3. Protestant churches arise in Europe
A movement to
reform the Roman Catholic Church has led to the rise of new churches
in many parts of Europe. Early in the 1500's, many Roman Catholics
withdrew from the church because it failed to address profound disagreements
about religious beliefs and criticisms of church practices outlined
by reform leader Martin Luther. Followers of Luther's ideas, known
as Protestants, have established Protestant churches throughout
northern Europe.
