Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847, and in 1870 he emigrated with his family to Canada. He became a professor at Boston University where he studied the science of speech. He experimented with sound waves and the vibrations caused by them to see how sound could be transmitted across long distances. Bell devised an electrical transmitter with a vibrating disc that acted in a similar way to an ear. This led to the invention of the telephone.
