ííííNagchu is situated in the north of Tibet borders on the Xinjiang Autonomous Region and Qinghai province to the north, Chamdu to the east, Lhasa, Nyingchi, Shanan to the south and Nagri to the west. There are 10 counties and a administrative district in this prefecture with the population of thirty-three million, among which Tibetan occupies 98.98%, Han is over 3,000 and the rest are of other ethnics. Nagchu means í░the black riverí▒ located in the arms of Tanggu la, Nianqing Tangla and Gangdisi mount range. It looks like a treasure land guarded by the two grandeur lions, the Dargo the Buchi snow covered mountains on the west and east. It is also named Chantang covering the area of forty thousand square km with the altitude of 4,500 meters averagely. The landform in its middle west part is mostly smooth with hills and countless lakes and rivers. In the east part, are mainly the valleys and mountains and served as the only farms of this region, and there is a few forest and bushes. The climate is better than the middle west part with the elevation of 3,500-4,500 metyers. It is the semi-cold zone, lacking of oxygen, dry and windy with the temperature of 0.9oC-3.3oC averagely. The humidity is about 48-51% with the rainfall of 380mm a year, and sunshine time reaches 2,852-2,881 hours. The dried windy comes in every November to next march and the whether is worse than the other time, it is cold, dry, lack of oxygen and windy. The best season is from May to September, warm, grass becomes green, and the rainfall occupies 80% of a year. Nnagchu town is the administrative office and the center of the prefecture situating on the way of Qinghai-Tibet high-way, it is also an open area to tourists. There held a horse-racing festival in every August (July in Tibetan calendar), at that time, most of local people, business men and tourists from all directions gathering here. you can appreciate the beautiful natural scenic of the pastureland, atmosphere of the festival and customs of the local people and visit the famous monastery, Shorden. You will impressive by the boundless expanse of the pastureland, the secret area without living people but only wild animals like wild yak, donkey. Namtso lake located between Lhasa and Nagchu is also amazing place with a lot of pilgrims coming to pay pilgrimages here every year.
