1. Seljuk armies take over parts of Asia, Byzantine lands

Seljuk victories in the 1000's allowed this central Asian Muslim group to gain control of many areas in Asia, including Persia, Syria, Palestine, and parts of Anatolia that had been controlled by the Byzantine Empire. This empire, among the most ancient in the world, has its capital in Constantinople.
