  32. Summary~  A Buffy/Angel story with a few twists.  Involves characters from
  33. General Hospital, but yoiu donÆt have to watch GH to understand this fic.  I
  34. did change a thing or two around for you GH fans

  40. Chapter 4, The Climb

  42. <Step by step I come closer to reaching the top
  43.   Every step must be placed so that I donÆt fall off
  44.   Looking down to see about how much higher I am
  45.   Another cool wind comes through, brushes my skin>
  46.  
  47.     ôStefan!ö  Buffy called.  ôWait up!ö  
  48.     Stefan and Nikolas both stopped and turned to face her.  She looked in a
  49. hurry, and they could tell from the expression that something was up.  Angel
  50. stood behind her, still holding her hand.
  51.     ôSomethingÆs here.  IÆm not sure what but I could feel it.  Even Angel could
  52. feel it.ö  She rushed.
  53.     ôAlright, I must consult my books,ö began Stefan.  Angel and Buffy both
  54. smiled.  ôYou said that you æcould feel itÆ, would yo ucare to elaborate?ö  
  55.     ôIt was evil.  I could sense that evil even after it left.  All I saw was a
  56. black shadow and it was gone.ö  Buffy said.
  57.     Hmmm...maybe she wouldnÆt go back to the Hellmouth as soon as they all
  58. thought.  He left the room and headed for his private library.  Though the
  59. private room in the public library held old books, they were only on rituals.
  60. The books on Spoon Island talked about demons, horrible evils that people
  61. couldnÆt imagine.  Stefan began his search.
  62.  
  63. <The harder I push the tension does grow
  64.   I gather my thoughts the further and further I go
  65.  With some luck I just might keep on climbing
  66.  So better to climb than to face a fall>
  67.  
  68.     Nikolas had never been in a situation like this before.  He was frightened,
  69. but still would help anyway possible. 
  70.      ôIs there anything that I can do?ö  He asked the Slayer.  She nodded
  71. slightly.
  72.     ôI need you to be careful, donÆt go trying to save the world or anything,
  73. ok?ö  Buffy thought that may sound a bit harsh, but needed him to understand.
  74. The lastthing that she wanted was to have to save him on top of killing the
  75. demon.  WouldnÆt it be nice if ths turned out to be nothing?  Right, like
  76. *thatÆs* ever going to happen.  Still, she had Angel, which made her stronger.
  77. She could face this...if only she knew what ôthisö was.

  86.     He hated this, but accepted it.  He had no choice.  He just wished that his
  87. reunion with Buffy could have been demon-free.  SheÆs the Slayer, he knew
  88. better than to hope for that, he had known better than to hope for a reunion
  89. with her at all.  Yet, here he was.  She stood close, helping Stefan look
  90. through books.  He admirred her for focusing on this hellish issue, instead of
  91. him.  He wished he had more of that control, though she was starting to get a
  92. bit bouncy.  Finally, she couldnÆt seem to take it any more.  She stood in
  93. front of him, reaching behind her, she grabbed his arms.  One in each of her
  94. hands.  Then she wrapped them around her and locked his hands together.  She
  95. continued her research.  That was more like his Buffy.
  96.  
  97. <Pulling myself up on a rope I better my view
  98.   The only thing in sight is what I must do
  99.   As I turned I could see myself falling
  100.   Which in return gave me strength for the climb>
  101.  
  102.     ôI found it.ö  Stefan said.  ôArcanus.ö  Angel recognized the name.
  103.     ôArcanus.  Hidden, in latin.  He hides in shadows watching humans.  Then he
  104. possesses whomever he likes most, hidding in their body and causing
  105. destruction.  Not one of the worst demons,ö  Angel assured.
  106.     ôBut he will kill, right?ö  Buffy asked.  Angel nodded, seeing where she was
  107. going.  ôThen he must die.  What else do we know about him?  Where would he go
  108. in this town?ö  Buffy asked, going into Slayer mode.  They would get this.
  109.

  117.     Nikolas had seen Buffy as the determained sort, but not really as a hard
  118. worker.  He was wrong.  Though he could tell she resented her fate, she did
  119. what had to be done.  From what his uncle had told him, she gets it done well.
  120. He felt somewhat helpless, but didnÆt want to get in the way.
  121.     ôWhat happens next?ö  He asked Angel.  
  122.     ôWe develop a theory, then a plan, then carry out the plan.ö  Angel replied. 
  123.     æGee, I couldÆve figured that out.Æ Nik thought.  Well, he answered the
  124. question at least.  Now all they needed were theories and plans.

  127.   I must now prevail with no question
  128.   Have no time to stop
  129.   Onward to the top of the mountain
  130.   And I canÆt turn back now

  135.     Angel was hungry, though he had no taste for blood.  He found that strange,
  136. but ignored it for the moment.  They had more important things to worry about,
  137. like keeping the people of Port Charles safe from a possessing demon.  Oh!
  138.     ôUh, guys...ö

  172.     "Thank you," Mrs. Summers had said to me when I had brought Buffy
  173. back home.  For some weird reason, I couldn't even bring myself to say,
  174. "you're welcome."  If she only knewàif *they* only knewà
  175.  
  176.     That nightàthat night was the night when everything went wrong. 
  177. We were suppose to have the upper handàwe *had* the upper handà or at
  178. least we thought so.  Our planàit seemed so flawlessàit seemed so
  179. perfectàa little too perfect, come to think of it.  That "great" plan was
  180. a total failureàwe didn't succeed even though we did stop Spike and
  181. Druscilla from awaking the century old demon, Roflar, who had enough
  182. power to destroy the world a few times over.  It would have been a
  183. success if we had all gotten out of there without barely a mark, but it
  184. didn't happen.  By saving the world, we lost our livesàeverything we knew
  185. of up until thenàit didn't seem to matter.  Buffy was blindàshe's
  186. blindàshe'll never see againàand it's my entire fault!  But they don't
  187. know that.
  188.  
  189.     "Honk!  Honk!" the car behind me wailed and I noticed that the
  190. light had turned green and pushed on the gas pedal to move aheadàmy
  191. thoughts still spinning in my head.
  192.  
  193.     If only Giles hadn't gotten caught during the planàeverything
  194. could have worked outànot that I blame himàit wasn't his fault.  We came
  195. up with another planàa so-called perfect planàthat somehow ended with
  196. Buffy, Xander, and I fighting Druscilla and Spike.  
  197.  
  198.     Most of the Vamp Troop had been done away with the first time we
  199. were there and only a few were around the mansion.  The leaders of this
  200. depleting demon minion were aloneàAngelus hadn't been aroundàThank God,
  201. who knows what kind of a state Buffy would be in if he had been. 
  202. Druscilla saw us first, she whispered quietly to him, and he stood up
  203. with a smile.
  204.  
  205.     "Wellàwellàlook who's backàBuffy and her bloody Brigade," Spike
  206. had began, but the she interrupted him.
  207.  
  208.     "Stuff it, Spikeàjust give us back, Giles," she said immediately,
  209. not wanting to waste another minute.
  210.  
  211.     He chuckled softly, "You think you scare me, slayer?  Well,
  212. you're wrongàyou're just like the othersàweakàI was sure you were
  213. different, but, um, nopeàI'm not."
  214.  
  215.     "Spike, dear, don't let her take away my new friend," Druscilla
  216. said in an attempt to make Buffy more angry.  It worked.
  217.  
  218.     "Hush, Dru, I could never do thatàdid you remember to feed your
  219. new pet?" he said slyly as he glanced up at her lovinglyàan expression
  220. that surprised me was in capable of him.
  221.  
  222.     I saw her think for a moment and she sighed as she played along,
  223. "I suppose I forgotàahàwellà"
  224.  
  225.     Although it had only been a few hours since he had been captured,
  226. I could imagine him in her demonic handsàstarving to deathàhis thin form
  227. turning to bone and to dust right before my eyes.  If anything had
  228. happened to himàI don't know what any of us would doàhe was the
  229. WatcheràGilesàour Giles.
  230.  
  231.     Then, it happened so quickly, that I couldn't believe it, even
  232. though I saw it happen right in front of my eyes.  Obviously, Spike was
  233. majorly ticking off Buffy, and I saw her clench her fists tightly, but I
  234. saw something he didn't.  She was clenching a stake that she somehow hid
  235. by using her hand and jacket.  My heart had rapidly pounded as approached
  236. her, but its speed probably didn't even close to how fast hers must have
  237. been going. He had just about reached a few feet away from her when she
  238. ran towards him with a stake and the demonolatry sustained body we saw
  239. crumbled into dust at her feet.
  240.  
  241.     Dru went stark raving mad and at first it seemed that she dived
  242. towards Buffy, but really she had wanted to take the dust on the floor
  243. and hold it.  Tears fell down her face as the last remnants of her
  244. boyfriend caked her hands.  We stupidly stood idly byàwatchingàwaiting
  245. when we should have tied her upàkilled her.  If onlyàthat's all I can saw
  246. when I think of thisàif only.  
  247.  
  248.     Suddenly, she screaming, "You killed him!  You killed Spike!" 
  249. Repeatedly, and not just at Buffy, at me and Xander, too, as if we had
  250. all killed him.  She must have thought so because she lunged towards
  251. where Buffy and I stood, throwing Xander against the wall along her way. 
  252. I screamed when I saw him hit the wall, and almost ran towards him to see
  253. if he was okay, but something stopped me before I could.
  254.  
  255.     Druscilla had not been going towards Buffy that nightàshe had
  256. been going towards me!  I think she wanted Buffy to suffer with another
  257. friend deadàlike a friend for a friendàsomething like thatàI don't
  258. knowàI'm not sure I want to know.  I could have diedàI think I would have
  259. died, but Buffy pushed me away and Dru's rage got the better of her as
  260. she clawed at her face and at her eyes like a cat would to a tiny mouse. 
  261. Her screams still ring in my earsàwaking me up at nightàshocking me at
  262. the most impossible moments of the day.  
  263.  
  264.     I've tried to talk to heràto say I'm sorry, but she wouldn't let
  265. meàstopped me the first time I tried to approach her.  Something about it
  266. being her jobàsomething about it being okay, but it wasn't okay.  At
  267. least to me.  I know she feels what's going on around heràthe tension,
  268. the fear, the sadness, and sympathy we all have for her, but she doesn't
  269. see itàshe can't see it because of me.  
  270.  
  271.     She says it okay, but every time I see their faces, I know that
  272. if they knew what she and I knewàthey'd hate me.  More than they all did
  273. beforeàmore than they do nowàXander, maybe most of all.  He loves heràI
  274. know he does.  We all do, but him, maybe most of all.  I'll leave that at
  275. that.  
  276.  
  277.     I don't want them to hate me, and I want to help Buffy in any way
  278. I can, and maybe it would make living day-by-day a little bit easier if I
  279. did.  I'd give her my life if I could had toàafter all, she saved my
  280. lifeàshe's saved us all a hundred times over, and what does she get in
  281. return?  A life in the darkàshades drawn and never to be opened, again.
