COMMENT:Discusses an assortment of paranormal experiences and some of the peculiarities of the human nervous system which may contribute to them. Topics include channeling, UFO reports, contagious behavior, meditation, prophecy, and out of body experiences. The approach is open-minded, to the extent of going too far. For example, claims of abilities to hear microwaves, or that some have hearing so sensitive that they can hear the subvocalized motion of the vocal cords which normally accompany thought (in effect hearing others thinking), are accepted uncritically. Aside from this, the book provides a unique, and very useful, approach to the investigation of extraordinary claims. In particular, the chapters on physiological and conditioning effects in transcendental experience are excellent.
