  29. Welcome!  This list is for fiction related to "Buffy The Vampire 
  30. Slayer," both the TV series and the movie.  To ensure that we all get 
  31. to enjoy as much fiction as possible, please adhere to the following 
  32. guidelines, and please save them for future reference.
  33.  
  34. 1. Fiction should have Buffy characters in it and clearly be related 
  35. to Buffy.  Crossovers are great, and expected, but general 
  36. vampire/monster stories that aren't in the Buffy universe and don't 
  37. use Buffy characters belong somewhere else.
  38.  
  39. 2. Discussion of posted fiction is permitted onlist.  Please put 
  40. "DISCUSS" in your subject line.  Requests for missing story parts 
  41. should go directly to the author, and not be posted to the list.
  42.  
  43. Discussion that is not related directly to the fiction should go over 
  44. to the general Buffy list.  Discussion of fiction is expected to 
  45. follow common netiquette guidelines and use PG-13 language.
  46.  
  47. 3. No advertising of <any> items or services, Buffy related or not, 
  48. and no posting of non-story items such as .gifs, sound files, etc..  
  49. No attached files of <any> kind-- if your mailer makes your fiction 
  50. into attached files, you need to find another way to get it to the list.
  51.  
  52. 4. If you're writing a story and including advance information on a 
  53. new episode, and you're posting your story earlier than the national 
  54. viewing time, please:
  55.  
  56.      **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header.  
  57.      **Leave about twelve lines (blank or with non-spoiler info) at 
  58.           the top of the post.
  59.  
  60. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode 
  61. ahead of time is "protected."  :)   The blank space is for people whose 
  62. mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving 
  63. them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header.
  64.  
  65. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's 
  66. national viewing time, which is currently set at 9 p.m. Mondays, 
  67. Eastern Standard Time.  Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns.
  68.  
  69. 5.  This list is absolutely NOT for erotic fiction.  <Nothing> stronger 
  70. than sexually PG-13 material is to be posted to the list under any 
  71. circumstances.  A story may be R rated for violence or language, however.
  72.  
  73. If you have a question about something's suitability for posting, feel 
  74. free to ask one of the listowners.  Sending sexually explicit material 
  75. will get you immediately and permanently unsubscribed.  No exceptions.
  76.  
  77. 6.  By subscribing and/or posting to this list, you acknowledge that 
  78. Buffy the Vampire slayer and all characters associated with either 
  79. the televised series or the motion picture were created by Josh Whedon 
  80. and are owned by Mutant Enemy productions, Kuzui Productions, 
  81. Sandollar Productions, and 20th Century Fox.  All stories posted to 
  82. this list are for entertainment purposes only, are not sold for profit 
  83. of any kind, and are not intended to infringe on any copyrights.

  85. 7.  When posting stories to the list, please follow the following 
  86. formatting guidelines
  87. - --No story parts longer than 250 lines
  88. - --No more than three (3) story parts posted per day
  89. - --No lines longer than 75 characters
  90. - --Turn off your "smart quotes"-- many readers receive these as garbage 
  91. or weird symbols
  92. - --Put the title of the story in the subject header, indicate if it's a 
  93. multipart story, and if so what part this is.  Example:   Buffy Meets 
  94. Godzilla (2/65) indicates that this post is part two of a 65 part story.
  95.  
  96. 8. If a story is rated "R" for language/violence, indicate this in an 
  97. introduction.  For example, "There's a really bloody fight scene at 
  98. the end of this part" or "if you don't like dismemberment, stop 
  99. reading now!"  If there's <any> chance that someone might be disturbed 
  100. by something in your story (even if it's not rated R) please include 
  101. some kind of warning up front.
  102.  
  103. 9.  And last, but not least, the listowners reserve the right to deny 
  104. subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any 
  105. individual(s).
  106.  
  107. PLEASE NOTE:  not following any or all of these rules will get you 
  108. the following:
  109.  
  110. **First offense:  offender is unsubscribed for one week.  
  111. **Second offense:  offender is unsubscribed to the Buffyfic list for a 
  112. minimum of three months.  
  113. **If the offender returns and does it again, they're offlist 
  114. permanently.
  115.  
  116. As noted above, posting sexually explicit material is the exception -- 
  117. you go straight to permanent unsubbing.

  188. Summary:  Buffy has to deal with a decision she's made.

  190. Author's Notes:  All that I can say was that I was in a weird mood when
  191. I wrote this.  
  192. This was partially inspired by Lori McDonald's 'Split Second Decision'.

  195.     She waited at his door, her arms wrapped around her thin body
  196. protectively.  When he finally appeared, the door swinging open beneath
  197. his hand, she looked up at him with wide, lost eyes that tore at his
  198. heart.
  199.  
  200.     "Buffy, what are you doing here?" Angel asked, drawing her into his
  201. apartment with a gentle pull.
  202.  
  203.     She didn't answer immediately.  Rather, she threw herself into his
  204. arms, wrapping herself around him with a soft sigh.  "Make me _forget_
  205. Angel.  Please..."
  206.  
  207.     "Buffy..." 
  208.  
  209.     His protest died when her lips latched onto his with a desperate
  210. hunger.  "Make me forget, Angel."
  211.

  215.     "I'm sorry.  I'm so, so sorry.  There was nothing I could do.  It was
  216. too late.  Oh God, there was nothing--" 
  217.  
  218.     Willow latched onto the trembling Slayer's arm, her eyes wide and
  219. worried.  "What happened?  Please, you're scaring me, Buffy!"
  220.  
  221.     They were waiting for her, their faces already drawn and worried.  But
  222. they didn't _know_.  They didn't know!  "I'm so sorry!  I couldn't save
  223. him.... I couldn't save Giles!"  She was sobbing, the harsh cries
  224. escaping from her with no effort to hold them back.
  225.  
  226.     "Giles?" Willow gasped, her hand tightening around Buffy's arm as she
  227. struggled to stop swaying.  "He's..."  Her head shook in denial, and
  228. tears formed in her wide green eyes.
  229.  
  230.     "I couldn't help him!" Buffy barely choked out.
  231.  
  232.     'Liar!' her mind hissed.  
  233.  
  234.     "I couldn't!"
  235.

  239.     Her hands clutched at him desperately, holding him to her with all of
  240. her strength.  Small hands trained to rid the world of evil trailed over
  241. his bare back.  The almost feverish warmth of her trembling body warmed
  242. the cold expanse of his flesh.

  244.     "Angel," she whimpered into his shoulder, her hands restlessly roaming
  245. his back without leaving contact with him for the slightest moment. 
  246. "Please..." 
  247.  
  248.     He understood her plea, his body moving against her and letting her
  249. mind fly free from it's self made cage of guilt and shame for an all too
  250. brief moment.
  251.  
  252.     As her body stilled, and her mind came crashing back into it's prison,
  253. and once again, she was drowning within herself.
  254.  
  255.

  257.  
  258.     His eyes were angry, full of rage and accusal.  "You lied to us,
  259. Buffy!  You told us that you couldn't help him!"
  260.  
  261.     "I couldn't!" Buffy nearly shrieked, glaring at Xander as if she could
  262. keep his words at bay by the pure force of her desire to deny them.  "I
  263. tried!  I tried!  I did!"
  264.  
  265.     He looked at her with disgust backing away from her in a physical
  266. display of the emotion she could so clearly hear in his voice.  "You
  267. chose Angel over Giles' life.  You let a monster live rather than the
  268. man who devoted his life to you!"
  269.  
  270.     "It's not true!  I couldn't help Giles!  That thing had clawed his
  271. chest, and there was so much blood all over it and him and everything
  272. and it was too late.  It was too late..."
  273.  
  274.     'And you'd already lost Angel, hadn't you?  Couldn't stand to go
  275. without him again, could you?  Couldn't go through the guilt or the pain
  276. of letting Angel go.  You didn't need Giles as long as you had Angel,
  277. wasn't that it?'
  278.  
  279.     "Too bad Giles wasn't fucking the Slayer, or he might still be
  280. around!"  Xander sneered, the words more accusatory than they had ever
  281. been.
  282.  
  283.     "That's not it..." Buffy cried out desperately.  She searched out
  284. Willow's eyes, looking for understanding, for forgiveness, for something
  285. more than the hate in Xander's.  
  286.  
  287.     The tears in Willow's eyes hid everything else, and Buffy thought that
  288. she'd never see beyond those tears again.
  289.  
  290.     "Who next, Buffy?  Me? Willow?  Who?!"
  291.  
  292.     "It wasn't like that!"
  293.  
  294.     'I just let him die.'
  295.  
  296.  
  297.  
  298.     His arms were wrapped around her, holding her body close to his own. 
  299. She didn't speak, nor move deeper into his embrace.  All that he could
  300. hear was the shallow rasp of her breath.
  301.

  303.  
  304.     "Chose one, Slayer.  Lover or Watcher?"
  305.  
  306.     Her eyes flashed over her bruised and rumpled Watcher, to settle on
  307. Angel.  He was slumped on the floor, the blow delivered to his head
  308. leaving him hovering on the brink of unconsciousness.
  309.  
  310.     She loved him.  She needed him.
  311.  
  312.     Her eyes drifted back to Giles.  The thing's claws were at his neck,
  313. but his eyes were calm behind his shattered glasses.  Something beyond
  314. description passed through his eyes as she met them.  He would not stop
  315. her.  He knew that she needed Angel.  
  316.  
  317.     "Go," he mouthed, his face expressionless, his eyes unreadable.  He
  318. knew.  He always had known.
  319.  
  320.     As her arms wrapped around Angel, hauling him to his feet, the creature
  321. struck, and Giles' blood ran freely.  His body slumped to the ground
  322. covered in his own blood, and he stared after Buffy's retreating back
  323. with wide, glassy eyes.

  327.     Buffy pulled away from Angel, his arms dropping to his side uselessly. 
  328. At his side, yet further away than she had ever been, Buffy curled into
  329. a ball as the tears began to flow once more.
