GEDMERGE will read the contents of two separate GEDCOM files, and
merge them together to become one new GEDCOM file. It was written
by EFT user Ian Harry as a utility for users of Everyone's Family
Tree. GEDMERGE is independent of EFT. GEDCOM files created from
other genealogical software should work as well, but the program
was tested using only GEDCOM files generated from EFT.
Assume you have a GEDCOM file called SMITH.GED and would like to
combine it with another file called JONES.GED. One of these files
will be input file 1, the other input file 2. Neither file will
be changed by GEDMERGE. Instead a third file will be created,
containing the information merged from the first two files.
This may sound simple, but in fact, is more complicated than it
seems. Every individual in a GEDCOM file has an ID number that
links him or her to spouses, parents, or children. In PAF these ID
numbers are called Record Identification Numbers (RIN). GEDMERGE
renumbers the people (and linked references) for the second file
being merged into the first one. This avoids duplication of RIN
numbers. In the new file all RIN numbers will still be unique.
Be aware that there will be no merging of data within an
individual or family record. If you have the same John Brown in
both GEDCOM files to be merged, you will then have TWO John
Browns in the new merged file, but each with different RIN
numbers. Delete extra people after they are imported into your
genealogical database.
