Executive director ABBYY Sergey
Andreyev, president ABBYY David Yang, and Business Development Director PRIMAX Int.
B.V. Fred Wieringa
PRIMAX International B.V. (the Netherlands)
and ABBYY (Russia) declare about the launch of the joint software ù character
recognition system PrimaPage and about signing the contract to bundle this system with all
Primax scanners all over the world.
Among the wide spectrum of Primax (http://www.primax.nl) products ù mice, joysticks,
electronic connection devices, projectors, paper shredders, etc. ù the scanner revenue
is 32%. Up to the present Primax scanners were delivered with OCR ReadIris all over the
world, and with the OCR FineReader 3.0 Standard ù in Russia. To improve the quality of scanners, in the end of 1997
Primax decided to develop its own OCR instead of using ReadIris. This is PrimaPage.
After detailed studying of the problem Primax
found the most effective solution to develop oneÆs own product: to license an external
OCR Engine, and for this reason FineReader from ABBYY (http://www.abbyy.ru)
was chosen. Up to the present moment (beginning of 1998) FineReader 4.0 was being tested,
and Primax could view and test its features and working quality. After the testing was
over, there was a contract signed between Primax and ABBYY on licensing OCR Engine
FineReader into PrimaPage program and bundling it with Primax scanners.
The development of the program took about half
a year. The PrimaPageÆs program shell is totally developed by Primax International B.V.,
and the program core ù by ABBYY. The system can recognize 39 languages (not including
Russian) and is Twain-compatible.
Starting from August, 1998 (the launching date
of PrimaPage) the Primax company will offer to all distributes (except Russian) Primax
scanners bundled with PrimaPage. As far as Russia is concerned, Primax will be still sold
with FineReader Standard, that can recognize Russian.
David Yang, the resident of ABBYY: "We continue working at Western markets.
And we consider the signing of the contract with Primax a strategically important step,
which will allow us to spread FineReader 4.0 technologies all over the wolrd."
