Gorrión azul de pico grande y barras castañas en las alas. Las hembras, de plumaje marrón, también presentan estas barras. Tamaño: 15-16 cm.; peso: 26-31 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en el sur de los Estados Unidos y América Central, invernando en América Central. Visitante invernal raro en las áreas costeras de Puerto Rico.

TAXONOMÍA: PASSERIFORMES; CARDINALIDAE. Antiguamente en el gΘnero Guairaca.
