C TECHNOLOGIES USES ABBYY PRODUCTS IN ITS C-PEN READING PEN

C-Pen is a reading pen able to scan up to 2000 text pages and save them as image files either in the pen itself or send them via an infrared port into computer. The built-in digital camera photoes the needed areas of the text and then OCR system makes a text file out of this picture. Moreover, the reading pen may be used as a portable dictionary thanks to the built-in dictionary. Users may find different dictionaries for C-Pen, in fact a whole list of them, at the C Technologies website. The heart of C-Pen is the Intel StrongArm 100 MHz processor, the pen weighs only 100g.

C Technologies, the developer of C-Pen, wasnÆt satisfied with the current OCR-system in the C-Pen. The software took too much space, which prevented development of the applications in the reading pen. ABBYY Software House was contacted and about a year ago C Technologies announced the start of the process of integrating FineReader into C-Pen. Besides, a few months ago a process of integration ABBYY Lingvo English-Russian-English dictionary into C-Pen began.

Now, the integration of both products is over. The main feature of the integration of ABBYY products into the C-Pen reading pen was that the C-Pen, as any portable device, has very strict requirements as to the size of the software to be used in it.
The maximum space for the OCR system was 2 Mb, while the standard version of ABBYY FineReader occupies ten times as much, and the maximum dictionary size was 4 Mb. The main task the developers faced was to ôshrinkö the software without reducing its famous quality. We are proud to say that the task was solved successfully: the C-Pen recognizes texts in 53 languages and boasts the ABBYY Lingvo Universal dictionary with its 62000 entries in English-Russian part and more than 50000 in the Russian-English part.
