1) "Is China a Military Threat?" - June 16 on "Defense Monitor"
From: owner-weekly@cdi.org
The United States put China back into the strategic war plan last year,
after a hiatus of two decades. Now the two countries view each other as
potential nuclear adversaries. How did we arrive at this juncture and are
we headed toward a nuclear show-down? Airs in Washington, DC on Sunday, June
11 at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 32. Airs in NYC on Friday, June 16 on Channel 25 at
7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, June 17 at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 13. WEBSITE:
http://www.cdi.org/adm/1340. E-mail adminfo@cdi.org with "subscribe" in the
subject line for updates on new videos.
2) Tell your friends: July 4th, 6 pm - Peace Play to be performed outside the
White House. The play A CLOWN, A HAMMER, A BOMB, AND GOD, a play about nuclear
weapons and the Plowshares Movement, is set to be performed on July 4
(Independence Day) in Lafayette Park (across from the White House), in
Washington, DC. Show time is scheduled at 6 PM. The Performance is in support
of the Fellowship of Reconciliation's People's Campaign for Nonviolence--40
days of nonviolent resistance in Washington that will begin on July 1 and end
on August 9. For more information, visit the FOR website at
http://www.forusa.org. The play will be part of a peace vigil at Lafayette Park
undertaken by the Pacifist groups Nevada Desert Experience and Pace E Bene.

4) Art Work from NPT needs a home
On the second day of the NPT, Abolition 2000 and Earth Day-NY co-sponsored a
moving street demonstration across the street from the UN with Hibakusha,
downwinders, indigenous leaders and other outstanding spokespeople in our
movement to end the devastation wrought by more than 50 years of toxic nuclear
terror. My organization, GRACE, commissioned a sculpture, described below,
forwhich we collected names from all over the world to be incorporated in the
art work as a testament to the suffering caused by nuclear mining, milling,
power, weapons, and waste. The Japanese crane, covered with feathers that
contain the names of 1,000 people who were harmed by the nuclear age is
temporarilly displayed at the Church Center at 777 UN Plaza, a non-profit
office building
for many NGOs. But we need to find it a permanent home. If you know of a
museum, school, place of worship, or other public place (it needs to be
displayed indoors), please send me an email at aslater@gracelinks.org, and
we'll try to arrange to send it to you. Many thanks. Alice Slater

5) Pentagon Has Been Rigging Antimissile Tests, Critics Maintain
http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/060900sci-missile-defense.html
June 9, 2000, By WILLIAM J. BROAD, New York Times
Citing the Pentagon's own plan, critics of the proposed antimissile
defense and even some military experts say all flight tests of the $60
billion weapon have been rigged to hide a fundamental flaw: The system
cannot distinguish between enemy warheads and decoys.
In interviews, they said that after the system failed to achieve this
crucial discrimination goal against mock targets in its first two flight
tests, the Pentagon substituted simpler and fewer decoys that would be
easier for the antimissile weapon to recognize.....
8) A HISTORY OF SECRET HUMAN EXPERIMENTATION
http://www.healthnewsnet.com/humanexperiments.html
1931 Dr. Cornelius Rhoads, under the auspices of the Rockefeller
Institute for Medical Investigations, infects human subjects with
cancer cells. He later goes on to establish the U.S. Army
Biological Warfare facilities in Maryland, Utah, and Panama, and
is named to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. While there, he
begins a series of radiation exposure experiments on American
soldiers and civilian hospital patients.

8) Please start sending news articles to NucNews@onelist.com.
Please send news articles, editorials, and other information to
NucNews@onelist.com (mailto:NucNews@onelist.com) - include URL, title,
date, and
publication, please! Also, please post ONLY articles, official reports, etc.,
and reserve discussion for other groups (such as downwinders@onelist.com).
Your messages will be archived at http://www.onelist.com/archive/NucNews. I am
about to spend some weeks largely away from the computer, and hope to set up an
automatic system whereby we can collect all find these articles again in the
future, with a minimum of labor for us all. NucNews Archives at
http://prop1.org/nucnews/briefslv.htm will still be posted occasionally,
but I'm
hoping the new system will end up supplanting the old. If you have any trouble
getting into http://www.onelist.com/archive/NucNews please let me know and I'll
fix the subscription, or you can subscribe yourself easily. At this point
you're subscribed to send only, with access to the website. That can easily be
changed if you want to receive (probably quite a few) messages from other
people also posting to NucNews@onelist.com. As you know, NucNews collects
information about nuclear, plutonium, uranium, radioactive, missiles, arms
sales, alternative energy, military conversion, and police-state misconduct.
Announcements can continue to come to prop1@prop1.org, for the morning
bulletins.
Thanks!
Ellen Thomas

hi alice,
sorry we missed the action, we were in the middle east, "transforming
armageddon" We could find a place in ann arbor to exhibit the
sculpture. Also, these is the swords into plowsheres peace museum in
Detroit, and also the peace museum in Chicago, and indeed a network of
peace museums around the world. Especially we would be interested in
bringing the sculpture to Megiddo next spring, April 22, and
subsequently for an art for peace exhibit as part of the megiddo peace
project. do you have a picture? does the sculpture have a crate for
shipping?
what is happening with the us campaign? Were there minutes from the
meeting at your house and the following Friday in April? What happened?
I haven't seen any message on my e-mail--of the 880+- waiting when we
got back, or subsequently. particularly i am interested in the
"bottom-up" strategy discussion. Any prospective staff? Are there plans
for a July 16, Trinity Day" action in DC aspart of the FOR 40days? We,
unfortunately (though happily) will be on the west coast then. odile is
working on the wilpf/women in black actions on August 1.
best wishes, alan 734 761-7967
