Subject: (abolition-usa) Fwd: [manhattangreens] Nader in Missoula
Dear Friends,
For my contribution to the US Abolition Campaign, I'm working for Ralph
Nader's
election. He has the Star Wars material and I expect to see him speaking=
out
about that. Hope you will check out www.votenader.com and volunteer, send
money, get involved. (I think the money is important--he's not taking
corporate contributions. Imagine if 1,000,000 people sent him $10 each!!)=
=20
With Gore willing to trash the ABM treaty together with Bush, we'll never=
get
rid of nuclear weapons unless we make a real strong showing for Nader. If=
the
Greens get 5% of the vote (and he's committed to running a vital campaign in
all 50 states) there will be public financing for the next election--just=
like
Ross Perot's Reform Party, and our issues will be on the public agenda. =
Even
now, he and Buchanan are trying to get in on the Gush-Bore debates. Hope
you'll
take action right away!! Peace, Alice Slater

Subject: (abolition-usa) Art Work from NPT needs a home
- --=====================_429562197==_
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Dear Friends,
On the second day of the NPT, Abolition 2000 and Earth Day-NY co-sponsored a
moving street demonstration across the street from the UN with Hibakusha,
downwinders, indigenous leaders and other outstanding spokespeople in our
movement to end the devastation wrought by more than 50 years of toxic nuclear
terror. My organization, GRACE, commissioned a sculpture, described below,
for
which we collected names from all over the world to be incorporated in the art
work as a testament to the suffering caused by nuclear mining, milling, power,
weapons, and waste. The Japanese crane, covered with feathers that contain
the
names of 1,000 people who were harmed by the nuclear age is temporarilly
displayed at the Church Center at 777 UN Plaza, a non-profit office building
for many NGOs. But we need to find it a permanent home. If you know of a
museum, school, place of worship, or other public place (it needs to be
displayed indoors), please send me an email at aslater@gracelinks.org, and
we'll try to arrange to send it to you. Many thanks. Alice Slater
Marjorie K. Kouns Statement and
Biography
Eostre-Goddess of Spring pays homage to the thousands of victims who have been
exposed to toxic radiation from the 1940s to the present. It was commissioned
by Global Resource Action Center for the Environment in order to highlight the
immense suffering that has been caused worldwide on account of nuclear mining,
milling, testing and production.
Eostre-Goddess of Spring is shaped like a Japanese peace crane. It is 7 1/2
feet tall, and is covered with 1,000 names of radiation victims replicated in
the shape of feathers, each one tied on by hand. The neck of Eostre has black
colored 'feathers' covered with select photos of victims.
The work represents Spring and renewal; from death and mourning, to life and
celebration. My intention is to offer a moment of reflection for viewers to
acknowledge those that have been lost or hurt, and also to offer a glimpse
into
how they could, moreover should, fly free just like this crane. With the
shadow of nuclear weapons development still looming over us, can we as a
society live freely knowing the uncertainty of these actions? The question
remains.
Marjorie Kouns is a New York based artist whose current work focuses on how we
see what we see as well as concepts and materials of impermanence. Kouns was
the 95-96 Artist-in-Residence with Art Culture & Technology (ACT), formerly a
division of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation. Through ACT, Kouns exhibited
ôMade by Hand/Yong Shouö, at the UN 4th World Conference on Women, Beijing,
1995. This work became a series which traveled to Hong Kong for the Fringe
Festival in January 1996, to Istanbul for the UN Habitat II Conference in
Istanbul in June, and finally back to New York in September 1996 to the United
Nations, Borough of Manhattan Community College and New York Technical College
in Brooklyn.
In March 1996, Kouns was a panelist on ôLook at the World through Women's Eyes
(Global Focus)ö, held at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in
Washington, D.C., highlighting the Beijing Women's Conference. While working
in Paris (1984-5), she lectured in conjunction with the American Participation
Program, United States Information Service (USIS) and in August, 1997 returned
to Europe for her first solo show; part of the USIS exhibition series at
Amerika Haus/Berlin. In September 1997, Kouns was commissioned by the Mothers
Centers, (based in Germany, with over 400 centers worldwide) to present
ôSatellite Mural Projectö where three murals were painted in collaboration
with
the children and parents of each center in Stuttgart, Hamburg and Munich.
Kouns has a permanent public art installation æSarkahc NevesÆ on view in Times
Square/NYC. In January 2000, she presented Fugitive Data (an installation
composed of 600 tiled computer diskettes) at P.S. 122 Gallery. Between 1992
and 1998, she was part of the annual 'Art Around the Park' at Tompkins
Square-East Village, an invitational mural painting event, and was a also a
1983 recipient of NYC's Materials for the Arts Program (Department of Cultural
Affairs) in collaboration with poet Andrew Scharf.
