  28. I was watching School Hard earlier and now I can't get the song "Stupid Thing"
  29. out of my head...I checked my transcript, which lists the band as "Nickel".
  30. The lyrics of the song went:
  31.  
  32. "I did a stupid thing last night
  33. I called you
  34. A moment of weakness
  35. No, not a moment
  36. More like three months of weakness
  37. I'm one step away
  38. From crashing to my knees..."
  39.  
  40. And so on. It was the song they played while Spike watched Buffy from the
  41. shadows, right before he said "There's a guy out there trying to bite
  42. somebody, call the police!" (or something like that, anyway) and I would very
  43. much like to know if anybody knows whether or not I can get this CD, 'cause I
  44. loved it and need the song for a fic I wanna write. Help appreciated, please
  45. reply privately. Thanks!

  73.     "Look Giles - " he tried to interrupt.

  75.     "No.  You look," the Watcher demanded in an authoritative tone,
  76. "Every minute we waste, Buffy will continue to fall into the depths of
  77. grievous danger and those are deeper waters I wish not to tread.  I know
  78. you are angry with her for hurting you, but I also know that you love
  79. her, Xander, and would do anything for her.  That is why I am asking you
  80. to comeàto come and help usàto come and help her."
  81.  
  82.     Xander thought of everything that had occurred in these past
  83. weeks and as angry as he was, as hurt as he was, he had to admit that
  84. what Giles said rang true.  No matter what he was feeling at the moment,
  85. he couldn't deny that he still loved her, even more than he ever did
  86. before.  
  87.  
  88.     With a sigh, he said, "Okay, Giles, count me there tomorrow."
  89.  
  90.     "Well?"  Cordelia said when he hung up the phone, "Is he coming
  91. tomorrow?"
  92.  
  93.     "He's coming," he replied with a satisfied grin.
  94.  
  95.     Cordy gave him a Look, "So, what?  You want an Emmy, now?"
  96.  
  97.     Before Giles could respond, Amy walked through the library doors
  98. carrying a load of books, "Uhàa little help here?"
  99.  
  100.     "Oh, here," Oz said grabbing a stack of books and Giles taking
  101. the other half.
  102.  
  103.     "Thanks," she replied, "Soàwhy did you guys want me to bring all
  104. of these books from my mom's 'collection?'"
  105.  
  106.     "We're going to need your help, Amy," Giles said, "We've done
  107. magic before, but we all lack in the capacity that we *are* magic, and if
  108. we do this counter spell, we must have someone that has some of that
  109. here."
  110.  
  111.     Amy looked at them, "I thought you told me to turn in my magic
  112. apron?"
  113.  
  114.     "Yes, but this is a matter of urgency.  W-we're up against the
  115. Sorcerer, which we found outàWillow?"
  116.  
  117.     The redhead turned to her computer printout and read, "The
  118. Sorcerer, a 17th century vampire with potent magical powers who ran
  119. rampant in the cities of Europe for 50 years.  He was consequently
  120. trapped by his former colleagues, of wizards and witches, in a magical
  121. box that was later tossed into the sea.  In time, it is warned, that the
  122. Sorcerer, weakened by their magic, will regain enough strength to free
  123. himself and roam the countries one more."
  124.  
  125.     "Hold on, I'm only a beginneràI can't deal with this guy!"
  126. insisted Amy with wide eyes, "How am I suppose to - "
  127.  
  128.     "At the moment, we are not dealing with him particularly and I
  129. would never ask you to go up against him, for now, we are attempting to
  130. handle his spell - " Giles tried to explain.
  131.  
  132.     "Which is?"
  133.  
  134.     Cordelia turned to Amy and explained, "This Sorcerer guy put the
  135. love whammy on Buffy to think that she loves Angel."
  136.  
  137.     "Who's Angelàand what's it with you guys and love spells?"
  138.  
  139.     "Second reference, I would kindly like to have some perception in
  140. this supposed fact that we are cursed with love spells?"
  141.  
  142.     "Uhàsorry guys," apologized Amy as she sank back into her chair.
  143.  
  144.     "Giles, Cordelia paid Amy to do this love spell on Xander and it
  145. didn't work," explained Willow.
  146.     
  147.     "But we fixed it," Cordy interjected, "Does that give us any
  148. consideration points?"
  149.  
  150.     "It most certainly does not," Giles replied in more
  151. disappointment than anger, "I have told you all never to mess with magic
  152. for personal foolery.  The consequences can be extremely difficult to
  153. reverse, b-but let's not divulge ourselves into this now, we've got work
  154. to do."
  155.  
  156.     "But I still don't understand what exactly going on." 
  157.  
  158.     "Willow will fill you in on the specifics, while the rest of us
  159. get to work," the Watcher said and she stood up from the computer and sat
  160. down beside Amy.
  161.  
  162.     "I guess the best way to start this would be to tell you that
  163. Buffy's a slayer and there's one in every generationàwellà*was* one in
  164. every generationà"
  165.  
  166. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~
  167.  
  168.     Amy leaned back against her chair with a heavy book on her lap
  169. and looked up at all those who were around her.  Hearing Willow's
  170. explanation - and everyone else's in-between - she could now make sense
  171. out of this group that hung out at the library, not that the sense she
  172. gained was all that comforting.  Vampires, magical vampires, crazy
  173. vampires, demons, werewolvesàand she couldn't help but feel that this
  174. made her witch status not so much of a status anymoreàmore like a norm.
  175.  
  176.     With a sigh, she turned the page of the book and scanned the
  177. pages carefully until she reached to the last spell and her eyes widened
  178. as she read the spell over quickly and she sat up and said,  "This is
  179. itàthis is itàI found ità"
  180.  
  181.      Giles walked over to her and glanced at the spell she was
  182. pointing to and closed the book in his hand and looked closer, "Indeed,
  183. you did."
  184.  
  185.     "Oh, thank God," Cordelia said as she closed the book in front of
  186. her.
  187.  
  188.     "Ditto," Willow said tiredly, as she placed her book on top of
  189. the many stacked on the table, "So, what's the plan?"
  190.  
  191.     "Well, we're going to needà"
  192.  
  193. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~
  194.  
  195.     "You think he's gonna go for it?"  Oz said hesitantly.
  196.  
  197.     "Gonna go for what?"  Xander asked when he entered the library,
  198. all the while, feeling odd to be in the familiar setting.  
  199.  
  200.      "Gonna go for our plan," said Cordy.
  201.  
  202.     "And that plan isà" he prompted as he felt the oddity increase
  203. when he saw that Cordelia and Amy were there.
  204.  
  205.     Giles finished, "That while we initiate the spell, you distract
  206. Buffy."
  207.  
  208.     At that moment, Xander's oddity was replaced by absolute
  209. incredulity, "Whoaàwhoaàyou did not say that this was going to require me
  210. actually having to talk to her."
  211.  
  212.     "And I didn't say that you weren't going to, either, but you said
  213. you'd help, and you are the only one who has a viable enough of a
  214. situation at the moment to - "
  215.  
  216.     "Viable enough of a situation?  Whatàam I going to just call her
  217. up and say, 'Hi, Buff, I'm suppose to distract you while the gang does a
  218. spell, want to talk about our break-up?"
  219.  
  220.     Cordelia scoffed, "I almost forgot how big of dunce you are -
  221. actually, no I haven't - but, hello!  You call her up, tell her you wanna
  222. get all buddy-buddy with her again because you miss that thing you guys
  223. called a friendship."
  224.  
  225.     "T-thank you, Cordelia for your reiteration ofàumàour plan,"
  226. stammered Giles as he turned to Xander, "I can't believe I'm saying this,
  227. but do exactly as she says."
  228.  
  229.     He gave the Watcher a look, "You can't believe you're saying it? 
  230. I can't believe your saying it!  How is this going to help?"
  231.  
  232.     "Part of this spell is made so that she goes away from the person
  233. nearest to her, so that she can be alone, in which the spell will
  234. continue to regenerate.  If you distract her, insist that she stays near
  235. you, and she is strong enough to fight the urge to leaveàfight the painà"
  236.  
  237.     Giles' voice faded from his mind as he thought about Buffy and
  238. what he had told her not too long agoà
  239.  
  240.     à"Xanderàwhat are you - " she began as her eyes looked at him
  241. worriedly.
  242.  
  243.     He smiled and the expression faded with each of his words, "But
  244. there's a stronger part of me still that will do anything to make you
  245. happy, anything to see you smile.  I understand Buffy, and even if I
  246. didn'tàI'll still stand by youà"
  247.  
  248.     àHe had given her that promise and he was very sure that he still
  249. felt that way and so with a sigh, before Giles could finish his
  250. explanation he replied, "Okay, I'll do itàI'll distract her."
  251.  
  252.     The Watcher stopped mid-sentence in surprise and realized that
  253. whatever he had said and whatever he was going to say wasn't really going
  254. to matter to Xander, but rather it was what Xander realized himself that
  255. would make the difference.  Nodding, he smiled, "Good to hear."
  256.

  258.  
  259.     Slowly, Xander ascended the steps of the porch, feeling his heart
  260. beat rapidly in his chest, and he wondered if he had done the better
  261. thing on opting to go to her house as oppose to calling her.  Realizing
  262. it was just a little too late for such contemplation, he took a deep
  263. breath before he rang the Summers' doorbell.
  264.  
  265.     "Xander, it's nice to see you again," Mrs. Summers greeted him
  266. with a kind smile.
  267.  
  268.     "Same here," he replied, "UmàI was wondering if I could talk to
  269. Buffy?"
  270.  
  271.     Her face altered to a rather strained grin on a sympathetic
  272. expression, "Come inàI'll - "
  273.  
  274.     "Xander," Buffy said as she descended the stairs rapidly and
  275. stopped mid-way in surprise of his presence, "Hey."
  276.  
  277.     "Buffy," he said simply.
  278.  
  279.     "I have something in the ovenà" Mrs. Summers quickly excused
  280. herself and walked to the kitchen.
  281.  
  282.     "Iàumàwas wondering if you'd like to take a walkàso that we can
  283. maybe talk?" he asked uneasily.
  284.  
  285.     She nodded, "Yeahàsure," and grabbing her jacket, she called to
  286. her mother, "MomàI'm going to go with Xander for awhile."
  287.  
  288.     "Go ahead, dearàbe back by - never mind, have fun," she replied
  289. when she came out of the kitchen.
  290.  
  291.     Xander knew that this situation was variety of things, but it was
  292. definitely not going to be about fun, and he had a feeling Buffy could
  293. agree with that.  
  294.  
  295. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~
  296.  
  297.     The fire beneath the cauldron flickered and glowed in its
  298. orange-red hue as Giles placed all of the necessary ingredients in it.
  299.  
  300.     "Ishtar, Astarte, Aphroditeàthose of which represent the old
  301. realm of loveàI speak to thee," began Amy.
  302.  
  303. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~
  304.  
  305.     "So, what did you want to talk about?" she asked as they walked
  306. down the sidewalk.
  307.  
  308.     Xander said, "Buffy, I miss you, and that friendship we used to
  309. have and I know that we can't possibly get that back, but I'd like us to
  310. start anewàbe friends again.  Do you think we can do that?"
  311.  
  312.     "YeahàI think we canà"
  313.

  315.  
  316.     "Take from the hexed one they call the Slayeràtake from her the
  317. spell of the Sorcereràbe rid her of the darkness of your powerà"
  318.  
  319.     "Ishtar, Astarte, Aphroditeàwe beckon you," Giles said loudly,
  320. "Lift away this tainted use of your powerà"
  321.

  323.     Buffy froze suddenly and felt her head pounding and Xander felt a
  324. grip on his arm so tight that he felt his bone was going to break,
  325. "Buffyàare you all right?"
  326.  
  327.     "I - I have to goàI just rememberedà" she tried as she turned to
  328. walk back to her house."
  329.

  331.  
  332.     "Free her from his bondage spell of love unsoundàfree her from
  333. your graspàrelinquish her heart and mind to a power she can call her
  334. ownàI ask theeàI seek theeàmake her freeà"
  335.

  337.  
  338.     "No, Buffy, wait," he said taking a hold of her arm, "I wanted to
  339. tell you something before you go."
  340.  
  341.     "Okayàmake it quick," she said as her head continued to grow
  342. tighter with every passing second.
  343.  
  344.     "Iàuhà" Xander tried to think and he finally blurted, "Wanted to
  345. tell you what I decided to try as a careerày'know, just in case that
  346. abundant field of corrections doesn't work out."
  347.  
  348.     "Oh, really?" she said trying her hardest to sound interested,
  349. "And what's that?"
  350.  
  351.     "A writerà"
  352.

  354.  
  355.     "Ishtar, Astarte, Aphroditeàhear our cries and answeràrelease
  356. her!"
  357.

  359.  
  360.     A white cloud lifted from her body and immediately the pain
  361. withdrew it's potency and she collapsed into Xander's arms breathing
  362. heavily.
  363.  
  364.     He held her close as memories of the occurrences of the weeks
  365. prior filled her mind and realization of her actions seized her and he
  366. felt her hot tears wet his T-shirt and the muffled whisper, "Oh my God,
  367. what I have done?"
  368.
