Dear Tracy Moavero,
In terms of Indians, you might want to be in touch with either Zia Mian at
Princeton zia@Princeton.EDU or Abha Sur at M.I.T. asur@MIT.EDU. They are
both Pakistani, but work closely with Indian abolitionists in the U.S. and
internationally. In terms of Pacific island people, you might want to see
who Richard Salvador of Belau (now in Hawaii) would recommend.
salvador@hawaii.edu. There are relatively cheap flights from Hawaii, which
might lead you to want to invite him.
With best wishes,

Subject: Re: (abolition-usa) Nuking Serbia
Is this some sort of sick joke? How can anyone raise this question seriously?
It is an outrageous, disgusting idea and should be promptly identified as such.
First, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, would die. Second, millions
more would be injured, and many of them would suffer painful deaths. Third,
vast tracts of land would be uninhabitable. Why are we even talking about this?
If anyone uses nuclear weapons in Serbia, the political/military/environmental
situation in the world will change in drastic, unforseeable ways. My guess is
that both the NPT and the ABM treaty would collapse
Further, today's anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster should remind us that
nuclear fallout knows no boundaries. Winds will blow where they will, carrying
nuclear contamination to other countries.
Shalom,

Kosovo and NATO: Alice, Giovanni and Nelly reported on the NATO demonstration
and meeting in Washington last week which was carried by C-Span in its
entirety
and re-broadcast that evening. After discussion about how misinformed the
public and even our members of Congress are on this issue, we decided to write
a simple fact sheet about events leading up to the bombing of Kosovo to
educate
people on why it is wrong for NATO to be raining destruction down on
Yugoslavia. Peggy and Nelly will draft the fact sheet.
Women in Black demonstrate every Wednesday against the Kosovo bombing at 5:30
at the NY Public Library, 5th Ave. and 42nd St. Spread the word and join
them!
NPT PrepCom: May 10th to 23rd. IT IS URGENT THAT WE HAVE A GOOD TURN OUT AT

ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE PREPCOM, MONDAY MAY 10TH, THERE WILL BE AN ABOLITION
CAUCUS AT 8:00 AM, CHURCH CENTER, 777 UN PLAZA, 7TH FLOOR. PLEASE MAKE EVERY
EFFORT TO ATTEND ON TIME AT 8:00 AM!!
Selma Brackman has assembled the devastating photos we have been collecting
for
ôThe Toxic Legacy of the Nuclear Ageö showing the suffering by people from 50
years of nuclear mining, weapons production and testing, and civilian power,
from all over the world. She is publishing them with explanations in a
pamphlet for distribution to the delegates and to NGOs. Selma is still
trying
to get sponsorship, through the World Health Organization to display the
photos
on the wall outside the delegates meeting room. (We need an organ of the
UN to
sponsor the exhibit, according to their rules. The UN Commission on
Disarmament
turned down our request to sponsor the exhibit during the NPT, although they
may help us during the fall's Disarmament Week.) WE WILL ALSO BLOW THE PHOTOS
UP INTO POSTERS MOUNTED ON POSTERBOARD TO BE CARRIED BY 12-15 VOLUNTEERS
OUTSIDE THE UN AND WHEREVER ELSE WE CAN BE NOTICED. THIS ACTION WILL BE
DISCUSSED AT THE 8:00 AM CAUCUS ON MONDAY MAY 11TH, SO PLEASE TRY TO BE THERE

inquire if we need a police permit to walk outside with the posters. Chris
Nye
of the War Resisters League may be able to help in this matter.
Y2K SYMPOSIUM, NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND NUCLEAR POWER: Tuesday, May 11th , 1:00 to
3:00 pm, Conference Room 4, UN
A panel has been organized by Helen Caldicott of STAR (Standing for Truth

who chairs Y2K efforts at the UN, and have acceptances from Michio Kaku, Mary
Olson(NIRS) Michael Craig (BASIC), and David Lochbaum (Union of Concerned
Scientists). Please try to attend this event and invite members of your
organization to come as well. You will need a UN pass, so call the UN NGO
Committee on Disarmament, 212-687-5340 to be put on a list.
Talking Points to Delegates: See enclosed letter from our Working Group to NPT
delegates, dated April 20, 1999, for talking points to the delegates when you
come to the NPT. (Calling for intersessional working group, de-alerting, and
greater NGO participation and access at NPT meetings.)
Because of the importance of having good attendance at the NPT by NGOs, the
participants at the meeting volunteered to split the Abolition 2000 NY Working
Group and call all the organizations on the list to remind them to bring lots
of people to the NPT, abolition caucus, and Y2k symposium.
WOOLSEY/MARKEY RESOLUTIONS: Please call your representative and ask that they

Food Irradiation: Congress has passed a law directing the FDA to review
whether
we still need labeling requirements for irradiated food. The FDA is to
consider removing the radiation warning on packages, or re-naming it ôcold
pasteurizationö or ôelectronic pasteurizationö so as not to alarm people who
stay away from irradiated food. . If food irradiation is made more
ôpalatableö
there will be a whole new source of nuclear waste to poison America as
thousands of radiation plants are built across the country, operated with
deadly cesium and cobalt-60.
WRITE A LETTER TO THE FDA DEMANDING PROMINENT USE OF THE TERMS
ôIRRADIATIONö OR
ôIRRADIATEDö AND THE USE OF THE RADURA SYMBOL.

Write your letter to the FDA before May 18th when the comment period on the
new

FDA
is not now doing. LetÆs nip this thing in the bud before we have a whole new
nuclear waste problem to deal with!! For more details, see www.purefood.org
Philadelphia Project: Gloria Lawrence sent in an extended list of influential
New Yorkers to invite to a city dialogue on nuclear policy. It was suggested

Dear Joseph,
Thanks for the tips on speakers for New Mexico. I've been in touch with Zia and
Ramana, but I'll try Richard too.
For the Hague Appeal I've been told that you are organizing a workshop with
indigenous activists. Is that true? Could I have more information? We have a
Native American woman from New Mexico going with our delegation.
Thanks,
Tracy Moavero

I was not advocating the nuking of Serbia, merely reporting that my brother
favors nuking Serbia and asking what the consequences would be and if the
people on this list knew anyone else who favored nuking Serbia.

Dear Tracey,
This note will be quick. I can fill in with more information if it will be
helpful to you.
We have organized (in conjuction with Japanese organizations) a "Global
Hibakusha Delegation." It includes Dorothy Purley and Carletta Garcia of
the Laguna-Acoma Coalition in New Mexico, Norio Kebenli from Rongelap Atoll
in the Marshall Islands, and Gabriel Tetiarahi from Tahiti. The delegation
also includes a number of non-indigenous people: two Utah down winders, an
atomic vet from Arizona, a nuclear weapons victim from Kazakhstan, a Korean
Hiroshima Hibakusha and four Japanese Hiroshima and Nagasaki Hibakusha.
We have global forum sessions set for the 12th and 13th and a core agenda
session mid-afternoon on the 13th. Because time will be so limited in the
core agenda session, we are structuring the global focus sessions to allow
other nuclear weapons victim/activists speak (about 7 minutes each will be
max for statements), network, and engage in the Q&A.
When I can catch my breath I will post times and places on the abolition
caucus list serve.
Hope that does it, and I look forward to meeting you and people traveling
with you there.
Best
Joseph Gerson
