  10. The first French move against Berlin had been defeated at Gross Beeren on 23 August. Napoleon resolved to try again and 
  11. planned to lead the attack himself. However, Vandamme's catastrophe at Kulm forced him to remain at Dresden and instead 
  12. you have been put in command of the Army of Berlin. On September 3 you have set out from Wittenberg with the corps of 
  13. Bertrand, Reynier and Oudinot. Facing you were the Prussian 3rd and 4th corps, with the remainder of the Allied Army of 
  14. the North (under Bernadotte) in support.

  16. There has been a brief skirmish with Tauentzien (4th corps) at Zahna on the 5th but you was able to continue his advance.
  17. Today your advance is blocked once more by Tauentzien deployed near Dennewitz and Juterbogk, with Bulow's 3rd corps 
  18. moving up in support. The three French corps had advanced in individual columns and the intervals between them had become
  19. dangerously wide. Undaunted you have ordered your leading corps (Bertrand's 4th corps) into the attack.
