  21.         Most genealogy programs retain records in the order they are
  22.         entered. Considering the various ways of collecting that data, the
  23.         order is very random. An example is Personal Ancestral File (PAF)
  24.         by The Church of Jesus Christ and Later Day Saints (Mormons).

  26.         In searching for an individual in PAF, you will find the
  27.         individuals in the order entered. Any printout of individual
  28.         numbers and names will be also very randomized. If your personal
  29.         preference is to look through an organized database, then GEDSORT
  30.         may be just the program you have been searching for!

  32.         To use GEDSORT, you must first export your database from your
  33.         genealogy program into a GEDCOM file format. Most better programs
  34.         include that capability to allow transfer of data between
  35.         researchers without requiring retyping. If your database cannot be
  36.         exported and imported to/from GEDCOM format, then GEDSORT will not
  37.         be of interest to you.

  39.         After sorting your GEDCOM file, then import the sorted file into
  40.         a new/clean database in your genealogy program of choice.

  42.         Another area in which GEDSORT is useful is in sorting the output
  43.         files created by the International Genealogical Index (IGI), the
  44.         Ancestral File (AF), and the Social Security Death Index (SSDI),
  45.         all available from the Mormon Family History Library and Centers.
  46.         GEDSORT allows you to organize the file BEFORE placing the
  47.         information into your database.
