There are no known members in Malad. The group would technically
belong to 1000 Eyes in Idaho Falls./ Squire William is trying to
start an Incipient Shire in Lava Hot Springs. That would then be the
closest besides us. In Malad I think is about in the middle.

murder pancakes with the Shire once again. Looking forward to seeing
all of you on Friday. Unsure of the time we will be in, but planning

Landolf has a copy (it may be the shire's copy, I'm not sure). I
have been trying to make several copies of it for shire members who
want it, but I've been sidetracked and haven't finished copying it.
I have five copies started. Is that enough or should I make more?

I would love to have a copy of the handbook! How much will the copying
cost you?
BTW, is the Summerfest still on for the 18th of this month? I believe
both Arkasha and I will be available for it in the evening hours! It
was great fun last year!

It only costs a penny or two per copy at the high school. I think
there are about 150 pages, so cost will be less than $2.

I don't know. I turned that demo over to Grainne. I won't be at

Great!! I'm glad it won't cost much... Other than time, I guess! :)
We might not be at practice either; I guess we'll see what happens! I
don't trust my car to make it to Brigham, but if Arkasha hasn't got
other plans, we might come down in his car. I'll ask Grainne about it
either way...

Subject: (cdc) Tursach!
Date: 29 Jun 1998 20:02:55 -0600
We raised our standing stone this weekend. First we used levers to raise
the top of it, and it pivoted over the edge of the hole. We kept raising it
a few inches at a time, adding 2" cement blocks as we went, until we had it
about 35-45 degrees from the horizontal. At that point, lacking a large
crew of Picts, we fastened a strap around it and pulled it with our
Freightliner (We drive a truck for a living.)
The first time, it tipped to one side; we didn't have the truck perfectly
straight with the direction the stone wanted to go. The second time (after
levering it back up again) it went up nice and straight, but my wife didn't
stop the truck soon enough, and it went right on over. The third time, I
put short lengths of 2X4 into the hole, so it would have something firm to
settle against. We pulled it up and stopped a little short of vertical;
the stone had again shifted to one side by about 10-15 degrees. We pounded
more lengths of 2x4 around the base of the stone, and backed the truck up to
let the slack off, and the stone held. We unhooked the strap and started to
move the truck to finish straightening the stone up; unfortunately one
drive-wheel was in a little depression. It is a peculiarity of dual
drive-axle trucks, that if one wheel loses traction, it just spins. There
is a control which "supposedly" locks the axles together, kind of like
"positraction." But it never works very well. It just means two wheels at
opposite corners, both spin.
So finally I went and talked to a neighbort with a small farm tractor, and
he pulled our truck out of its little hole and then he pulled the stone
straight for us. The stone stands very firm; about 1 1/2 feet of it are
underground. I pounded the dirt around its base with a hammer and a piece
of wood. I pushed against it, and it shifted minutely in its socket, but I
think it would not go over short of a major earthquake or a tractor pulling
on it. Once the soil gets wet and packs down around it, I think it would
resist the earthquake.
It stands about 5'5" tall, just a little shorter than I am. It seems happy
with its new spot, and once the trees grow up around and shade it a wee
bit, I think it will be a marvellous place to sit and ponder the Mysteries.
Latha math dhuibh!
