  13. The first French move against Berlin had been defeated at Gross Beeren on 23 August. Napoleon resolved to try again and 
  14. planned to lead the attack himself. However, Vandamme's catastrophe at Kulm forced him to remain at Dresden and instead 
  15. ney has been put in command of the Army of Berlin. On September 3 Ney has set out from Wittenberg with the corps of 
  16. Bertrand, Reynier and Oudinot. Facing him were the Prussian 3rd and 4th corps, with the remainder of the Allied Army of 
  17. the North (under Bernadotte) in support.

  19. There has been a brief skirmish with Tauentzien (4th corps) at Zahna on the 5th but the frenchs were able to continue 
  20. their advance. Today Tauentzien has deployed near Dennewitz and Juterbogk to block again the french move. Your 3rd corps 
  21. is moving up in support. The three French corps had advanced in individual columns and the intervals between them had 
  22. become dangerously wide. Undaunted Ney seems to have ordered his leading corps (Bertrand's 4th corps) into the attack.
