††Rails are parallel continuous lines of bars laid on the ground, usually to form a railway track. Railways date back 4,000 years to the Babylonians, who pushed carts along grooves. The first rails were made of wood and appeared in 1602. They were used in mines to make moving the heavy coal carts easier. More durable cast iron rails were first made in 1763.
