#titre1
Dennewitz - September-6 1813
Epilog
#normal
Dennewitz saw some of the bitterest fighting of the campaign, some of the most intense being between 'Germans'
(the Saxons under Reynier at Gohlsdorf against Borstell was especially savage). Throughout the day the dominant
villages and heights changed hands several times as both sides attacked and counterattacked. As ever Ney was at
the forefront of the battle but the French forces lacked overall direction. Bulow led his corps with distinction
and eventually prevailed, partly due to the failure of French command control. The French were forced to retreat
and under Allied pressure this withdrawal became something of a rout. Ney fell back on Torgau and was perhaps
fortunate not to suffer a devastating defeat similar to the one suffered by Vandamme at Kulm.
Dennewitz effectively marked the end of the last French offensive in Germany. From now on the Allies would have
the initiative and dictate where the battles would be fought.
