  103. Chapter 1, The Power To Believe

  105. <ThereÆs a face here in the mirror
  106.   One I hardly recognize
  107.   The fireÆs burning low
  108.   Behind these tired eyes>
  109.  
  110.     <splash>  The cool water calmed Buffy.  Wiping her face with a towel, she
  111. left the hotel bathroom.  What to do today?  What was there *to* do?  She had
  112. left home almost a month ago.  After traveling across the county on various
  113. leads, she was pretty sure that she had discovered what she was looking
  114. for--the book that would bring Angel back from Hell.
  115.             *        *        *
  116.  
  117.     Normally, she worked at a cute little grill called KellyÆs that seemed to be
  118. the main teen hangout.  But, today was Sunday, the one day that she took off. 
  119.     æAh ha!Æ  She thought as she approached the Port Charles Public Library.
  120.     Once inside, Buffy made her way to the very back of the library, doubting
  121. that demonology books would be in the front.  Looking through a small window
  122. in a storage room door, she was several shelves full of old, dusty books.
  123. This was obviously the place. 
  124.     ôMay I help you?ö  A male voice called from behind her.  She turned to see a
  125. hansome, dark haired man about her age.
  126.     ôHi,ö she began brightly.  ôMy nameÆs Buffy Summers.  I was wondering how to
  127. get into that room.ö  She added a flirty smile, she hoped this works.
  128.     ôNikolas.  My name is Nikolas Cassadine.  That is my uncleÆs private
  129. collection.  Actually, itÆs a bunch of old books filled with nonsense about
  130. demonology and rituals.ö
  131.     ôReally...ö  Buffy said, her voice trailing off.  ôCould I meet your uncle?ö
  132.     For some strange reason, Nikolas trusted this girl.  Buffy Summers...where
  133. had he heard that name before?  ôI--I suppose.ö  He found himself saying.  She
  134. followed himout.

  142.     Buffy was impressed, to say the least.  They had arrived at Nikolas
  143. CassadineÆs home, a large cassle that he calls Wyndemere on itÆs own island,
  144. referred to as Spoon Island.  Nikolas had told her a bit about himself.  He
  145. lives with his uncle, Stefan Cassadine.  He is a prince and heir to the
  146. Cassadine fortune, etc...she had stopped paying much attention about there.
  147.     A man with dark hair, similar to NikolasÆ was reading on the couch.
  148.     ôUncle, this is Buffy Summers.  She...ö  Nikolas was cut off.
  149.     ôBuffy Summers, the one and *only*.ö  Stefan said, as if they had known
  150. eachother for years.  His emphasis on only made Buffy wonder if he some how
  151. knew...ÆNoÆ, she decided.  æThatÆs impossible.Æ
  152.     ôNikolas, do you recall the book you read about Vampire Slayer?ö  Stefan
  153. asked.  Nikolas nodded.  Buffy was stunned.
  154.     ôPlease sit down.  So tell me, Miss Summers, what are you doing so far from
  155. the Hellmouth?ö
  156.     ôEx-excuse me, sir?ö  Suffy studdered.
  157.     ôUncle?ö  
  158.     ôIÆm looking for a book...a book on how to return a person from Hell.ö  Buffy
  159. said.  It was obvious that this man knew what he was talkign about.  Why
  160. pretend to be clueless?  This may even make things easier.  ôAngel, my
  161. boyfriend, recently reverted to his former self, Angelus...ö  This would be a
  162. long story.
  163.             *        *        *
  164.  
  165.     NikolasÆ head was spinning after the tale that Buffy had just told, but he
  166. knew it was true.  Apparently, his uncle knew a man named Rupert Giles, whom
  167. was referred to as a Watcher.  *This* could turn out to be very interesting.

  175.     Buffy awoke suddenly.  Something was coming.  After checking out of her hotel
  176. room and moving into one of the many spare rooms at Wyndemere she had gone on
  177. patrol.  To her great suprise, she had run into three vampires.  All of which
  178. were now dust.     
  179.     Buffy could feel the evil in the air.  Maybe she was here for reasons other
  180. than Angel.  æI sound like Giles,Æ she thought with a smirk.  Giles.  Was he
  181. worried?  Stefan had said to make herself at home.  Did that include using the
  182. phone?  She dialed her number.
  183.     <...and where you can be reached.  beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep>
  184.     ôHi.  ItÆs Buffy.  I just wanted you to know that IÆm ok.  As soon as IÆm
  185. done here, IÆll come home.  Please get this message to Giles, Willow, Xander,
  186. Cory, and Oz as soon as possible.  Goodbye, mom.  And...try not to worry.ö
  187. Whew.  She hung up the phone.

  196.     Buffy let out a breath that she hadnÆt realized she was holding as Stefan
  197. opened the private library room door.  Stefan then walked to a shelf on the
  198. right side of the room.  After looking at the rack of books briefly, he pulled
  199. one out and flipped through it.  Without hesitation, he handed it to Buffy.
  200. Tears welled in her eyes as she read the page.
  201.     ôTonight,ö  Stefan assured her.

  209.     Some people in the small harbr town of Port Charles found the Cassadine home
  210. somewhat creepy.  Nikolas had never agreed, until now.  Though he would never
  211. admitt it, the dim lights, candles, herbs, and soft chanting was giving him
  212. the creeps.
  213.     He once again focused his attention on the task at hand.  In the circle of
  214. candles, the three were performing the ritual.  One that woud hopefully heal
  215. the broken slayer.

  222.     Buffy and a single candle stood in the center of the circle, with Stefan to
  223. the right and Nikolas to the left.  She was softly chanting.
  224.     ô...and I shall bring ye forth to once again walk amoung the rightous
  225. living.ö  As she finished, she poked her left ring finger with a needle and
  226. let the blood drip onto the candle in front of her, putting it out.

  233.     They stared in awe as the vortex formed.  A dark figure appeared.  He slowly
  234. staggered out just before the vortex closed.

  262. Charlotte Sometimes (Part 43)
  263.  
  264.     "Drusilla? Babe? You alive?" Ian asked as he walked around her,
  265. checking out the burns and scratches. Nothing bleed to death deep..
  266. She'd be alright.
  267.  
  268.     Drusilla rolled onto her back looking up at the exotic features of this
  269. new man...
  270.     Fear jetted though her.. She didn't like this man, he was dark, very
  271. untrusting. Everything about him screamed evil.  
  272.     She managed to get into a sitting position and scramble backwards until
  273. her back slammed against the wall. She looked towards the face again
  274. shocked to see stars and blurs.
  275. Drusilla's head feel between her bent knee's as she cried, trying to
  276. cover her face with her hands. 
  277.  
  278.     "Great," Ian mumbled "well, there had to be a reason he dumped her with
  279. me"
  280.     He sighed, wishing he had a little help here.
  281.     "Dru?" He asked again.     
  282.     Her head snapped up, vision coming back better now as she got a good
  283. look at him. 
  284.     He smiled, wondering if she was as innocent as she looked. "You're
  285. gonna be stayin' here for a while." 
  286.     She frowned. "I need to go. Go find Lydia." Ian knelt down next to her,
  287. and Drusilla whispered "She's alone" 
  288.     He nodded, looking the confused girl. "Yah. You *need* to rest." He
  289. laughed "C'mon, you can stay in my room," 
  290. Ian stood holding out his hand, but as suspected she looked down.
  291. Afraid. 
  292.     "It's gotta bed" he smiled. 
  293.     Ian envisioned her busting with tears any minute "Are you going to hurt
  294. me."
  295.     "Nah, got pretty strict orders on that"
  296.     Drusilla smiled and laid her hand in his. 
  297.     "My names --"
  298.     "Ian," Drusilla smiled "My savior..."

  345.     Nikolas saw the tears running down BuffyÆs cheek.  He wanted to reach out to
  346. her, to help her.  Seeing the small smile on her face he realized that he just
  347. had.

  353.     ôIÆm sorry.  IÆm so sorry.ö  Buffy began to cry.  Angel moved toward her,
  354. shaking his head.
  355.     ôIÆm so proud of you, thereÆs nothing to be sorry for,ö  Angel said gently.
  356.     ôA...ö  Angel cut her off with a kiss.

  366.     æPerhaps the slayer could now return to the Hellmouth where she is needed.Æ
  367. Stefan thought.  She truely looks happy.  He couldnÆt remember the last time
  368. that he had been that happy himself.
  369.     He looked over at Nikolas.  The boy was watching the reunion intently.
  370. Several emotions played on his eyes.  His face remained vacant, no emotion
  371. visible.  ThatÆs the Cassadine way.  Stefan had been taught to hide his
  372. feelings, as had his father and grandfather, and now Nikolas.  He resented it,
  373. but knew that Nikolas was a good person dispite his Cassadine upbringing.  He
  374. had always known that.
  375.  
  376. <Our destiny rides
  377.   One every throw of the dice
  378.   Even when we loose

  380.   Just hold me close

  382.   HereÆs where it all begins>

  384.     A black figure watched as Nikolas and Stefan left the room, giving Buffy and
  385. Angel some privacy.  He looked at his surroundings.  æThis was no Hellmouth,
  386. but it would do nicely.Æ  He smiled wickedly and began to silently look for an
  387. exit.  He kept to the shadows, but was sure that the slayer was too busy to
  388. notice him.
  389.

  395.     Nikolas followed Stefan out.  æShe looks so happy.Æ  He was jealous.  He
  396. would never act on that jealousy as long as she was happy.  As long as he
  397. helped make her happy in some small way.  Angel was lucky to have her.  Nik
  398. just hoped that he was able to see that.  Having Angel back meant that Buffy
  399. would have to go back too.  Maybe a little trip to the Hellmouth someday would
  400. do him some good.  He wondered where the hellmouth was locatedas he finally
  401. left the room.

  407.     BuffyÆs happy smile faded.  Something was wrong.
  408.     ôBuff?ö  Angel asked, growing concerned.  She put a finger to his lips and
  409. closed her eyes.  He had a vage memory of her doing this befoer.  She was
  410. focusing on something he silently guessed.  Angel did the same, though he
  411. lacked the SlayerÆs abilities.  He sensed it too.  Evil.  Suddenly, it was
  412. gone, but itÆs presence still lingered in the air.  Buffy opened her eyes and
  413. looked at him.
  414.     ôLooks like was have business to take care of before we go home,ö she said
  415. and gave him a kiss before pulling him out the door of the ballroom to find
  416. Stefan.  He was the closest thing she had to a watcher here.

  436. from the musical "Nine"
  437. Summary: Buffy is wandering somewhere, lost in her thoughts.
  438.  
  439. The bus arrived just before dawn.  She got off immediately and began 
  440. wandering, aimlessly through the city.  Buy about 11am, she had found 
  441. her way over to a large park near the center of town.  She followed the 
  442. sounds of clapping until she reached a small, open-air theater.  A sign 
  443. on a post read "free concert."
  444.  
  445. As Buffy watched from the top of the amphetheater seating, she saw one 
  446. woman accending the stage as another was leaving.  The new performer 
  447. waited for the the applause to stop.  As it did, a slow, almost haunting 
  448. melody welled up from behind her.  And she sang:
  449.  
  450.                         "In a very unusual way
  451.                         One time I needed you
  452.                         In a very unusual way
  453.                         You were my friend
  454.                             Maybe it lasted a day
  455.                             Maybe it lasted an hour
  456.                             But somehow it will never end"
  457.  
  458. Buffy started as she listened.  The lyrics struck a painful cord deep 
  459. within her, bringing a tear to her eye.  She couldn't listen to this.  
  460. Not right now.  She turned to walk away, but the music seemed to follow 
  461. her.
  462.  
  463.                         "In a very unusual way
  464.                 I think I'm in love with you
  465.                 In a very unusual way
  466.                 I want to cry
  467.                     Something inside me goes weak
  468.                     Something inside me surrenders

  471. She started walking faster.   Buffy wasn't exactly sure what drove her 
  472. away.  All she knew that the words of the song continued to follow her 
  473. relentlessly, and that she had to get away from them.
  474.

  476.                 You don't have a clue
  477.                 You don't know what it's like to be me looking at you
  478.                 It scares me so that I can hardly speak
  479.  
  480. As Buffy continued to walk faster, away from the the song, she came to a 
  481. small maze of hedges.  She walked in, turning this way and that.  As she 
  482. did, she noticed that, while the music stayed with her, the haunting 
  483. sense that it had given her lessened.

  486.                         I owe what I am to you
  487.                         Though at times it appears I won't stay
  488.                         I'll never go
  489.                             Special to me in my life
  490.                             Since the first day that I met you
  491.                             How could I ever forget you

  494. Then, as she came to the center of the maze, she stopped dead in her 
  495. tracks.  And she knew.  It was staring her right in the face.  She 
  496. walked towards the figure in the center of the maze and, as she did, the 
  497. end of the song seemed to echo off the figure.  She sat down at the base 
  498. of the statue and cried.
  499.  
  500.                         "In a very unusual way
  501.                         You've made me whole"
  502.  
  503. She woke up an hour later.  It had to have been a dream.  Then she 
  504. looked up and remembered what had happened.  As Buffy wiped the dried 
  505. tears from her face, she looked up into the face of the stone angel 
  506. smiling down at her, she saw him, her Angel getting sucked into that 
  507. demon again.  And she saw a part of herself being sucked in as well.

  569. what she had said...that she needed her...

  583. please come back.  I can hardly remember what your voice sounds like.  I miss
  584. your laugh and your strange way of making everything seem better than it
  585. really is...ö  her voice trailed off as her tears fell.  
  586.     WillowÆs moment was ruined by the ring of the phone.  ôHello?ö.... ôIÆll be
  587. right overö she said into the phone.

  599.     It took him three weeks to fully realize what he had done by not warning
  600. Buffy that they were trying to recurse Angel.  He knew Willow blamed herslf,
  601. but he also knew that he was the one to blame.  HeÆd do anything to take what
  602. he did back.  He was a coward, and now he couldnÆt even admitt to anyone that
  603. he had lied to Buffy.  The phone rang... ôWhat?ö  he snapped.  ôOn my way...ö

  617.     He had never let himself think about what would happen if he lost Buffy.  He
  618. had never let himself admitt how much she meant to him.  But now, all he would
  619. let himself do is search.  It was useless, he knew that.  She was the Slayer,
  620. if she wanted to remain hidden then he knew that she would.  An annoying
  621. ringing broke his thoughts.  He considered disconnecting the phone..but what
  622. if it was Buffy?  
  623.     ôYes?ö  ôI-IÆll be over there shortly.ö

  626.     They were all assembled.  Xander, Cordy, Willow, Oz, and Giles, just as Buffy
  627. had asked.  Once they were situated, she got up to address the group.
  628.     ôThank you all for coming.  Last night, I received a message from Buffy.  She
  629. said that she wanted you to hear it and I thought you all might want to...ö
  630. She stopped, seeing the anxious looks on everyoneÆs face.
  631.     ôæHi.  ItÆs Buffy.  I just wanted you to know that IÆm ok.  As soon as IÆm
  632. done here, IÆll come home.  Please get this message to Giles, Willow, Xander,
  633. Cory, and Oz as soon as possible.  Goodbye, mom.  And...try not to worry.Æö

  635.     Everyone felt relieved that she was ok, but now more than ever wanted her
