ABBYY FINE READER EMBEDDED ENGINE PERFORMS OCR
IN COMPACT DEVICE WITH NON-PC OPERATING SYSTEM

ABBYY OCR Technology Runs In ôReader Penö From C-Technologies

New York, NY (May 1, 2001) - ABBYY, a leader in OCR and linguistic technologies, and C Technologies, a well-established IT-company with cutting-edge expertise in the field of digital camera technology, today announced an OCR-enabled reader pen that demonstrates the effectiveness of ABBYY OCR technology running in very small portable electronic devices. The C-Pen reader pen is the first commercial product to result from ABBYYÆs development of an OCR technology that can be tightly integrated with hardware peripherals in a non-PC environment.

This accomplishment opens new opportunities for ABBYY to embed its award-winning FineReader recognition technology into compact, portable, specialized equipment such as pocket interpreters, industry robots and palm computers. A major hurdle in developing the C Pen was the limitations of the penÆs small OCR system (only 2 MB), which is only one tenth of the standard version of FineReader. Yet, the ABBYY FineReader Embedded OCR Engine, running in the reader pen, is capable of processing a full line of text in less than one second and recognizing text in 53 languages.

Weighing less than 100 grams (3.53 ounces), the C Pen can scan up to 3,000 pages of text, which can be stored in separate files within the reader pen and transmitted by means of a built-in infrared interface to a PC. It works like a highlighter pen that captures information in digital form. As the user moves it over the text, the built-in digital camera takes pictures and then converts the image into computer readable text via the ABBYY FineReader Embedded Engine. The C-Pen is powered by the Intel StrongArm processor with a clock speed of 100 MHz.

One Year In Development

ABBYY and C Technologies AB started the process of integrating ABBYY FineReader into C-Pen a year ago. The integration process is now completed. The problems associated with making FineReader smaller have now been solved without a noticeable reduction in reading accuracy.

ôWe are delighted by our current partnership with ABBYY, who we think has the worldÆs best character recognition software. ABBYYÆs mission is very much in line with C TechnologiesÆ desire to be the best when it comes to image processingö says Mats Lindoff, President and CEO of C Technologies AB.

ôC Technologies is a creative, dynamic company that shares our vision of the future of intelligent peripherals,ö says Sergey Andreyev, CEO of ABBYY Software House. ôThe C Pen is an excellent example of how natural language processing can be embedded into useful, practical portable devices. We believe that embedding OCR into applications like the reader pen marks the beginning of a revolution in the application of recognition technologies.ö

ABBYY FineReader Embedded Engine running on the C Pen will be demonstrated at the Association for Imaging and Information ManagementÆs Exposition and Conference (AIIM 2001), May 1 to May 3, at the Javits Center in New York.
