SHANNAN

ííííShnnan is the prefecture situated in the southern part of the Nianqing Tanla and Gangdisi mount range covers the area of over eighty thousand square km. It is divided with Bhutan and India with the Himalaya mount range in its south east. Lhasa is located to the north, Shigatse is to the west and Nyinchi is to the east.
It is the typical flatlands in the valley of the plateau with the altitude here is 3,600 meter averagely. It is rich in rainfall and not as cold as the western and northern part of Tibet. There are many valleys and branches of the Yaluzangpo River big or small distributed in the areas. On the two sides of the Yanlung Valley are the pasturelands on hills, forestry is on the halfway of the mountains and farms are in the valleys. Barley, buckwheat and wheat are good to be growing here. It was named í░the granary of Tibetí▒ and the inhabit region of Tibetans.
Zedang is the center of this area with the population of twenty-nine thousand of Tibetan, Han, Hui, Mengba, LoBa etc, and Tibetans are occupied 98%.
Shannan is the richest area in its economic development and with the longest history in Tibet. It is also called the birthplace of Tibetan civilization for the ancient Tubo Dynasty was found here. The Yalun River scenic spot is of state degree, in this area you can find the tombs of the ancient Tubo Kings, the first monastery in Tibet, Samye, Yumbu lakang, the first Tibetan Palace, chamdru monastery.
