The winners of the East Kingdom Crown Tournament held this day are Duke Brion
and Duchess Anna of Tarragon, lately of the Kingdom of Atenveldt.
In what two Eastern dukes told me was an unprecedented situation, there was a
three-person final in East Kingdom Crown Tourney. The three finalists, all
unbeaten until the finals, were Sir Balin de Valiere, Sir Andreas der
Eisfalk, and Duke Brion of Tarragon. A round robin was held to determine who
would go to the finals; Sir Balin was eliminated. Then in the finals Duke
Brion bested Sir Andreas in two rounds, first with polearm and then with
great weapon.
Although Sir Balin did not win, Sir Mitchell MacBain pointed out to me that
Sir Balin does now have the distinction of being the first person ever to best
Duke Brion in an Eastern Crown Tournament bout.

Two things:
The site opens for SET UP at 6:30 am. I would appreciate any
help I can get at that hour. The site opens at 9 am for the event.
The Troll and competition registration must be set up and ready to go
by that time.
Sometime ago I was looking for a place to hold the off-site brewing
competition. I had decided to just have it at my home, but Landolf
is not as well as I had hoped by this time, and I would rather not do
it there. There are only 3 entries by 2 people that I know of, so we
don't need a lot of space. It just has to be off-campus. I vaguely
remember someone offering their home once but I can't remember who
it was. If anyone knows who it was, or has space they can offer for
the brewing competition, please let me know ASAP!

Lots of stuff to hear! 3 new AoAs, 2 Pillars and a Grant.
AoA:
Lady Camila de Luna
Lord Rand Wulf
Lady Rixa d'Ailete
Pillars:
Lady Heidi
Lord Arkadi'i L'vovich
Her Ladyship Lynnette Huntington
Also, Ian MacLeod from Sentinels keep was sent on his Chivalric Vigil for
Uprising.
Katerina (Karen) Witkowski won the children's competition, while Maddy won
Queen's choice. Lady Grainia is Lady of Weaving and Lady of Dance, Master
Jurgi is Lord of Metalwork, THL Lynnette is Lady of Caligraphic arts, and
won Populace choice for Jurgi's Laurel Scroll (and it is *Incredible*).
Champion, and newest Laurel of the kingdom, is Mistress Agness, who I am
sorry I didn't catch the last name or home of. Maybe somebody else on the
list did and can report it?
Sir Landolph was put back in the hospital friday night bacause he wasn't
keeping enough liquids down, but came back home Saturday. Despite this,
Rebecca was wonderful at the event. Arkasha and Lady Trewren helped her out
a lot. And that doesn't list all those local gentles who helped Mistress
Rowena run the competition.
There were more people present with wounded legs than I've seen in a long
time, Master Nicolo has a blown out knee, Mistress Rowena sprained an
ankle, and somebody else broke an ankle.
Not surprisingly, Court was loud and fun, with Borks flying fast and furious.

Thanks for all the good info. Congratulations to all who won and who
received such well deserved awards. Vivat!! (it is fun to say that
since we say Huzzah out here, blah.). Once Neva described her to me,
I recognized the winner as Agnes of Arn Hold (Sorry, Jurgen.).
On the bad leg note, two of my friends in the SCA have blown out
their knees within the last few months. Some of you might remember
the couple tht we brought from the West to Estrella this year, Lord
Andrew and Lady Irena (Irena is the one who got the sliver of the
first thrones of the SCA for Artemisia). She blew out her knee over
a month ago and had surgery 2 weeks ago to do an ACL (ligament
replacement). She is doing well, walking in a brace. When she
recovers and is walking well enough, they will operate again to
replace some "padding" in the knee that has worn away. Sorry this is
so long, but some CdCielians met her at the war and I wanted to
update you all on her condition.
Hoping to see some of you at Uprising, if we make it. Jurgen is
everything still on? Should we still come? Let us know.

I believe the Arts & Sciences Champion who was also made a laurel was
Mistress Agnes of Whitby.
The lady who broke her ankle was one of my house guests, Lucretcia, from
Montana. She had had surgery to repair it and couldn't put weight on
it, but there was no way she was missing this event! :) She was a real
trooper!

Juergi,
Wait, I thought you were a Demi-god laurel thing, my world is crumbling
around me!!!
(Just Kidding) I wasn't there the whole time, but I am a bit curious
about some judging things. I mean, I realize that no matter what there
is still human error in it, but it seems to me that the way it was done
was somewhat off. Couldn't it be that judges be certified in the same
way that say, fighters are? Wouldn't it be better if you had to pass
some kind of test or something. Personal bias I guess. We bred cats
for a long time. The judging there, as with dogs, are done by judges
who have had to meet a large number of requirements. Let's face it,
even the best artisans are not the best judges and vice versa. I don't
want to be too critical, but I think things could be a little better.

You have addressed some valid concerns. How are judges chosen? How
you can you be sure that the person judging your work even knows
anything about it? It would be great if we could get judges who
actually had some experience in the areas that they are judging, but
unfortunately there are several reasons why that doesn't happen.
First reason: if you are entering in a category, you are not allowed
to judge that category--"they" don't want you judging your own stuff
(who better to judge the category than someone who has entered
it--they are the ones with the knowledge and experience) Now, I have
a little problem with artisans not being allowed to judge their own
work. Fighters who have entered in Crown tourney and when
victorious will be the ruling Monarch are allowed to judge
themselves--they determine whether a blow will kill them or not.
Certainly there have been instances where a fighter has been
unchivalrous and chosen not to take a blow which should have taken
him out of the tournament, but by and far, most fighters judge
fairly. Are artisans not capable of judging fairly as well? Second
reason: if you are going for Champion you can't judge any category
of anything. The reason being that you may unfairly judge another's
work so that you win instead of them. Again, this goes back to my
first reason. Third reason: no pre-registration. Without
pre-registration there is no way of knowing who will be entering so
you don't know what kind of judges to get. Fourth reason: it is
just plain tough to get good judges. If someone is good at
something, generally they will be entering the competition (and that
means they can't judge anyway). It is also difficult to get the
expert from, say, Sentinels' Keep to the competition in, say, Arrow's
Flight. If judges were paid for their travel, perhaps we would get a
better pick of judges. But payment isn't going to happen. We are a
non-profit volunteer organization after all. Fifth reason: even if
you had the most experienced and knowledgeable individuals judging,
there is still no guarantee of across-the-board fairness. Every
judge has their own little pet peeves. For example, I will never
give a bobbin lace piece made with modern "plastic" metallic threads
full marks in authenticity. Even if the person made it on a totally
period pillow they stuffed themselves and hand-carved the bobbins and
used real parchment for the pattern and thorns and fishbones for
pins. Even though the only real alternative to modern metallics is
so prohibitively expensive that no one could afford it, I would still
mark them a point or two off in authenticity, because the modern
thread does not look period to me. Sixth reason (related to the last
reason): Some supplies for authentic arts reproduction cannot be
obtained or made and there is no modern substitute. Some judges
realize this and let it slide. Others will not. Seventh reason:
Some arts have never been done before so all research is brand new
and the individual entering the project is the only person in the
Knowne World to have done it (the art becomes "magic"). Other arts
are so commonly practiced that almost everyone has some knowledge in
that area. This leads to the magic category getting higher
scores and the more common arts getting lower scores.
There is simply no way that the judging can be fair in all ways. But
I think we could do better to get more qualified judges.
Just my ramblings . . .
Rebecca

Rebecca -
There are a few great judges in this world, and I tend to think that you
make one of the best. There are many concerns about the way things are
judged. I know that finding experienced judges is critical to the fairness
of the competition, but also very unreasonable and almost impossible in a
realistic view of the world.
Unfortunately in our world of the SCA there is also the realism of bias.
Unfortunately, and perhaps against the will of the entrant there are judges
who give easier and better marks to artisans they know. Or in their lack
of understanding of the subject they give better marks to the one that is
visually pleasing vs. the one which is more authentic.
It is unfortunate that we can't all be perfect judges and perfect fighters,
that our personality flaws keep us from being better neighbors and better
people. However, if this were true there would be little to fight about in
this world, and people would tend to get along.
Just my two cents.
Gwfy.

One note on judging. There is one thing on which I know I am a good judge,
and that is storytelling/monologue performance. I may be skilled in other
areas as well, but that is something I do know. But it is also something I
am interested in entering. I have wrestled in my own mind about if it is
better to enter in that field, or to continue to judge, in order to further
the art. Any comments?
On a different note, I was unable to get quite enough examples of SCA
favors at the event (between Mck'ee and doing the event, ran out of time).
No regrets, but I would like all members of the Shire who will be coming to
practices in the near future to please bring any personal favors they may
have, so that I can document them! If you are willing to, of course. I will
not document anything that people want to keep private. (Though if you wear
them in public, why should you mind!)

Hi Jurgi!
Well everyone, we (Mel and I) just finished our term on court for the Mists.
Prince Helmut and Princess Lydia were benign rulers over these homelands of
the SCA and the fates have smiled upon us all. Saturday, Helmut and Lydia
stepped down from the princedom and passed the duties and responsibilities
of this realm to their heirs, Richard and Corinne.
For those of you that may have been unaware, Mel was one of Her Highesses
ladies-in-waiting and principle seamstress, while I served as member of the
Princesses Escort. This provided both of us with a much needed push into
activity. We have told many the tales of our home (CdC) and the fair and
virtuous populace that we call family.
I thank you all for the vision that you have helped to create. I pray that
fate may treat you kindly and providence will always be your friend.
On pilgrimage and errancy,
- Baldwin Giffard
P.S. Ask Mel about the POG!

Greetings unto the Senechales of Artemisia,
Please accept my apologies for the lateness of this request!! This letter
was put into my hands Thursday the 14th and I was asked to e-mail it to all
the groups. It should have gone out at least a month ago. Please e-mail
me back and let me know whether your group will be able to bring items to
the Queen's Tea.
Thank You Very Much!!

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Unto all the ears of the Great Kingdom of Artemisia. Uprising is almost
upon us. Her Majesty's Tea will be held Saturday, June 6th at 4:00 PM in
conjunction with the Laurel's Prize Tourney.
As autocrats for the Queen's Tea, we are asking for help from the populace
of Artemisia. We are requesting that each Barony, Shire, Canton, etc
donate finger foods or finger desserts in the amount of 6 dozen. Here is
your opportunity to show off your groups culinary skills and to tempt Her
Majesty's discerning palate. Any offering of chocolate will be greatly
appreciated.
There will be limited cooler space available for storage with the
autocrats. Thank you in advance for your generous donation of goodies.
Please contact us for more information or if we can assist you in any way.

Subject: (cdc) (Fwd) Telephone Scam
Date: 27 May 1998 10:56:09 -0700
Dear friends and family:
I hate it when people send around messages that turn out to be scams
and hoaxes. I always check it out first. This is a legitimate scam
and so I am sending the information on to you. A week or so ago we
had part of a message on our answering machine that sounds
dangerously close to this same thing. Mike Huie is the technology
representative at Logan High School. His wife works at North
Park. The principal of North Park was the one who called to verify
the information. North Park elementary is in North Logan, Utah.
Rebecca
------- Forwarded Message Follows -------
Organization: Logan High School
BE AWARE!
The following took place at North Park Elementary School last week:
Someone we know received a telephone call from an individual
identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a
test on our telephone lines. He state that to complete the test you
should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#) and then hang up.
Luckily, they were suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company they were informed that by
pushing 90# you give the requesting individual full access to your
telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone
calls billed to your home phone number. They were further informed
that this scam has been originating from many of the local
jails/prisons. They have also verified this information with UCB
Telecomm.
Please beware. This sounds like an Urban Legend - IT IS NOT! They
further called GTE Security this morning and verified that his is
definitely possible. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security
department requested that they share this information with EVERYONE
THEY KNOW!!

Subject: (cdc) Renaissance Faire
Date: 27 May 1998 13:43:10 -0700
Are we having a Faire this weekend?
Do we have any merchants?
Do we have any booths?
Do we have any entertainment?
Has there been any publicity?
Will the weather clear up?
Will there be any help from shire members?
As of today, we have not had any offers of help from any other group
besides Sommerville Manor.
Zivio, the "gypsy" music group will not be coming because the
daughter of the leader of the group is critically ill in the
hospital.
Here is a list of pavillions that I know of in the shire:
Shire "Panther" pavillion
Shire "viking" pavillion
6 stall areas (made of 2x2's and cardboard)
Landolf & Rebecca's canvas shade
Bjorn's "Bubba"
If anyone has access to or can think of any other pavillions we have,
let me know.
I am extremely worried about this year's Faire. Unfortunately, I
haven't been much help because of mundane matters.
An update on Landolf: he developed blood clots in his legs which
don't seem to be getting better despite the blood thinners he is on.
If he hasn't shown improvement by the end of the week, the doctor
will put him in the hospital for a couple of days with an IV drip of
a stronger drug. (so he might be in the hospital during the Faire.
I think he has something about being in the hospital and shire
events.)

Here's an update:
As far as I know, yes there will be a Faire.
I don't know anything about merchants, but I know Heidi will have a
booth, and I know at least three people, including myself, have
things to sell.
We do have booths! And shire members who have pledged to help.
Here's a short list:
Quilting
Fighting
Chainmail
Games
Jewelry
Weaving
Spinning
Rapier
Information
Dancing
We have 22 shire members who will be there all day. And several more
who will be there part of the day. (We have only a few kid
volunteers from outside the shire, but I believe several will just
show up on the given day.) We also have the Juvenile Restitution
Group ready and willing to help set up on Friday, I just need some
information on what time to have them show up and then whether we
need them on Saturday and what times.
Entertainment: I don't know who the group that put on a play for us
last year is, and I hope someone else is "chairman-ing" that one.
Publicity-wise, I think that we have put some fliers in the USU
cafeteria and all around town. I don't really know what else on this
one.
We'll just cross our fingers and hope Saturday's weather is as nice
as today has been!
Pavillions: I'll leave that one to other people to answer. I do
have a couple of tables to volunteer if we need them.
Anyone else have input?

Add lacemaking to the booth list. Karin and I will demonstrate and
have a pillow or two available for people who want to try it out.

We have the site from about 2-ish till dark on Friday. I don't know
what time to tell them to show up on Friday because I don't know what
time "big set-up stuff" will be there. I will have several loads
of stuff, but if the van doesn't get fixed by then, I won't have the
van to haul stuff with (the sliding side door needs a new door latch)
If there is anyone that can haul stuff from my house that would be
great. There will be a couple of loads of tables and chairs to pick
up at the Whittier. The earliest I can be on site is about 4 because
I don't get off work until 3. Saturday morning I plan to be there
between 6 and 7 am.

The play group from last year was from Sommerville Manor and they
won't be performing this year (they won't have their play ready until
the July Faire). I had asked Logan high if they might be able to do
part of Midsummer, but that isn't going to happen.

We *do* need a dozen posters to go on the wooden "A-shaped" signs to
go up on main street on the day of the Faire. Is there someone who
can get posterboard and markers and have these done at fighter
practice? They just need to say "Renaissance Faire Today, Willow
Park, 11 am to 6 pm".

Well, The Juv. Restitution kids are available from 3pm - 6pm... I think
we should just set the time at 4- 4:30pm for set up. They have a
trailer that they have offered to let us use: how 'bout I set it up that
they meet at Willow Park at 4pm and then we go to your house and load up
all the stuff? This way we can tell every one to bring pavillions and
what-not to the park before 4pm. After we get your stuff, we can use
the trailer to go to the Whittier and load up the tables and chairs.
Then we can use what time is left for the kids to help set up at the
park. I'll be at practice tonight and I'll try to get a count on the
pavillions and get a definite list of who will be there for set up and
the all-night guarding. Do we have a plan/map of where and how we want
stuff set up at the park?
If I hear from you here on the list, I can call Keith at Juv Res and let
him know when we need them today! Shall I have them come on Saturday?
What time? Just for take down (what time)? Use them as
runners/volunteers? Don't know how many kids we'll have yet.

wondering if we should have a heraldry booth. I know Mei Li has come down
from 1000 eyes and done one for us in the past. We now have several people
in the shire interested in book heraldry, maybe we can pull this off. What

Mei Li will not be coming this year (no one from 1000 Eyes will be
coming). The reason we chose not to have a heraldry booth was that
it never seemed to be very popular. I don't know if it is because we
didn't find a way to make it interesting, there were too many other
more interesting things going on, or if Mei Li scared kids off.

I think this may be something to consider for next year. I think we are
stressed as it is for this one. I bet we could do something really cool if we
put our minds to it. Also to think about, there are 3 bowyers in our
area--again for next year, maybe, so whoever has the packets for booths and
such...just an idea.Rand

I am such a geek! I made plans for people to meet at 4pm today to begin
the set up and load up of items needed for the faire... But I have to
work 'til 6pm and can't get out early today! Arkasha will be meeting
the Juvenile Restitution kids and their leader at 4pm at the park. Then
he'll direct them in loading up stuff onto their trailer at Rebecca's
house. Then back to the park and then to the Whittier for tables and
chairs. Hopefully, by then more people from the shire will be there
(including my-dorky-self) and we'll set up to our hearts content!
See you there!
Camilla
PS: Rebecca, I need the phone number to reach someone at the Whittier
board to remind them that they're invited to come out and take money on
Saturday.

If the Juv Res kids could get the tables and chairs first that would
help me. I still need to pull out stuff to bring, and since I won't
be home from work much before 4 pm, that doesn't give me much time to
have things ready for them to pick up. Someone will need to get the
Whittier key from me, however, because the Whittier is keeping the
gym locked due to vandalism.

I have already picked up the money box from the Whittier and they
