Subject: (cww) Poll for new Mac Flight Sim
Date: 04 Aug 1998 15:00:03 -0400
Go to http://www.crosswindsims.com/ and check out the pics of a new WW-2
jet sim under devolopment. They are currently taking a poll as to
devoloping it for the Mac. Be nice to have a new jet sim, esepically if
TCP/IP is supported. Hopefully GSC will have the patch soon so we can fly
korea 3dfx with the new whizzard cards by micro.

Just received the new Hornet Korea for the Mac and am playing it using the
Arcadefx card and the Griffin adapter for the Mac. In the original Korea it
was possible to fly aircraft other than the Hornet by holding down the
option button and going to the tour of duty under the missions menu. Anyone
know if such a procedure is possible with the new 3D GSC Korea and, if so,
how does one select other aircraft that have been designated for a
particular mission? The Arcadefx is a super deal for a Voodoofx card at
$49.95. I have a G3 and am getting great frame rate. For Arcadefx to work
in a PowerMac, one must obtain a Mac adapter such as supplied by Griffin
for $15 plus shipping.

Hi all. I was speaking to Micro Conversions and have the following to report.
1. 12 meg card will be released with in two weeks for $349.00 US.
2. Drivers to daisy chain, or link the cards together interlacing it's
memory will be available within two weeks. If you interlace them, the cards
must have simular memory, ie 8meg connect to 8 meg, 12 meg to 12 meg.
3. I'm not really sure on this one so do not take this as fact. The cards
may be used on a PC if the cable is changed, and IF the V-2 PC drivers work
on it. If anyone got more info on this I'd like to know. Thanks in advance.
As you know, you can get the 8 meg card now, for $299.00 US. See you all
later. Zorro out.

One thing, this is a Voodoo patch only. It does not include TCP/IP or

I downloaded and installed the patch and even though it's a beta patch,
my Hornet: Korea flight sim seems to be working O.K. My question is: I
have the Arcadefx card installed in my Mac G3 with a Griffin adaptor.
Did I really need the new patch and is it intended only for the Game

I saw this on usenet today. Spread the word about this if you have any
ideas for A-10.
THIS IS FROM A MEMBER FROM PARSOFT
The best way they can show their support at this time is for each and every
one
of them to follow these instructions:
If you want more A-10, do this:
Write an email to iwantmorea10@parsoft.com and title it "I want more A-10!"
In the body of the message, tell us what you want more of (new missions for
Attack, Cuba or a whole new A-10 game) and I'll track the responses and be
your
champion when the time comes to decide what project to work on after SDOE
ships. Note that in order for this to work you've got to speak up. If you
know someone that wants more A-10 and doesn't get on usenet, get him/her to
send us an email.

Hi LeadDog this is Zorro. Could you forward this to Parasoft for me.
Hi, Dan from Canada. Flight sims for the Mac are slow in comming and I
myself await for the next flight sim. A-10 would be welcome by me and many
others. Wheather in the form of new missions for A-10, or a new A-10 with
3dfx, mission builder, TCP/IP, and the famous panaromic view. At the moment
there is a real need for new flight sims for the Mac. The new sims, good
ones that is...are far and few between, and A-10 has been one of the rare
good ones. The A-10 with 3dfx, 1024 x 768 res, low altitude mud slinging
missions would make my day...no it would make my year. The flight model in
A-10 is excellent, that along with TCP/IP, new missions, would be reason
enough for me to order a copy today. Tell me where and when to send my
money, and I'd add extra to have it sent via air delivery. I hope Parasoft
seriously considers realeasing some form of A-10 for the Mac. Thankyou for
listening.

Hi LeadDog. Is there anything I can do to help you? I myself would love to
see A-10 back. Espically with 3dfx, and TCP/IP. I'll forward a request to
the Cougars and get my squad mates to E mail parasoft. It would be gerat to
have a A-10 net flying, mission style pilot and wingman set up. I prefer
low level flying and A-10 would be right my alley. Would be nice to sling a
little mud now and again. I believe A-10 had a good following for the Mac.
Glad to see your intrest in getting A-10 back. I'm behind you all the way,
nothing like flying a new set of wings once in a while. See you soon on
#hornet...take care.

Sorry to post my letter to LeadDog on the CWW list. I accidently replied to
the list where as the reply was ment to go to LeadDog. Well,
anyways...aside from that mistake...we should try to premote more sims for
the Mac when the opportunity arises. MAybe the "new" A-10 would have TCP/IP
so we could fly 2 vs 2 missions, or a joint flight of 4 to complete an
objective. Four warthogs flying down a valley taking out aaa defenses, so
the last one can liquidate the objective. A-10 was a rocking sim and it
would be great to see it make a come back. See you guys on #hornet! Z out.

The last aircraft has just landed and taxied to the forward section
of the flight deck. The flight deck literally comes alive with hundreds
of men intent on completing an assigned task within a minimum amount of
time; namely, fueling crews, catapult crews, maintenance men, plane
captains, flight crews, trouble-shooters, and flight-deck control
personnel. The noise level is deafening as the engines of the tow
tractors groan under the load of an aircraft during respotting of the
deck. Maintenance men are performing a high-power turnup on two "birds"
just aft of the island, and the screams from the engines exceed all of
the other noises. Suddenly, a loud explosion shatters the air,and an
object...no! Two objects are airborne in the area above the A-7's.
What!
Is one of those objects a man, or is it just a bundle of cleaning rags?
Gravity pulls the objects back to the flight deck, and two distinct
sounds are heard: a metallic clang, clunk, clunk, and a sound much like
the sound of a water- melon being dropped on cement. Now,we can
identify
at least one of the objects. It is an ejection seat of an A-7. The
other
object appears to be a man--a badly misshapen man. Both of his arms and
one leg are broken. His nose is bloody, but he seems unconcerned about
his condition. He is DEAD! A premature death can be your fate if you do
not understand the operation of the equipment that you are maintaining
or are utilizing. </bigger>----- Excerpt from a U.S. Navy training

All of the Hornet competition ladders have had message boards added to
them. These msg boards are not meant to compete with the GSC message
board, but rather supplement it as each ladder focuses on a specific
Hornet version.
General discussion and questions are acceptable. But I think what will
develop is questions from and for the online user who is looking to
become a more efficent killer and all around card carrying aerial
assassin :) The rules will be courtesy and common sense. As long as
those are observed, anything can be expressed.
I want to thank Jon Blum for his generous assistance in contributing to
getting the boards online. It would be fair to say without his help
they wouldn't have happened
In addition to the Hornet ladders, each of the other CWW ladders also
has a message board.

I assume bringing extra fuel will be necessary? -- as the time to engage in
Free For All is quite long (its quite long in all the Korea net missions).
Also, to what score will the matches be played? 3? 5?
Things would go quicker (and be more exciting) if TTE (time to engage) were
less. What about having both players join red team in Vad of B27s -- take
off together, break and fly in opposite compass directions for a time,
turn, re-acquire, and sfp?. (That arena is neat too due to the city -- lots
of fun to mix it up among the buildings!)

Free for all begins at the same base. I would think that would reduce trip
time as well as increasing the anxiety (pucker) factor :) One person will
fly 000 and the other 180. As for the score, that is covered on the

Subject: (cww) $99 VD1 card
Date: 18 Aug 1998 17:13:10 -0700
From Mac Gamer's Ledge (http://www.macledge.com/NEWS.chtml):
Germany-based VillageTronic announces $99 3Dfx Voodoo1 card:
Called the MacMagic, this inexpensive 4MB 3Dfx voodoo1 card was
specifically designed for the Mac, says the VIllageTronic marketing
representative. Available in September, this price point will help match up
with the PC 3Dfx cards. While this card is not a voodoo2 3Dfx card (like
the Game Wizard from Micro Conversions) and can't be installed into the
iMac, this one-PCI card will provide an affordable solution to those who
have waited for prices to come down. More specifications will be upcoming.
From Village Tronic (http://www.villagetronic.com/macmagic.html):
PRESS RELEASE
VillageTronic is about to ship MacMagic, the first consumer 3D accelerator
for the Mac
Sarstedt, Germany--August 14, 1998--Village Tronic Marketing GmbH today
announced MacMagic. MacMagic is the first and only consumer 3D accelerator
for the Macintosh platform. Equipped with Voodoo Graphics from 3Dfx
interactive, Inc. and 4 MB Video RAM it offers the industry standard chip
set for 3D acceleration in games to every PowerMacintosh user with one free
PCI slot.
MacMagic is - in contrast to other 3Dfx cards - specifically designed for
the Macintosh. It offers unmatched compatibility with MacOS and delivers a
user experience that lives up to the expectations of the Macintosh customer.
MacMagic debuts in September and will retail for $99.
"It's about time that the industry standard for 3D acceleration in games is
hitting the Mac market at a consumer price point. We are excited to be the
first to make it affordable for _every_ avid gamer on the Mac to explore
his favourite 3D games in an incredible new way." says Marc Schmitt,
Product Marketing Manager of Village Tronic Marketing GmbH. "We see that
games on the WinTel platform are moving very fast to a scenario where 3D
hardware acceleration is mandatory rather than optional as it has been in
the past. With MacMagic we hope to raise the market share of Voodoo
equipped machines in the Macintosh
market significantly. The goal is to achieve two things:
* Keeping the Macintosh platform attractive for current Mac game developers and
* making it less of an effort for WinTel game developers to come up with
Macintosh titles. This is by offering the exact same hard- and software on
the Mac as they are used to on the PC."
Expect the impossible from the Masters of Voodoo ... to be continued ...
Details and specs will follow soon.
VillageTronic is a graphic card manufacturer based in Germany who
specializes on the Macintosh platform. The current product range offers
everything from the very low end 2D up to very special 2D and 3D solutions.

Subject: (cww) HKM Tournament
Date: 22 Aug 1998 21:58:57 -0700
There will be a tournament for Mac Hornet Korea to be held this coming
Saturday, Aug 29 at 4pm EDT. Hosting channel will be #hornet on Dalnet. If
there is enough interest from outside the US, the tournament will be held
in sections. One section would be North/South America and immediate areas
contestants and the other would be Europe/Asia
The tournament is to be named, "There can only be One" and complete details
can be found by going to the CWW Gunsmoke Tournament page and selecting the
link to the tournament page.
http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/GS.html
As always, the winner and runnerup will have their choices of the Aggressor
Squadron that they want to be a member of. And the only way to be a member
of an Aggressor Squadron is to be the winner or runnerup of a Gunsmoke
Series Tournament.
Registration runs thru Wednesday, Aug 26. After that, but before the
tournament, I will create and post the brackets matching up people. To see
what the brackets look like, check out any of the previous tournaments
listed on the Gunsmoke page
To register, send mail to cdb@inficad.com
Thanks,
Dale

I would have liked to compete in this tourney, but my machine is too slow
in HK to be competitive. I would like to help in the tourney in some
capacity as scorekeeper or other administrative duty.

Subject: (cww) Hornet Sq Names
Date: 26 Aug 1998 16:59:00 -0700
The following has been been posted by Jon Blum to the GSC links page where
the Hornet Sq's are listed:
>In order for GSC to provide the highest quality to those of you having or
>forming a squadron, it >is essential that each squadron have their own
>unique identity. Similar squadron names serve >no one's best interest and
>only confuse those that might want to join. The CWW will gladly >offer
>assistance to those wishing to form a squadron.
Jon is doing this because of a complaint where someone else came along and
used virtually the same squadron name without bothering to ask or check
about it's use. As Jon notes, it is in no one's best interest to have
identical or near identical squadron names because of the confusion it can
cause.
In order to help this process, I will be resurrecting the CWW page that
lists all the known squadrons so that there can be no confusion about what
is taken and who is using it for what. In addition to this, the CWW
Competition Ladders will list squadron designations on a first come, first
server basis. A 2nd identical or near identical squadron designation will
not be provided to select from.
One of the member organizations of the CWW, the 1st Cyber Marine Air Wing,
has a policy that no squadron can join (or remain) CMAW without 6 active
members without special dispensation for low interest areas such as Asia.
This is done because otherwise there would be a ton of 1 and 2 person
squadrons that could not last.
The squadrons are done for relaxation. But that doesn't mean what is done
is responsibility free. Squadron names will be on first come, first serve
basis. You can be as creative as you want. Other then that, the only limits
are common sense and courtesy

Subject: (cww) HKM Tourney Cancelled
Date: 29 Aug 1998 14:16:16 -0700
In a first, the HKM tourney scheduled for Sat, Aug 29 was cancelled at 15
minutes after the hour due to insufficent turnout of those that registered
for the tournament. This seemed to have been a star crossed tournament from
it's inception as only 6 people registered for the tournament, the ARNS
decided it wasn't sure if it would be available and my own schedule was not
certain for the tournament till Thursday.
You can view the page at
http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/GS.html to see the brackets
with the CANCELLED on it. I will not do things by halves.
To those of you that did show, thank you for your effort. You will each be
recieving a consolation prize of an official issue CWW hat that a few
people already have. These hats are not available anywhere and are not for
sale.
To those of you that showed up at the last minute only to be turned away, I
wish it could've been different. But the last tourney I had reminded me of
the importance of having a few rules then standing by them. The last
tournament also reminded me of the early days when everyone was in charge
of a tournament and no one would enforce the few rules there were. The
rules were made to make it easier on everyone and have a fun, relaxed time.
The rules are few and simple and only changed after much thought.
It was suggested to be that I would be laughed at on #hornet for the poor
turnout and having to cancel the tournament. There doesn't seem to be any
understanding of integrity and that if you can't do it right, do it the
best way you can even if it means looking bad. And that goes back to the
rules also.
As it is, the current phase of tournaments may be drawing to a close. I
have had an offer of sponsorship for at least a prize, or maybe even
prizes. I haven't decided whether to accept. But it would be limited to HKM
for Mac users. What has been done in the past would continue with an added
incentive. It bothers me of the limits and that there would be a trade off
of adding a banner for the sponsoring agency.
Come what may, the rules are few and simple. I will cut slack on them as is
warranted, but they will be observed overall regardless of the impact to me.

Dale,
As one who's run tournaments before, and knows the headache's
they can be; I don't see why anyone would begrudge you cancelling
a tournament if too few people showed up, or if the rules of
the tournament were not being followed.
I tried looking for you yesterday when Xmission was being
finicky, but couldn't. So, from now on, if there is a tournament,
and Xmission decides to go on vacation, you or anyone else
hosting a tourney is welcome to use my ARNS server. Just let
me know as far in advance is possible so I can turn it on.

<fontfamily><param>Helvetica</param><bigger><bigger><bigger>Captain
Freeman I. Howard23d Special Warfare Aviation Detachment
September 28, 1964</bigger></bigger>At 3:25 pm, 28 September 1964, two
JOV-1 aircraft
departed Vung Tau airfield and proceeded to Bac Lieu. They were piloted
by Captain Freeman I. Howard and Captain Jerrell S. Reed, Jr. The
observer with Captain Freeman was 2LT Don Ton That, an ARVN observer.
They arrived at Bac Lieu at 3:50 pm for a briefing by the 21st Division
G-2 Advisor on their mission. The departure from Vung Tau, the flight
and landing at Bac Lieu were normal. After the briefing, the pilots
manned their aircraft and Captain Howard performed his run-up checks.
According to his statement, all systems were operating normal, and full
power was available. Preparing to take off first, Captain Howard held
his brakes until full power was obtained, then allowed the aircraft to
begin rolling. Initially, a slight correction was required to
straighten
the nose wheel but it is not felt that this had anything to do with the
ensuing accident. A Captain Taylor, who was observing the take off from
the side of the runway, stated that the aircraft appeared to be
developing full power and that the initial acceleration, until the dust
obscured his vision, was normal. Captain Howard had planned to utilize
all the runway in order to obtain maximum speed. As he approached the
end of the runway, Captain Howard noticed a gravel pile just off the
end
and applied back pressure on the controls to start the rotation of the
nose. As soon as the aircraft became airborne, Captain Howard moved the
landing gear lever into the "gear up" position. At this time a jolt was
felt by him and his observer and Captain Reed, who was waiting to take
off, noticed a cloud of dust at the end of the runway. As the aircraft
gained a little altitude, Captain Taylor noticed that the landing gear
had not retracted. It is noted that neither of the pilots nor Captain
Tailor knew of the existence of the gravel pile on the end of the
runway
until after the accident. The aircraft was flown back to Vung Tau and a
determination was made not to attempt a landing there but to continue
on
to Tan Son Nhut where complete crash rescue facilities were available
including a concrete runway and foaming capability.Upon arrival
overhead
at Tan Son Nhut, approximately 3000 feet of runway was foamed for an
emergency landing. Captain Howard made three touchdown passes in an
attempt to collapse the left main gear, which was extended but
unlocked,
so a "wheels up" landing could be made. When these attempts failed and
fuel was getting low, Captain Howard elected to crash land the
aircraft.
On final approach, the canopy was blown and the aircraft was allowed
touchdown on the left main gear which somehow became locked after the
initial touchdown. The right engine was feathered and the left engine
was brought back to ground idle. Captain Howard attempted to maintain
directional control of the aircraft with rudder and aileron until the
right wing began to dip.At this time, Captain Howard placed the left
engine in full reverse, resulting in his being able to hold the
aircraft
on a nearly straight course even as the right wing settled to the
ground. As the aircraft slowed, the right pylon rack contacted the
ground and acted as a skid, keeping the wing tip from making contact
with the ground. After a roll and slide of 1475 feet on the foamed
runway, the aircraft began a turn to the right, using up an additional
325 feet of runway, and came to rest just off the right side of the
runway with only a portion of the tail protruding over the runway. Both
the pilot and the observer were uninjured in this landing.Based on
Captain Reeds' statement concerning the cloud of dust, the pilots and
observers statements on the jolt felt, Captain Taylors inspection of
the
end of the runway and the investigation by the accident board the next
day, it was determined that the aircraft struck the gravel pile located
just off the end of the runway. There were three points of disrupted
gravel on the pile coinciding with the width of the aircraft landing
gear. The point of the heaviest contact was on the right, approximately
4 inches above the runway level and several large pieces of hard packed
earth and gravel were found that had been torn loose by the impact of
the landing gear. The runway at Bac Lieu was 1,700 feet, with a width of
23 feet and the gravel pile was located 70 feet from the end of the
runway and slightly to right of centerline. The wind direction was
Westerly and not exceeding 10 knots and was not considered a factor.
The
density altitude at the time of the accident was computed at 2,280
feet.
The aircraft gross weight was computed at 13,724 pounds and in order to
obtain a speed of 85 knots the complete runway would have to be
used.The
impact sheared the front and rear trunion pins attaching the right main
gear to the air frame, ruptured the hydraulic lines and left the right
main gear hanging by the shock strut. In addition, the right flap was
split and a hole punched through the upper right wing surface. Also the
right wing spar was cracked and it was thought that it was due to the
impact with the gravel pile and not the landing.Because of the
exceptional flying skills of Capatin Howard, both he and Hawk 16 became
a Mohawk Legend on that day.</bigger></fontfamily>
