Speaking of Publicity . . . I have not seen Harvest War in any of the
Southwind Publications I have received recently. Am I just blind?
(I know there are a lot of people planning on attending, so they must
have
seen it somewhere.)

Maybe the reason you haven't seen the announcement is because you are
getting the wrong newsletter? The Kingdom newsletter is the Sage.
Contact the Kingdom Seneschal if you are indeed receiving the
Southwind. Now, if it is the Sage you are receiving, the
announcement has been in the August and September issues (however,
the directions are wrong. I believe they say to go East after taking
the Brigham City exit . . . )

The directions say turn west, but should say turn east. Fortunately the
road doesn't go very far west at that point.

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a
State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH.
He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!"
So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.
Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies-two in
the front seat and three in the back-wide eyed and white as ghosts. The
driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand,
I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"
"Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should
know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to
other
drivers."
"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit
exactly...Twenty- two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly.
The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her
that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit.
A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for
pointing out her error.
"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this
car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a
single
peep this whole time," the officer asks.
"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route
119."

Angus here.
Francesca and I went up the the site yesterday, and I have some questions for
the list as a whole and those good gentles with more Harvest experience than I
in particular.
First off, there will be courts. Where do we usually hold them? We
don't take up many chairs, how do we deal with the mechanics of them, I have
been having a hard time visualizing it.
HL Lynette had the idea of setting up the Shire pavilion on the far
side of the firepit in area A. We checked that out, and we think that will
work. Also, the trail that extends back to the individual campsites behind A is
in many places wide enough to put in tents. There are at least 2 places where
we could put our tent, and several smaller such areas, all without blocking the
trail. Maybe we could put a few such tents up back in that area? We have
discussed using the Shire Pavilion for a slumber party/mass sleeping room. I
have considered putting up our tent back of the Pavilion and using it's two
side cabins as Lord's and Ladies dressing chambers, which will be quite useful
to have if we do use the Pavilion in that way. Any ideas along these lines
would be helpful.
The current (as of 10 minutes ago) fire risk is 'moderate,' no fire
restrictions. while I at least am praying for a dry event, I am also praying
for some good wet this week and maybe monday & tuesday next week. Any who wish
to join me are welcome!
We usually put Thunder up on the administrative site, away from the
permanent residents. I am wondering how much of that meddow we have access too,
and would it be possible to put even more people than just Thunder up there?
Perhaps on the other side of the traditional battlefield? I don't want campers
to get in the way of the fighting, but it was kind of nice to have the
battlefield surrounded by campsites at Estrella, and it would give us more
room.
With the increased number of people we are expecting, should I ask for
more Port-a-potties? I am going to specifically ask for a handicaped accessible
one for sure. We currently have 3 on order, but the dealer told me to call him
monday and verify it. I could easily change my order at that time. Any ideas?
For anybody interested in our Thursday night prep thing, I have reserved Area A
(the usual shire area). This is both bigger, more convenient, and cheaper than
previous ideas, so take that into consideration.
Comments and discussion on any of these ideas, and any other you may have,
would be greatly appreciated. I beg them, actually.
Yours in Service,
Angus

Usually courts are held in the hollow among the trees where the tables are.
This area provides seating, shade, and some seclusion.

This sounds workable.

The fence at the far end (south) of the open field is the end of that area.
There is usually so much debris at the north end that I wouldn't suggest
putting anyone there. To the west of the trees in the admin area is a
fairly open place where we once had archery that could be used for camping,
no trees though. To the east of the debris on the main field is a place
for a few tents. Earl Sir Reynard had his pavillion there last year. We
could use the area west of the road through the battlefield near the woods
battle site for some tents.

The potty guy told me last year that the only potty that got heavy use was
the one in the admin area. If we put more people up there we WILL need
more potties there. The potty in the admin area was a handicap accessible,
this probably should have been put in the main camping area. Areas A, B
and C are not so very far from the flush toilets. If you have two placed
in the parking lot between C and D and two up in the admin area that should
suffice.

Yes, pray for rain before the event.

Angus here
Mistress Rebecca responded personally to this post earlier, and there are some
things in it I think we all should see, so I am forwarding much. I will add a
few comments.
>> We usually put Thunder up on the administrative site, away from the
>> permanent residents. I am wondering how much of that meddow we have access too,
>> and would it be possible to put even more people than just Thunder up there?
<snip>
Landolph recomended increasing camping there by essentially swelling the size
of the camp. We could do that.
>I *definitely* wouldn't allow fires of any kind in the meadow (no
>campstoves, coleman lanterns, candles, nothing).
Yep.
>Have you figured out what you are going to do for a fire lane?
I haven't (though I should have) thought about that. Were you refering to the
space behind A? I don't think we should block the trail, just be next to it. I
don't remember any street's etc. in any of the camping areas last year. any
recomendations?
>Traditionally the Troll booth has been in Area B. Could it be set

That is a good idea. We had thought of putting it in that little spur of area
B, in front of the Forest service sign/map (Would that be okay?) That is a
little space, which could be used. We have usually put merchants in area B, and
they often camp with their stuff. Do we expect that again? I was planning on
it.

Good idea.
>Are you planning a volunteer raffle?
I wasn't orriginally, but with increassed attendance, I think it will be a good
idea. I have told all merchants that I may request a small gift for such a
raffle, and none seemed to mind.
>Do you have a chirurgeon lined up? Does the shire have a first aid

Lady Camilla has agreed to be my deputy Event steward for Chiurgeon and water
bearing. She was also investigating a Shire first aid kit. I should follow up
on her...
>Do you want us to have our cell phone on site?
Please. We don't want any emergencies, but if there are any, it would be
invaluable.

This is a good idea, I will deffinetely do so. I will also enforce it on Shire

Good thoughts, but I haven't been paying much attention to the dinner (other
than planning it for Friday night!). I thought Lady Isabeau, HL Lynnette and
Master Jurgi were planning that, I was letting it happen. I am not adverse to
saying "No money, no food" though. Prepayment would, of course, be acceptable.

Unto the Populace of Artemisia does the Shire of Gryphon's Lair send
greetings. This is a gentle reminder that the Crown Tournament for selecting
the Artemisian Heirs is to be held October 10th at the Comfort Suites Inn in
Ogden, Utah. If you are planning on attending Feast, we need PAID
reservations no later than October 1. This is a catered feast, and we need to
pre-pay and verify with the caterer the Number of people they are cooking for!
Therefore, an unpaid reservation is considered no reservation, and you will
not eat. No off board seating can be allowed in the feast hall, due to site
contract regulations. This is all per the site owner, not us, so please
understand. Court is to be held after Feast at Their Majesties' discretion.
If you are interested in taking advantage of the discounted hotel room rates
of $62 + tax per night (a room will sleep up to 6 people!) you must arrange
this with the hotel. 1-800-462-9925 is the worldwide #, 801-621-2545 is the

There is little to no shade, so period pavilions/sunshades are welcome,

Merchants are welcomed with open checkbooks!

Master Jurgen,
I had a wonderful time at the Harvest War. This being my first event in this
kingdom, it couldn't have been better. Everyone was wonderful. I know how
tough it can be to coordinate all the tiny things that you have to think about
for an event like this, and you and yours did a fabulous job.
In future, I shall try to attend events hosted by Cote du Ciel.

If I am pale by comparrison, it is due to the horror and disgust I
experience when those of you who claim to be "Fighters" never bring your
Armor to practice! Oh, by the way, I accept!
Pale Rider (jurgi) or is that "Pail writer"?

Juergi,
If the skin fits....
Are you sure you want to fight after last weekend? I am pooped and did not even
fight. By the way, I am glad that you know how to write pail. Those four-letter
words are tough. You know...Death rides a pale horse, so he is a knight, so are
you trying to clue us in on something??? I seeeee, I seeeee.... a white belt and a

Again, another message from the Artemisian list. Shall we "pass the
helm" at fighter practice?
Rebecca
------- Forwarded Message Follows -------
Reply-to: artemisia@server.umt.edu
Unto the populace of Artemisia,
As most of the good people on this list may already know Lady Katerina
Elizabeth de Clisson Caimbeul, also known as Karen Tanner, passed away this
weekend.
Lady Katerina was the Seneschal for our Shire for the past few months,
prior to that, she served as our Chonicler for a number of years. Since
moving to our Shire she has been a very large part of our lives and we will
all miss her very much.
But our pain and grieving cannot compare to what her husband, Lord
Sionainn (Jason Tanner) , and child (Ben) are going through now. We hurt most
of all for thier loss.
Our Katerina was only 28, her whole life before her. Years to plan for
the future as she and Sionainn raised their son Ben, who, by the way, turned
three years old today. The day after his mother passed away. Years to plan and
prepare for what may come. Who knew there would be less time.
It is our hope to ease the hardship that now faces the two she left
behind. We wish to establish a fund to help defray the cost of the buriel and
related expenses. Three weeks in ICU, no income from her job, and Sionainn
missing almost as much time from work has put them in a less than ideal
financial situation. The funeral costs on top of that...
And so I come to you with a plea for help. I ask on the behalf of Lord
Sionainn and Ben, (who would never ask himself) If anyone can find it within
thier means to help, donations can be sent to Jason Tanner, c/o Doug Guibord,
4075 Jefferson ave. Ogden Utah 84403
I thank you all for taking the time to read this and thank you as well
in advance for any and all support.
With heavy heart,
H.L. Don Tarkesh,
Captain-General,
Black Wing Company.
Current Defender of the Sable Rose
and one very sad man for the loss of a wonderful part of our Kingdom, Katerina

When I spoke with Lord Sionnin at Harvest War he said that she had
pneumonia. She had been in intensive care for several weeks. That day (19
Sep) she had awakened, opened her eyes and squeezed his hand.
Sionnin indicated in a post to the Aerie, not long before her death, that
Katerina was improving. I don't know exactly what actually caused her
death other than it was a complication of the pneumonia.

A man walks into a healthfood restaurant after a day at the
office, sits down and orders a nice big dish of brown rice
and stir-fry veggies.
He grabs a handful of peanuts from the bowl on the counter
by the cash register while he's waiting for his order, and
as he starts to chew he hears a voice say, "That's a
beautiful tie, is that silk? Very NICE choice!"
Wondering who would make such a strange comment, he looks
around and doesn't see anyone near him who could've been
speaking to him. With a shrug, he pops a few more peanuts
into his mouth.
Next he hears a voice, "Those shoes are stylin', my man.
Are they Italian leather? They look GRRREAT!"
He whirls around to look again but sees no one near him. He
glances nervously around and then at his shoes, which he
tucks self-consciously under the stool.
A little wierded out, he grabs another handful of peanuts.
This time the voice continues with, "That suit looks
FANTASTIC! Is it an Armani? Very nice!"
He immediately calls the waiter over and says, "Look. I
keep hearing these voices telling me how great my tie, my
shoes, and my suit look -- What's up with that?
Am I GOING CRAZY??"
"Oh," the waiter nonchalantly replies, "those are just the
peanuts."
"The PEANUTS?!?" the astonished man asks, staring at the
bowl beside him.
"Yes," replies the waiter, ". . . they're complimentary !!"

This is a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for paid feast

If you want to go to the event but not eat feast, you can pay site
fee that day. Landolf and I are going to the event and have room
for 4 riders (comfortably) or 6 riders (cozily). Let one of us know
if you want a ride. You won't have to pay for gas because we are

I just can't figure out why Griffin's Lair is looking outside their area
for sites. Why should they hold two events per year in our area when there
are far more resources in the Weber valley.
My feelings are that if they have soiled their nest so badly that they
can't live in it, it is not our responsibility to provide them with a new
location that they can screw up.

I agree with Sir Landolf. Gryphons Lair events should be in Gryphons Lair,
as Cote du Ciel events are in Core du Ciel. Using the suggested site would, to
me, be like Cote du Ciel asking the Barony if we could hold our Birthday event
in Salt Lake because we found a cool site there. Would it not then become a
