A large-billed, blue finch with rusty wing bars. The brown female also has rusty wing bars. Length: 15-16 cm.; weight: 26-31 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in the southern USA and Central America. Winters in Central America. Rare winter visitor to coastal Puerto Rico.

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; CARDINALIDAE. Formerly in the genus Guairaca.
