Hola Ken,
Sorry for the delay...4 months.
It is a bamboo which grows in Hawaii called Shizosthachium or something like
this. Richard Waters had mentioned it at the bamboonet a year ago or so. It
is yellow when fresh and it has a very thin wall.
By the way, I┤m doing the difficult job to identify positivelly the Bolivian
bamboo called songo or chussi. I hope that I would publish this at the
American Bamboo Society Newsletter, but it will demand time. Here in Buenos
Aires, a botanical institute is making the anatomical observations and
electron microscope images to compare this bamboo with other registers.
I can't believe, but nobody until now tried to clasify the traditional
bamboos used for woodwinds in Los Andes. The few material about this has
been written either by taxonomists which nothing know about instruments, or
by musicologists which consider that all bamboos are the same.
Anybody knows anything more?

Hi List
Does anyone know of a source for Songo cane?
There is an Indonesian bamboo with nodes over a meter long
very thin wall, an excellent substitute for songo. I don't know
the species name or reliable source. Anyone know of this bamboo?

Hi Angel
Thanks for this info, I=27ll see if I can find some Shizosthachium.
The main reason I have not yet used bamboos for malta and
bigger sikus is that to buy enough culms is very expensive in
Australia. I can sell a good malta for around =2450 A but it costs
that much just for the bamboo. The only viable alternatives are
to grow the bamboo or use alternate materials.
After the guys from Walisuma player my PVC malta so well I=27ve
been practicing on those difficult base notes and am certainly
improving. I got a spot at the local international group on
Saturday, hope it goes well=21
I also am amazed that Songo seem not yet scientifically described.
By for now.
