GRANTSMART INTEGRATES 
FINE READER ENGINE IN ITS SEARCHABLE DATABASE OF TAX FORMS

GrantSmart uses ABBYY FineReader 4.0 Engine to create a searchable Database of tax forms for over 60,000 private foundations. FineReader OCR functions are integrated into a custom application to extract text information from each tax form image file received from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Tag Image File Format (TIFF). Once the tax forms are in text format, GrantSmart indexes the data and puts it into a complete searchable Database that provides users with quick access to useful information.

GrantSmart: 
GrantSmart is an informational and interactive resource center for and about the nonprofit community. It has gathered data about foundation activities that may be of interest to grantseekers, philanthropic organizations, and individual donors. The information helps to encourage informed decision-making and diversification in funding. In order to make the data widely available, GrantSmart places at their website a searchable Database of tax-related information for each of the over 60,000 private foundations that file Form 990-PF with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Database includes images of the most recently filed IRS Form 990-PFs and information from key fields within each of these tax returns.
