††A railway is a method of transport in which trains convey passengers and goods along a twin rail track. Following the work of such English steam engine pioneers as James Watt and Richard Trevithick, George Stephenson built the first public steam railway, from Stockton to Darlington, in 1825. The Liverpool to Manchester railway opened five years later. Eight steam engines were used on this line, including Stephenson's Rocket. The other seven engines were built to the same design.
