on city streets around town but I
haven't had a chance to try them off-road yet (although I,ve got a trip
planned next Thursday with some friends). I'm a beginning rider and am
tall- these feel much better standing up.
Thanks for responding to my message!

I have the GPSIII+ with the Mapsource CD, personally I think that the
CD is well worth the 80 dollars for it, the GPS main memory just list
all of the major roads, none of the farm to market(FM) road numbers, if
you install the CD then you get a list all of the roads. The only
downside is using it in big towns like Dallas. Dallas and FT Worth are
divided into 4 sectionson the CD. If you put all four sections into the
GPS you have used all of the ram, and cannot put any more counties into
it. But if installing counties that dont have a lot of roads, it is
possible to install up to 13 counties into it. I uses the maps to get
more detail in the towns that I am not used to, and use Waypoint+ and
Delorme Street Atlas to download the waypoints and routes for trips.
Jan I would like to see how you have your GPS mounted and wired up.
Thanks
