Becquerel is remembered as the discoverer of radioactivity in 1896. He went on to study the way in which radiation behaves and, in 1903, he shared the Nobel Prize with Pierre and Marie Curie. His early training was in science and engineering and he spent some years investigating aspects of optics (mirrors and lenses) before becoming Chief Engineer in the Department of Bridges and Highways.
